    I’m absolutely sure my opinion has no relevance in your life, but I just wanted to comment to say how much I think you and Zoe have got vlogging with a child spot on! The way you respect her privacy whilst she’s so little but still manage to share her on your platform is lovely to watch. She’s a very lucky girl to have parents like you two. Happy 2023!

    My biggest reading tip when I have a whole stack of books is ... don't judge yourself for what you "should" read first or prioritize. Sit down, and read the one that feels right in the moment. You'll be more curious and focused while absorbing and enjoying it. There is no number of books you "should" read at once, and no end date to finish each. Read one, or ten, or fifty at a time. Go with your gut and enjoy the one you feel like reading that day! You also don't need to finish a book to have gotten something out of it. That was a hard one for me to learn, but sometimes the gem is hidden in chapter six and then you're done with that book. It's okay to let reading flow with your curiosity. Hope that helps!

      Thissssssss. It took me ages to be okay with stopping a book when I was not enjoying it anymore. But the whole joy of reading for me is that I get to control how I read. I skip chapters that I find boring or flip around until I find a section that seems interesting. Agree whole heartedly with this advice 💛

    Reading more than one book at a time is definitely a common thing! I feel as though if it’s not bothering you too much, maybe just start annotating or keeping track of quotes/motifs throughout each book just so you can keep track of what’s significant from each one! Unfortunately, other than that, it’s just a whooooole lot of willpower not to pick up another simultaneously 😂😂

My word for this year is "success" and I know it was the last video that had asked but I am usually a silent watcher lol so this is one of the very few times I have commented. Since I stared watching your and Zoe's videos 10 years ago I have wanted to start my own CZcams channel and last year I finally did it and have been uploading content, this year my goal is to put more effort into making content for all the platforms and hopefully reach success with it. I want to better my videography skills and just my confidence with my content and create the type of videos I've always wanted to make, and you truly make be believe its possible.

    Love the idea of the 2 minute rule. Definitely going to try and start implementing that into my life! In terms of the reading, I am sure people may have already suggested this in the comments, but I would choose one book and then put the other two somewhere where they are not visible every day. Either in your bedside table, on a shelf that isn't at eye-level, etc. That way your focus is only on the one that you are reading and you are not tempted to continue the other ones. But, honestly, if you are able to read more than one book at once, that is incredible so do that too!!!

    With reading I find it helpful to have 3 different genres on the go. For an example, I might have a poetry book, fantasy book and then a non-fiction book. I'm one of those 'silent viewers' but I'm so passionate about reading that I couldn't pass by without sharing my method haha. I find that sometimes it can be easier to finish the book in one day, just set some time for yourself and power through to then start the next one. But this is only because I struggle to read more than one at once. The biggest advice I have is that it's okay to not finish a book. Not every book will be for you, and it's definitely more rewarding to spend your time on a book you like rather than finishing one for the sake of finishing one. Love your videos :)

    I’m still quite a new reader, during lockdown I started my reading journey and am now absolutely in love with reading and it’s a time when I feel like I can actually breathe. A tip for not reading multiple books at a time would be to maybe try and set a deadline for a book: the book you’re either most enjoying, or read the most say ‘I’m going to finish it by x’ and then I’m going to read ‘book y’. For me if I know that once I’ve finished this book, another book that I’m really looking forward to reading is next I tend to finish the first quicker. I’m currently reading a series, and I have so many random standalone books that i am dying to read but telling myself that once I’ve finished my series I’ll read a few of them makes me excited to 1) finish the book I’m already reading and 2) I don’t feel the need to pick up the 2nd book because I know it’s next. I don’t know if this will help in the slightest, it’s more of a mental game than anything, love your videos ❤

Thank you for this video! Love you so much guys

    On your book dilemma - go ahead and start it. I definitely feel you. As a journalist and editor, I read for a living, and what helps me continue to read lots of books for enjoyment outside of work is compartmentalising my reads. I read three books at once, and each book has its time or space. I read one only in the morning, one only before bed, and one on my route to work, or sometimes an audiobook at the gym. If you dedicate a space/time to each book, it helps. If you have commitment issues with your books, then I don’t suggest this 😅 but reading with someone and keeping each other filled in and accountable could be helpful to making sure that you finish one book quickly, or even tracking and logging your pages every day can help you read a little faster so you can be competitive with yourself, and be excited to finish one book and quickly jump into the next. Hope this helps!

  • @bookishvalkyrie
    @bookishvalkyrie Před rokem +1

    I definitely can’t help with the “not starting a new book” because I’m reading 3-4 at any given moment. The way I separate it, is I have books I read at different times. I have a morning book that I start the day with, one I read while I’m eating lunch, or have a bit of time during the day. I usually have an audiobook going while I’m driving, or if I’m working on stuff for my shop. And then I have a book for the evenings to wind down with! I know I’ll never be a one-book-at-a-time girl, so I just have my books for different times/situations.

    reading multiple books at once is a lot easier if you have some way to track your reading! you can use storygraph or goodreads to track, and also organize your books. i really recommend assigning days to each book, like monday you read book 1 and tuesday you read book 2, etc and so on !

