Mad scientist's homestead is parking size, off-grid system

- Former Army tech Larry Johnson has spent his career improving computer and telephone systems so when he saw inefficiencies in how we grow our food, he decided to create a new system for farming your yard. His EZGro garden uses aquaponics, stacked towers, and custom pots to create a high-density vertical garden (HDVG) on as little land as a deck, rooftop, or parking space.
Johnson says the system will grow 700 plants, using 15 towers, in a space of just 2 by 18 feet. Today, he sells kits ranging from single tower patio gardens to 10-tower deck gardens to commercial-sized set-ups like those being used by a Miami football stadium for concession meals, by a Whole Foods Market in New Jersey, and by rooftop farmers in Lagos, Nigeria.
It all began in 1995 when Johnson began tinkering with his quad pot design, crafting a custom container strong enough to hold tomato plants with over 100 pounds of fruit. He then developed an irrigation system that feeds nutrient-rich water from the top of the towers, drips through the pots, and filters out through tubing below to be reused. This closed-loop system uses less than 10% of the water of a traditional garden.
To create a system robust enough for even off-grid farmers, Johnson has spent the last 2 decades developing his trihelix solar windmill. Solar panels are mounted on top of three turbines, known as the "Tri-Helix", which are twisted like DNA strands to catch even inconsistent wind (turbines start turning in winds of just 2mph).

If you're interested in these types of vertical-axis windmills, be sure to search a bit for: "Savonius wind turbine". This will show you examples of similar turbine designs, which can you even make as a small science project using e.g. a Pringles tube or a (a bit more "serious") using a small section of rainwater pipe. :)
Note: make sure you stay safe though! When there are high wind speeds. Under high load (and when no braking/safety mechanism is present) parts can go flying when a wind turbine hasn't been designed/constructed properly.
Thanks...
I did your search and it was all very positive... everything I saw was good???? Maybe I misunderstood your words for a warning???
Savonius (vertical axle) windmills are notoriously ineffective compared to the propeller style ones. They were invented a hundred years ago and there is a reason why they are not widely used. It would have been interesting to get proper test results for this design, but any claim that this design is more efficient than what is producing 99.9999% of today's wind energy production should be taken with a very large spoon of salt.
@@tzenophile Depends what you call effective. The propeller ones are installed in a certain position because they know, they studied and have enough data to know where can be efficient. This instead is made to be multi-purpose. By try and error like this fella did, he knows why he choose this instead of the modern one.
@@BurninVinyl I'm sorry, but no, this does not depend on my personal definition of 'effective'. If you want to claim that I'm wrong, please present a single piece of evidence that vertical axis windmills are competitively efficient. They are not. They look cool, which is why people want to believe in them, but they are only used in applications where output is not important, e.g. low-power sensors. If EZGro wants to claim that this is as good as horizontal axis windmills, they have to give us the data. This is pure physics; simple calculations and measurements. Why do you think they don't? It would have been seen as a major breakthrough if they could. But no.

This guy is on another level of off-grid.
He is the grid
Hydroponic fertilizer is from the grid.
I wonder how much he spends on his chemicals every month
@@tzaylor It's easy to figure, A tower can drink up to 1 gal a day. I have 50 towers so that is 50 gal a day in 30 days, that would be 1500 gal a month. It takes 8oz of minerals to make 100 gal of food so we are looking at about 7.5 lbs of minerals. We use a 5 gal pail set (50lbs) every 6 months which cost about $250 so that’s about $42 a month. That is far less the the cost of the food that is produced. We will get about 10 lbs of food per week per tower when in production. We have a small farm stand at the curb and will sell about 400 lbs of tomatoes a week at $2 a pound. We grow other crops as well but tomatoes are in high demand here so we have 40 towers of tomatoes.

That is the most unamerican thing to say ever ...
@@MCRuCr I think it's high time we reevaluate what "American" should be, as an ideology. What it has been up to now leaves a lot to be desired. Sure, as an entity America has accomplished a lot but at what cost? The near-annihilation of the entire population of people who originally lived here? Systemic racism so deeply ingrained in our nation's fabric that even now a tremendous portion of the citizens can't even bear to consider whether it happened? Let alone to do anything about it.
At one time, the most American thing you could do was to commit to being better: better than nations that oppressed their people, better than appeasers who rolled over at the threats of tyrants, better than our own pasts.
We haven't been very committed to that lately, and it shows. We need to fix it. We're better than this.
That was the MOST American thing I could say.

