STACYC 16eDRIVE | HOW LONG DOES THE BATTERY LAST? (SPOILER ALERT: NOT LONG, BUT FIND OUT WHY)

  • So I think the biggest question about a Stacyc bike is "how long does the battery last?" I can spoil this video and say confidently "not long!", BUT, your results may vary and I explain this as well as the factors that contribute to battery life in this video.
    My 6-year old Rennen is exceptionally hard on his equipment, so he's the kid to test stuff like this and figure out all the weaknesses! Being a PW50 rider first, he's used a heavier gas powered bike that can be refilled when it stops. On the Stacyc, he doesn't understand batteries and why it takes so long for them to recharge, so this is a frustration point for me as a dad that wants to provide my kid with entertainment that lasts more than 20-minutes.
    Along with the poor battery life, the plastic window that covers the status lights also fell off during a fall. This might have been the fault of the crash and a fluke, but when you spend $800, this is a little disheartening. A little super glue solved the issue though. The other issue is the red flashing error code (overheating) that will consistently happen before the battery shows signs of weakening. I think Stacyc isn't telling us that this error is more of less shutting the bike down before running the battery too low, as if there's a "low limit shutoff" when the battery gets to a certain point. This is why I focused on the Razor 4-wheeler for a minute, as that will run the battery down until the wheels won't turn anymore. This is surely due to the higher-tech lithium-ion battery in the Stacyc and a lower tech battery in the Razor that can be run to dead over and over without compromising the integrity of the battery itself.
    Overall the Stacyc is an awesome toy (some might frown on that terminology) that is brilliant by concept, but leaves a little lacking in terms of battery management, both in terms of run time and cost. For a parent that has his kid on a multitude of wheeled "toys", the Stacyc is by far the most fun for my kid, but also the most frustrating due to low battery run-times and mysterious issues.

    Got some legit control of that bike! That’s an absurd price for those battery packs. My Dewalt 20/60v Max packs aren’t even that much. They need to fix that. But, dang, he does rip it up well on that bike!

  • @toolshedjunky
    @toolshedjunky Před 3 lety +2

    With the type of riding your son is doing, you'll need a higher performance battery.
    Something with a lower internal resistance.
    With a lower internal resistance it will give up it's power more freely and not get as hot.
    If Stacyc offers a better battery I would start with that.
    If not, build your own.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah the batteries are lacking bad on these. There’s a Dewalt adapter a guy 3-D prints that I’ve been trying to get, but they’re very limited production. It’s said the Dewalt batteries last longer and run a bit stronger despite being the same voltage and amp hour rating

    The error code you are getting is because the motor is overheating. Your son is a great little rider!!! Keeping the bike pinned and doing burnouts, donuts and wheelies will definitely drain the battery and overheat the motor if you do it excessively.
    These bikes were designed to give kids confidence and build their skills on sometimes that only weighs in at 19lbs. Does the 4wheeler or pw50 build his balance breaking, and throttle control / skills like the STACYC?

  • @brickhouse6533
    @brickhouse6533 Před 2 lety +1

    Lithium batteries are designed to run at 100% till drained dead. It's not as if you are not using it all. The difference is your getting max performance even when the battery is at 5% life remaining unlike non Lithium batteries where once you hit 25% remaining you lose power and continue to lose power till it comes to a crawl and dies. So in actuality you get a longer run on Lithium.

    How are the 16e batteries holding after a few months or years of use? I am thinking about getting one for my kid so I can take him on bike rides with me? But I am afraid that will get him into motocross sports and away from the mountain biking.

  • @JosephRedmond
    @JosephRedmond Před 3 lety

    I think you are complaining to much on the battery. Not much more than drill batteries, but I’m guessing when they mention there is a coating, it is protection for impacts and such so the battery doesn’t explode. I just got one for my boys with a second battery. They love it much more than the power wheels toys

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 2 lety +2

      I'm only complaining because they cost quite a bit to add a second battery, and I wish they'd last longer. Also, because we paid $800 for it, then basically have to pay another $100+ for another battery... It's not like I bought a $100 drill

      @@John5XR The website says: "up to 60 minutes... Run-time is entirely dependent on terrain, hills, and skill level. Run-times are estimates and can vary." My kids batteries have lasted around 60 minutes but, he started riding a stacyc when he was 3 y/o and now he's 4. Your kid is older, more advanced and he's going everywhere wide open so, obviously the battery is going to drain quicker. Don't be so dramatic. You bought this bike for your kid when he was already riding a PW50... maybe do another video on how long a tank of gas lasts him.

    • @John5XR
      @John5XR  Před 2 lety +4

      We bought this for him so he could have fun riding with his little brother on his Stacyc 12 which seems to work fine. While he’s already on a PW (beyond that now even), gas bikes and their weight don’t normally mix safely with a Stacyc 12. The drama is due to the fact that I payed $800 for this and I expected more for that kind of money. I think Stacyc is being a little optimistic with their age and weight range on the 16 and overselling it a bit. It’s ok to be a bit salty when you spend that much and realize you’ll need to spend another $100+ on a second battery because your kid is having so much fun. I think that’s fair

  • @tylerklassen9770
    @tylerklassen9770 Před rokem +1

    It doesn’t really matter the fact that it’s lithium or SLA (Sealed Lead Acid). They just gave different discharge rates. AH = Amp Hours. The battery in the Stacyc is 5ah. So say you’re pulling 20 amps on the motor 5/20 = 15 minutes.
    The battery SLA in that prego is about 10 AH and the motor pulls maybe 10-20 amps depending on the gear reduction is how you get amp draw down and retain power.
    10AH/10 amp draw= 1 hour of riding.
    So comparing them isn’t very useful.