    I prefer just having one book on the go at a time, but lots of people like to have multiple books on the go at once! If you can keep track of all of them then it is absolutely fine to read multiple and it can help keep you out of a reading slump since whenever you sit down to read you can pick up the one you actually feel like reading at that point instead of forcing yourself to continue another book that you're not interested in at the time

    Hi! I am a big reader myself and I used to get so frustrated at myself for starting new books whilst still reading another. But last year I learned that that just means I'm a "mood reader", I think it speaks for it self but also google will explain it better than I can🙃. I have now really embraced the term and actually read more since I've learned it because I don't stop myself from picking up a book. I'm currently halfway through 5 books 🤷🏼‍♀️

  • @mayabaker6020
    @mayabaker6020 Před rokem +1

    About the book thing - for me, genre is a factor that affects how many books I read at once! I read quite a lot of fiction and non fiction, so I personally try and have 1 of each on the go at a time. I also find it easier to read multiple non-fiction books, whilst I get confused unless I only read 1 novel at a time… but each to their own! Another tip (just to read more) is using Goodreads or The StoryGraph - they allow u to track your books (and pages) and they really motivate me to finish books as it is like ticking something off a checklist, and is quite satisfying haha. After getting the Story Graph I went from reading about 5 books a year, to reading 65 books in 2022.

  • @faithbarre
    @faithbarre Před rokem

    For me, I set myself a goal each year to read a certain number of books to generally encourage reading, so for example this year I'm doing 23 books in 2023. I find that doing this helps me to focus on one book at a time and read them more often if I feel as though I am working toward my overall reading goal and makes me excited to start the next. I'm usually a one-book-at-a-time kind of person, but I also don't think it's bad to read multiple at one time if that's just how you operate! If I do want to start a new book while I have another going, I take a minute to write a quick summary of what I've read in the previous book so that I can have a quick refresh when I want to pick the original book back up again. Hope this helps!

    It's so common for readers to read a couple of books at once, I think thats also quite needed if one book is a bit on the sad/heavy side and sometimes you dont feel like reading that type of thing and want to read something more uplifting or easy to follow, etc. I usually try to read max 3 books, I have one or two audiobooks and 1 physical book to read until my eyes start hurting :D I think I'm good at remembering the storyline and developement of up to 3 books, if I try to start more books my brain has a bigger chance of exploding :D

    Pausing the video to respond. What I generally do is keep different books for different times of day / different occasions, that way you're giving each book equal importance and still have a variety of reading happening for your 6 month reading high. Your pace might be slower because obviously because you're reading 3 at once but at least your duration of the high will last longer than reading 1-2 books and giving up on the third one because you lost your reading mojo. Some examples that I use - an easy read for my morning reading, a slightly harder book for during the day / picnics / on the way etc. A light fictional reading instead of a tv show before bed. It feels like the perfect book-dessert that I'm treating myself to at night. Hope this helps. x

    I love that 2 minute rule. Another one I heard recently that has stuck with me is - "If something is worth doing then it is worth half a*rsing" meaning that if you want to achieve or do something but don't have the energy to be able to fully commit to it, but you can do something towards that goal, then it's better to do that little thing you can now rather than nothing at all. Changed my perspective on so many things!

    Your reading problem is so relatable. I am always reading at least two/three books at the same. However, most of the time they are of different genres. I do this because some nights I feel like reading one genre and other nights I feel like reading another. I don't have any advice but I recommend having different genres at the same time instead of two books of the same genre. I simply just get bored if I continue reading one genre especially because I am a slow reader so I take at least two/three weeks to finish a book. I read one book for a couple nights then i switch.

    Book tip: I think there is nothing wrong with reading multiple books at the same time. Think about the way that you can also follow two/three different tv series as well. And it can depend on your daily mood/mental state etc. which one you want to put on to watch :) I find this very accurate with books. If I had a very hectic day I would more like to open a book with a storyline, and not a one where I have to put a lot of effort mentally/ reflecting on my life (phsichology books).

    My biggest tip for reading is just to train your brain to see a new book as a reward after you finish the one you’re reading.
    I do usually have 2 books I go to and from with depending on how I’m feeling and what I want to read for the day. But because if my OCD I can’t have more than that even though I really want to start another.

