Narrow Gauge Cane Trains around Ingham - 2ft Gauge Wilmar Sugar Railway, North Queensland, Australia

- The small North Queensland town of Ingham, an hour's drive north of Townsville and three hours south of Cairns, is in the heart of sugar cane farming country. An extensive network of narrow gauge railway lines feed two nearby mills, Victoria and Macknade, both operated by Wilmar Sugar Australia. During the crushing season (roughly June to December) the network is incredibly busy, with a variety of 0-6-0 and bo-bo diesel locos hauling incredibly long rakes of four wheeled sugar bins. The length and weigh of some of the trains requires a radio controlled banking loco pushing at the rear of the train! NOTE....I've since been informed that this is not a banking loco but is actually a remote controlled brake unit. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this video. Please leave comments below. La petite ville d'Ingham, dans le nord du Queensland, à une heure de route au nord de Townsville et à trois heures au sud de Cairns, se trouve au cœur de la culture de la canne à sucre. Super interesting footage of the cane train operations there - love the compositions of the train over the lengthy bridge and next to the large tree!!! Great video!
Thanks for pointing out the brake function of the unit at the end of the train - formerly I also took it for a banking loco.
Many years South Africa also had large network 2ft gauge railways in the cane plantations. Unfortunately we lost of of that to lorries on the road doing the work.
Very worried that Australia might go the same way with the lorries. So far it seems limited to hauling three bins at a time from more remote collection lints to railhead marshalling yards. That’s a system they employ in the Pioneer valley. The networks here are indeed fascinating.
In Indonesia, we have the narrow gauge cane train (we call it lori train [not lorry 🚛😂]), but now that train is in bad condition, and replaced by trucks. ☹️☹️☹️
That's so sad the hear Abdul. Were very lucky here in Queensland that the majority of the mills have decided to retain quite extensive rail networks. I've become fascinated by them since moving here. Victoria Mill trains?
The trains are working to and from both mills around Ingham. The one crossing the bridge is coming out of the smaller of the two close to Halifax (the name escapes me at the moment I’m afraid).
