Didn't know the island was that big, but it looks small compared to the lake.😀
Lake Superior is the Largest freshwater lake on the planet. it is 350 miles long.. Basically the size of South Carolina.
When you said that you were going to get to see a moose up close then went directly to a clip of a moose's skeleton, I thought you were playing a joke on us. It looked like you were within 20 feet of that guy. How close were you? It was fun to see the rangers wave at you as the boat was leaving. I cannot imagine being isolated in that lighthouse for months at a time.
We guessed about 20 or 25 yards away. I lost some video time because I was trying to get the other camera out.lol I would like to take credit for being waved at but there was a girl who had worked there for the summer and was heading back to college... She cried for a long part of the boat ride back. :) That did seem like a VERY isolated lighthouse and I was surprised in was manned until the late 70's.
Hahahah. Did you get the other camera out? It did seem like the last clips of the Moose were sharper. Poor girl. I cried when I left my job too.......tears of joy! Hahhaha. Can you imagine being in that lighthouse when one of those famous Superior storms blows up in the winter? It does seem like they would have made it unmanned sooner. However, the fact that they put solar on it in '85 might be a testimony as to how important this light is. I don't know that I was even aware of solar power in 1985. Can you imagine what it cost to do it?
yeah the in the woods pics were with my newer camera. Yeah - she was sad I was standing near her and reminded her that great memories are something to relish be sad they are over but determined to make more. :) I was surprised manned until the late 70's. ps. thought I already replied but i bet today it would be super expensive to build it was said to be a difficult build and that was back when they did it the old fashioned way - mostly by hand! lol
I agree, our national parks are one thing our government got right! And Isle Royale seems to have gotten the balance between flora/fauna and its worst enemy- us- just right. I just did a refresher on the history of the NPS and had forgotten how many people over many years contributed to its formation...thanks for spurring my curiosity into a rare spark! Love the tree... Four hundred years...way before WE were US! And "I love meeses to pieces!" That was before your time, but I appreciate being able to use that phrase in a real sentence. And the concept of a lighthouse on a lake is a bit outside my wheelhouse.( Sorry, it slipped out). We have many lakes but not BIG lakes, so I've enJOYed my vicarious tours with you...Thanks again. I considered adding a bunch of quotes from some of the great people through history that were wise and determined enough to do their best to fight the powers that be to leave us these gifts. And we should try to carry on that effort... ok off my soapbox. lol If you have never seen Ken Burns documentary on the National Parks you MUST SEE IT !! He makes the history come alive. I imagined being isolated in that lighthouse for months at a time.. I read something that a coupe times over the history some keepers were dangerously close to running out of food. lol Chins scratched and so glad you enjoy. all the best
I've been up the north shore a zillion times and never made the trip to the island. Thanks for the video! Also, do you have a video on which bike rack you use on the back and why? I just bought a similar RV to yours and need one and would love to watch that video. Thanks.
I think it is worth the trip for sure. :) I believe I have showed the bike rack in a couple videos but can't remember which one(s). lol I'm not sure of the exact model of the rack but it is a Thule and I bought it off a neighbor a few years ago.

what trail were you on for that amazing view of the stream cuttthrough the field and the moose?
I'm "almost" positive it was the trail that went from Windigo to Rainbow cove. Got off the boat at Windigo and asked what was the best trail I had time for and pretty sure that was the ranger suggestion. If the trail itself has a name I apologize I don't remember the name. The rangers are super helpful and will give great advice - especially if only doing a day trip.

I almost always see moose along the Gunflint Trail. It's west of Grand Marais.

Would you have to bring a tent etc.?
Yeah - there are a couple cabins and a lodge on the other side of the island but the vast majority of visiting is back packing and tenting. :)
Is there camping...no cars allowed ?
Yes this is a wilderness park.. all hiking and back packing no vehicles. The other side of the island has a lodge at Rock Harbor... I think there are also small cabins in this area but pretty much this is tent camping.
No cars due to there are no roads or electricity or gas. They do have a pay phone at Rock Harbor and a flushing toilet.
I think I saw Bigfoot!! Oh it was a moose...

NICE !! Maybe one day I will take a canoe or kayak out there - I'm sure that is pretty awesome. :)