    Alfie, as someone who likes reading and has ups and downs off reading little then lots. Try to read a couple of pages a day. To not read a new book think about how u want to finish it or read a fiction and non-fiction. Alternating every time you read . I got loads of books so do this now xxx
    P.s love the vlog and you, Zoe and Ottie are such a cute little family xx

    For a book recommendation I loved reading the "Gutter Child" by Jael Richardson! It has a really important meaning. I find I get consumed by one book and can't move on until I finish what I'm reading, but if you find that you like reading more than one, then go for it! That's a skill I wish I had haha

    I have in my bullet journal- a layout for reading. I use it to track all the books in my to be read and how far I am. I try not to be reading more than three books at a time and I try to make sure they’re from different categories. For example. I’m reading one book of fiction, one classics and one for professional development rn.

    I read a lot and I would say it is perfectly fine to read more than one book at a time! That way you can rest from a specific book when you don’t feel like reading about that topic. I ALWAYS read more than one book at once! :)

    Hey, I also love reading multiple books at the same time, but I love keeping them in different rooms. One book in the living room, one in the bedroom, etc. That way I kind of "sort" them in my head haha
    Maybe this will help! :) Thanks for the video, as always it makes the perfect end to the weekend!

    Hiya Alfie, normally a silent viewer but I've been thinking of my word for this year since watching your last video and I have come to the decision that mine is growth. Not physically - I'm quite short and have stopped growing in that sense! But in the sense of continuing to be curious, try new things and grow as an individual. Been watching your videos for absolute years (since 2014/15) and have always enjoyed the content you make. All the best to you and your family! XX

    For reading: I read for ~30mins every night before bed. I never read more than maybe two books at a time. It usually one at once and the motivation to finish a book that you’re not loving is having a great one to read after!

    My fear when starting multiple books is that I won't finish any of them. If it's a book that I know will take me time to read, I'm going to audiobook it. If I have two books at once going, one is physical, and one will be audio.
    Also, highly suggest everyone read Atomic Habits! Not sure if that's what you are referring to with the two minute rule because I can't remember if he covers it, but so good!

  • @gracevrogerson
    @gracevrogerson Před rokem

    I'd honestly say that you should start the new book if you're excited! Ride the flow of being excited about a book! And then you can flick between them when that enthusiasm ebbs and flows. If you have a tonnnneeeee of books on the go and genuinely can't start another one, tell yourself that you can start a new book as a reward from finishing the other one!

    Reading is one of my biggest hobbies. I read every single day about 70 to 90 pages. I am a Virgo as well, but I do read one book at a time. I read a book in about 3 to 5 days. My brain just can't handle more than one book at the time.

  • @shanatakoor7986

    It's very common to read several books at the same time, it's really up to you whether you want to "multi-read" or stick to one at a time. The general idea is to avoid reading more than 3 at the same time, but hey ho who cares if you do xD
    If it does not impede on your reading habits or doesn't make you forget or neglect one story (because the downside that many see is starting one story, and forgetting about it because another one has caught your attention, and therefore having multiple half-finished books), then go for it! I used to read 3 books simultaneously back in school, wish I was reading more leisurely now (but sadly, legal materials keep my attention away...) 🙂

    I usually set myself a reading goal for the year, for 2023 it’s 20 books, and that motivates me to finish books so I can tick them off towards my goal 😂 but also, I don’t pressure myself to finish books I’m not enjoying. Life’s too short to read books you aren’t vibing with!

  • @HollyB-1280
    @HollyB-1280 Před rokem +1

    Use Goodreads! You can track your progress with your books and see what percentage of the way you are through it. You can also set a goal for reading for the year. Given how you like to set goals etc it might help you knowing how much you have got left of a book and also having a goal to aim towards as you'd need to finish a book for your reading goal to go up. You could also share your user and add folks from the community, maybe having us lot see how much of a book you've read/share recs/encourage each other might help.

    Book advice: start your new books. Get excited. Books can be like TV shows -- different books for different times. Then whenever you feel like reading, ask yourself: which book do I want to read the most. Finish books whenever you want to- flow in your own schedule.

  • @emilybayliss3853
    @emilybayliss3853 Před rokem

    there's no problem with starting a new book. I remember confusing the heck out of the kids at school by telling them that I had ten books on the go at that time. If you're losing interest in your current book or you spend the time reading one book thinking about what might be happening in another; there's no harm in switching. It's much better to chop and change in a way that suits you instead of stubbornly sticking to the one you're on if you're not enjoying the action. Reading should be enjoyable so do it a way that works for you. If that means taking a break from story and filling your time with another, that's OK. If you need a little refresher when you go back to the previous book, that's OK too. Read how you want to read.

    It is common to start reading another book. For sure, I get that all the time. I’m currently reading 4 books digitally . And I want to start another book. For myself, I just read 10min of the current book I’m reading no matter what to avoid the need to read different book. Or what I’ll do is rotate between the 4 books I’m reading and after I finish reading 2 books then I’ll start another ONE new book for those 2 books I finished.
