- DREMEL CARVING STONE. I have been following "Carvingandsuch" on CZcams. He is a wood carver using Dremel and Foredom rotary tools. He takes a simple approach to carving that is inspirational to any would-be carver. One of his videos showed how to carve this little Owl. I thought I would give it a go on a stone boulder.
I used an ordinary electric drill and my Parkside Dremel type rotary grinder.
When carving stone using a water supply to cool and lubricate the burrs is essential, it also keeps the dust down, a serious matter when carving stone slate or granite. I have shown how to set up a water feed for carving stone in another video linked below. The Parkside rotary grinder is a safe tool to use with water, although it is mains powered it runs through a transformer and the machine itself is only 12 volt.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well using an ordinary drill with diamond bit worked. It actually made quite a good stone carving machine, at least for roughing out.
Picking up a rough boulder and buying a cheap rotary grinder would be a simple way to try out this absorbing craft hobby. The Parkside cordless rotary tool is a particularly good Dremel type machine for the price and would be ideal for carving beginners.

Glad you like them! and thank you for watching.
REALLY impressive. Couldn't stop watching.
Thank you for such a positive comment, I feel I am still an improving novice, so this kind of encouragement is really very welcome.

Thank you, and thanks for watching.
Awesome Job 💓
Thank you! Cheers!
Love your videos sir always learning
Thanks 👍
The owl went well on that stone. Looked great.
Thank you, I am planning more.
Wow! Thank you so much for the privilege of watching you work - you made it look easy - not like a struggle at all... what a garden treasure :)
You are so welcome!
Thanks superb
Most welcome 😊
Nice work, you make it look easy. Thanks for the making a video of your process.
I struggled with it a bit more than it looks, but that is half the fun! Thanks for watching!
Nice work
A charming creature peeking out of the stone, well done sir.
Thank you kindly
I do some power carving in wood you have great patience to carve that owl in stone great job
Thank you for that, it does take me several hours to do a carving like this. Partly that's my inexperience and partly the hardness of the stone, I have tried a spot of wood carving myself but I am rubbish at it! Good luck with your carving and thank you for watching.
I do a bit wood shaping I'd call it, this is great!
Thank you! Cheers!
great work Sir i must try that myself
Go for it! And please let me know how you get on! Thanks for watching.
Absolutely Enjoyed watching your video.
I want to give it a try too.
I've watched Many of Carving and Such CZcams videos and tried wood carving using power tools and regular hand tools.
Lots of fun.
Stone carving looks like it could be very relaxing and I definitely need an outdoor hobby for the summer months.
Thanks for sharing Your Talent with All of Us!!
Sincerely, J Q
thank you so much for the kind comments, enjoy your stone carving!
Brilliant. And thank you for doing it with affordable tools. I had no idea you didn't need a crazy load of tools and gear to do this.
Hi Sophie, since making this video I always use a water feed to keep the dust down, for your own safety I hope you do the same. Enjoy your carving!
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 that'll be me doing it in the kitchen sink then....
This is beautiful. I haven't been carving long but I love it. It's always nice to see other ideas and techniques. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, are you carving stone? Thank you for watching.
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 I have carved stone but most of my completed work has been wood. I also tried buffing some shells and I have a design drawn up on an eggshell that I am going to be getting to soon.
Thank you Alyssa, it is always interesting to hear what others are doing, I hadn't thought of carving shells, certainly not eggshells? (how the devil do you carve an eggshell?) Enjoy your carving!
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 So I actually saw this video and I was blown away at how beautiful it turned out. czcams.com/video/_XZ-TFuIxDQ/video.html
If you do carve shells just be very slow with it and keep checking to see that you aren't making it too thin. I did that at first and kept kicking myself. It's really fun to see all the colors under the top layer of wear.
Just found time to watch this, it is amazing! This lady has an amazingly steady hand. Thank you for this, I wonder if a rotary grinder would do this?
great video very enjoyable to watch! I'm a stone mason from the lake district have you ever worked with green slate it has some beautiful markings and patterns and small bits you pick up from the ground can make some brilliant jewellery all the way to bigger stuff for carvings, sculpture and headstones ect (green slate from the lake district).
Hi James, greetings to a fellow mason. I have worked some Cumberland slate (grey/green)but only the occasional house sign and it is beautiful. I would have used it more but never found a regular supply. I do have a biggish reclaimed slab of Westmorland green slate, really nice sea green colour but very hard. I will find a use for it one day! Next time I visit the Lake district I will pick some up. Thanks for watching!

