It's really not even a question that DDP is still the next up for a title shot. If Chimaev wins, he's not beating the #1 ranked guy so idk why he'd be ranked #1 as a contender, same goes for Costa. Realistically that matchup should just be for the right to fight someone else for a contenders match.
Chimaev 'll get it if DDP isn't ready. But i think Izzy & DDP 'll be ready to go before the 3 or 4 months that the winner of Costa v Chimaev will need after their fight in October. Izzy v DDP could be in December or the 1st quarter of 2024.
Costa isn't getting sh*t. He fought only 4 times in 4 years, one of those times he came in at 205lb, the other time he had wine the night before the fight & the last one was a Luke Rockhold who is long in the tooth but he made it close. He has pulled out of more fights than he has fought in the last year. That's too much drama & risk for the UFC that needs to deliver title fights for PPVs.
I think Costa was being a company man in the Rockhold fight and back way off the gas to let Rockhold retire with some pride
@jeremiahstarcher1918 that fight is unironically one of my favorite fight ever. Luke, totally gassed, screaming fuck you to Costa before rocking him was great, but Costa.wasnt full terminator that night for sure. He let Luke get his wind back multiple times and played grappling when he probs could've muscled out.

Im a super Khamzat fan but there is no denying Costa will be his biggest challenge. Even Romero couldnt keep Costa grounded.

Hmm well I don't know. I would however like to take this opportunity to congratulate unca chael on his fight with fedor, which I only saw last night. Holy jesus I am not a guy to duck a competition, but having the balls to step in a cage with fedor really is what being a tough guy is all about. I have never seen a 230 lb man that could move like a featherweight but still have thunder in both hands and be able toss you across a cage, no matter how good your wrestling is. I can't think of another man that had all these gifts, no jon, not dc, not stipe, nobody. Kudos uncle chael, you are awesome.
If DDP's next fight isn't for a title something is majorly wrong with the UFC. He's hurt and even if he wasn't trying to turn him around in less than 8 weeks against somebody who is potentially the MW GOAT is ridiculous.

I get that no one is talking about it, but the fact the Paul Craig moved down to middleweight is a very interesting topic going into the weekend. He’s submitted top contenders, and he had a very easy move down. Rank 8 light heavyweight, low key calling out Strickland over Izzy. Definitely something to take note of.

I wouldn't have a problem with it but Izzy's opinion is what matters. This is a great match up though. I hate to look past it. All conventional wisdom says Paulo's getting beat here and bad but something weird makes me think he could come out and be a spoiler. I don't see him winning but he could knock another piece of shine off Chimaev. He could make a fight out of it. If Paulo wants to be a spoiler, he needs to get the best BJJ help he can and work on armbars. Heck get Burns in there to help. If Paulo could do what Burns did, and it's a big if, and keep the fight standing by doing things that make Khamzat uncomfortable he could make a real run at this. Sure, he can't have Burns level of BJJ by then but with that comically muscular body and a little work who knows.

If Sean beats Izzy, it should be an instant rematch no? If not, then Costa would make as much sense as anybody, especially coming off a win against the guy everyone touted as the champ-in-waiting. Cannonier feels like he needs one more, and it definitely doesn't help that nobody's really in a hurry to rewatch that one for 25 more minutes.

No instant rematch, this is only one time kind of stuff if the champ got multiple title defenses, since Izzy lost to Alex Pereira he no longer got this privilege...still, there’s no way Strickland makes it.
Izzy lost against Alex so his dominant winning streak ended. So if Sean wins Izzy doesn't get an immediate rematch. Izzy isn't losing to Sean though, he will fight Dricus and get Ko'ed.

I like Paulo and hope that he wins against Khamzat but he lost against Izzy then vettori and has only won against an aged rockhold in his last three fights. A win against chimaev would be the right direction but probably not enough to get him back in there with the man that beat him from pillar to post

Sean fights Izzy. Loser of Khamzat-Costa fights Whittaker. Winner fights Cannonier. Ddp gets the next title shot. Loser of the Cannonier/Khamzat-Costa match gets the loser of the DDP title fight and the winner gets the title shot. That's like 18 months worth of fun fights and mw excitement.

He's a big name, it would be justifiable on those grounds, but it would expose Chimaev's difficulty fighting at 185 more than prove Costa worthy
If Costa puts a halt to the hypetrain, you'd have to lend him that opportunity, but it's a hard sell if Izzy is still champ when we know he got sniped the first time. But I suppose you could also say that about Rob even though he looked much better in the rematch.

I think the winner should fight for the belt. Paulo wants revenge against Izzy, and I think Khamzat gives Izzy problems with his wrestling. Either way, there’s no one else for Izzy to fight, and Strickland hasn’t beaten any big name to claim a title shot. It would be a shame if he fought for the belt in my opinion.

I’d normally agree Duplessis fumbled it. But his fooot was a balloon. Not a sprain, it was right in the center of the foot. You can’t train with that. And I don’t believe Izzy would want him to fight a badly injured Duplessis, AND on only ONE month to prepare. It would look bad on his part if he beat an injured Dricus with only one month training after another fight. It’s good that he’s making fun of him for not being ready, for promotions sake, but dricus deserves next.
