Mercedes's Pazuzu voice sends shivers down my spine! Especially hearing it alone, stripped of any added "horror" sound and visual effects from the movie. This woman is an absolute legend!
Mercedes McCambridge was originally a radio play actor. Radio actors can do incredible things with their voices. Friedkin says in his autobiography that McCambridge ate raw eggs and started smoking again (after having quit cigarettes for many years) to get the right sound for the demon's voice. He then mixed in other frightening sounds into the track
She honestly deserved an Academy award for this performance. The people we saw on screen we excellent, but she was extraordinary. We might have saw the actors, but it's her voice we heard (and felt) and were terrified.

A remarkable achievement and she should have won the Academy Award for this performance! She went to a very, very dark place to come forth with this.
