Exhibit A to refute my thesis that the music in brand-name live events never, ever, EVER matches the polish and purity of the studio album. Springsteen throws that notion out the window. How I love this album. How I love this over-sized piece of American poetry, music, and history.

What makes the E Street Band awesome is that it's Bruce's songs, but he himself is not the best musician in the band by far. He surrounded himself with musicians much better than he is in order to flesh out his vision. Kitty's Back is a perfect example. The E Street Band are largely jazz and soul cats, and all great improvisers, playing rock n' roll. Having New York on one side and Philly on the other will do that to you if you play an instrument.

Good jammin n jazzin. Who's the incredible organic orgasmic organ-donor organist? Bass player looks like McGuinn. Maybe Bruce oughta try How High The Moon. Or Fly Me To The Moon (slow, would need a big Weinberg snarebeat). I dareya, Bruce: do some jazz. Hey, how bout Take 5. Cherokee-make up words for them? Patti Scialfa has always seemed so... out of place to me on that stage, so... average. Most of the time she strums some easy rhythm guitar, and when the level goes up like in songs like Kitty's back or others, she just does some backing vocals. I love Bruce but this is possibly the most evident form of nepotism ever seen in a major band.
