  • In this fascinating talk, Karl uncovers the theory of code-switching, a powerful tool for social and cultural mobility. Karl Lokko is a former gang leader turned activist, poet, influencer, public speaker and adventurer. Having grown up on a gang-ridden estate in South London, and witnessed the murder of his close friends, a church outreach group helped hum turn his back on street violence. Since then he he has managed to harness his life experiences which has propelled and uniquely situated him as an activist/influencer within the U.K and globally and among other things, advisor to Prince Harry. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Good talk.
I think it’s called “adaptation”. Being appropriate, respectful.
The way I talk to friends is not how I speak in a boardroom.
People who think that they can be the same in any circumstance won’t get far.

Code switching too much makes me forget who I am at times..
    That’s when new codes emerge.

Surrounded by predators, in the forest, if you reveal your position - you'll be eaten
Since revealing the security of the community code, the community is at greater risk And the community enemy is using the code in their comms to create more confusion in the community of origin
