five of us climbed the Abol trail this past July 2021. Holy moly ! It was very difficult. The mountain doesn't stop ! But it was worth it. We signed in and left the Ranger Station at the Abol Trail head at 7:30 am, and returned to the Ranger Station to sign out at 5PM. Then we proceeded back to our campsite at the Penobscot Outdoor Center for a hot shower and proceeded further the River Driver's Restaurant for a great meal. Mt. Katahdin is no Joke! Amazing scenery and views in a pristine wilderness ! Also, we just waived at the "Knife Edge" and headed back down the Mountain. Lol.

And here is the main thing to consider start the hike no later than 5:00 am so you don’t get stuck on the Abol boulders in the dark and have to spend the night in a crevasse like me and my grandson had to do August 15

From Aug 1958 to Aug 1960 i was stationed with the USAF at Otis AFB Cape Cod Mass. It was an Air Rescue Squadron and we had about 20-25 Paramedics who would go to Katahdin once in a while to do some climbing, just to keep in shape. Great bunch of guys and they loved climbing there.

I seriously considered just throwing myself off the summit, rather than hike back down. 13 hrs..Id do it again, but would 1. break my boots in, 2 bring a walking pole, 3 air boots out at top, 4 bring 2x the food and water, 5 take less junk in my backpack. 6 maybe exercise A LOT before going back, I was 30 years old and Katahdin whooped my ass.

I think anyone who is both older AND not in great shape should make a serious effort to get in better shape before attempting any of the trails. I made a point of hiking shorter hikes two or three times a week all summer before I tried it, and felt like I was barely going to make it down at dusk!