LOVE this owl!
Anyway you could explain your setup for water dripping?
Thanks again!
Patricia
Sure thing! Water feeds - czcams.com/video/PF7L0Cg3e0w/video.html AND czcams.com/video/haPaX3ptaiI/video.html
Best of luck with your carving!
Great work ! I’ve tried doing some myself and have found that often even on rocks I know are soft enough to carve my dremel seems to struggle.
I did my first piece and it cut like butter (with the burr attached right into the dremel), but each time I’ve tried since (using a flexshaft) it seems although using the same rock it just won’t cut well... I’m beginning to wonder if the Flexshaft takes away power somehow
Hi Leroy, I assume you are using your dremel as the power source? If that is the case then I would guess the drag on the shaft will reduce the power at the tool end. Think of the friction between the inner wire cable and the outer shaft. Maybe some light oil down the shaft will reduce that effect? I use a ferrex bench grinder driven flex tool and this is definitely more powerful (120w) than my Parkside "dremel" type grinder (without shaft). So I think you may be quite right, and the shaft reduces the power. Anyone out there with a different view please let us know. Interesting..... Also water feed makes a huge difference to the cutting ability of the tool. Thanks for the input and good luck with your carving.
Very good workmanship l can't wait to give it a go , where do you get all your drill bits for the dremell (Parkside)
I get almost all my diamond tools from ebay or Amazon. Thank you for watching.
Very nicely done. I’m a woodcarver and have been interested in doing some rock carving. Can you tell what bits you used in your rotary tool? Thanks keep up with the excellent work!
Hi, I just use bits mostly from amazon or ebay. Pretty much any set of diamond bits should do the job. best of luck !
Please could you send a link to the metal bonded stone drill bit you are using in the video
Many thanks
Maria
Would you also consider links to your grinding and detailing tips as I have had limited success finding good ones.
Many thanks
Maria
❤
Is this made also by man.
I hesitate to get into such profound philosophical discussion , cheers!
Beautiful job. What brand of cutting bits are you using? Thanks for the great work!
Hi I bought mine off of ebay, I did make a video here: czcams.com/video/_9OkO3Ov-S4/video.html
Hope this helps and good luck if you are carving stone?
Thanks for the info!
🥰
Thank you!
Thank you so much, it's probably been asked and told lots, but could you please tell me what kind of rock it is you are using? Looks nice and soft for carving!
Hi, this was a sandstone called Yorkstone. Hope that helps!
Hi what size bit did you use in the rotary drill to get the deep outline? I was considering buying a 9” grinder for making planters out of York stone but after seeing this I have a big Bosch rotary drill already and thought this will save me £100. The sintered diamond bits I think you said they were are they like mini core drill bits?
Hi, I used a 10mm solid diamond drill bit, not core. I have looked at larger straight Die Grinders and they are very expensive so as an occasional use thing I think using a drill is a good idea. My concern is that the bearings and gearbox on a drill may not be up to regular use. My guess is that die grinders have stronger bearings etc. You might also consider buying diamond burrs with a 6mm shaft. I have just bought some of these and will be trying them out soon. Cheers
😍❣💯‼️
thank you!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing! Excellent job as well. You make it look to easy. I’m gonna check and see if you have other videos. If you do I am going to subscribe. Thanks again friend!!..
Hi Rob, you are very welcome, thanks for watching.
Awesome stuff. How many 'bits' did you go through to make this tho? I'm looking at doing something but not sure if it'll cost me loads to keep renewing the bits 🤷🏼♂️
Hi Gethin, if you are working wet, your diamond tool wastage will be very little. With a good water supply to the bits you will be using the same bits time and time again. I still have many of my original burrs, If you work dry you will burn through them. ( wear a very good mask) Best of luck with your carving!
@@thestonecraftingworkshop7490 brilliant, thanks 😊
Could You recommend me a brand of polishing tips?. How many RPM do you use them at?. Thank you.
Hi, I dont use any particular brands, I assume you mean the diamond burrs? I just buy them from ebay or amazon. Sorry i cant be more helpful.
Hi is this a cordless drill you're using. I'm concerned about using water near corded rotary drill
Hi Cath, I did use a mains drill for the roughing out but used it dry. The dremel type tool is mains powered but through a 12volt transformer so very safe in the wet. However it is always worth considering the safety side of things so well done!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Thanks again!
Is it absolutely necessary to have water running onto the stone?
You could do this dry but you would need a very good mask and preferably dust extraction. Dust can be dangerous! Take care.
What machine do you use for the water?
Hi Phillip, I have two ways: czcams.com/video/PF7L0Cg3e0w/video.html
and here: czcams.com/video/haPaX3ptaiI/video.html
I hope this is what you are asking? best of luck!
Great work I hope one day I'll be that good. But aren't you using the wrong type grinder. Electricity and water don't mix well.
Hi, the rotary tool is only 12 volt thru a transformer, nowadays I usually use a flex drive keeping the power source away from the water. thank you for watching.
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
