  • Bowen's Reaction Series is one of the amazing concepts a geologists need to understand. This will help you to understand why quartz is resistant to chemical weathering. This is because of high silica content as compared to the minerals at the top portion of the series. This video will also help you to understand the difference between continuous and discontinuous series. Generally these two are differentiated based on their structures. In the discontinuous series the olivine will react with the melt to produce the pyroxene, completely changing its structure. However, in the discontinuous series, the high temperature plagioclase will react with the melt to form the plagioclase, without tempering with its structure. You will also learn the significance of fractional crystallization. This process plays a major role during magmatic evolution.