Larry's PCB alternator has fascinated me since I first saw this video. Today I discovered that a company named "Infinitum Electric" has patented this concept, and is actively developing modular, high-efficiency motors using the idea. @@petrapewpew Agreed. But do you think the powers that be want us to be that comfortable?
I grew up in a town where the developer put three fruit trees in every yard. It could be an apple, pear, peach, sour cherry, or sickle pear. After sixty years there aren't many left because people no longer know how to take care of fruit trees. That art has gone away with the future.
@@beebob1279 They absolutely don't want us to be that comfortable but that should not stop us--in fact that's exactly why people should take food security into their own hands at a very local, community level on the down-low. It's much harder to put a stop to a grassroots movement (pardon the pun) that have taken root. Food deserts are a manmade problem that is an afront on every person's right to healthy food. To me, I would say that's reason enough to never stop undermining those powers that be.

In the description you call it aquaponics, but it's a hydroponics set up.
Aquaponics = living fish in the system and their waste water is used to water the plants.
Hydroponics = adding the minerals and trace elements to the water, not using living organisms for it.
@@sirwizalot7164 How would you use beneficial bacteria in a hydroponic/aquaponic system?
I thought he had soil.
Hydroponic and aquaponic systems do not use soil.
Yeah it’s not even hydroponics it’s just a super efficient watering system.
He had a mix of soil and soilless, so fundamentally as per Sahaj's comment, its an automated watering system that gets feed dosed, and some of the plants are hydroponic.
The RO he talks about doesn't even produce the nutrients, its a water filter, I would assume its cleaning either ground / well water or lake / river. Maybe he's concerned about the town water chlorine, seeing as there is almost zero vermiculture, lacto basilicas or mycorrhizal / saprophytic funghi to break it down.
We are working toward this on our farm, but we are in a much colder climate. We are also restoring the endangered oak savanna habitat on our land and that takes time as well - but if everyone does something, the world will be a better place 😊

Wow. The turbines and alternator are mind blowing.
The turbines look like the double helix DNA.
Love the design of the turbines. Looks exactly like the future to me. I think Kirsten just gave us a preview 50 years ahead.
@@shelleynobleart Except that they were invented by Savonius in the 1920s, and are not as efficient as the classic horizontal axis design. That is why they are not used, except for cases where output/efficiency does not matter. I thought they looked cool too, but then I started digging around. . .
very inefficient design 20% efficient Savonius Rotor
you get 40% with with smaller blades like airplane wing Darrieus Design
yea, really. hundreds of watts from each of those, maybe in the peak of a hurricane. they're not high production turbines. the classic style is used much more often because it works. even if the turbine has to turn to face into the wind, that's not hurting production so much as it is auto tuning the production and getting the most out of it. these vertical ones on the other hand, they're good because wind can come in from any direction, but when they're lined up like he has them... well, you've ruined the only benefit that style of turbine has.
I don't like the titel "mad scientist". He is a genius. His wind turbines power from all directions blew my mind. Thank you very much!

Amazing! I did a hydroponics project with a friend of mine in seventh grade for a science fair, that was back in the early 60s. People did look for healthy alternatives to growing food and living communities in the mid-sixties, and that was very much a part of the hippie movement, in the late 60s, early 70s.
I can’t help but wonder if this would have taken off more for home gardeners back then if work hours hadn’t become so long in this country. Most employers think they own the people that work for them now, and people have nothing left after finishing their crazy hours, so they watch a little Netflix to turn off their brain and fall asleep. Amazing content! What an incredible system. Great for producing commercial quantities, or long term production on a homestead. Long term, cause the high cost of the system makes the food too expensive in small quantities unless amortised over a long time. Which is why Larry emphasises how durable it it is. But as the cost of natural resources increases, the system becomes more feasible. And people can grow what they need locally on very small/urban plots. I presume (hope) those plastics are made from recycled materials. The turbines look very interesting!

❤ what the veggie section at the store SHOULD LOOK LIKE! Fresh, no preservatives.
This guy seems great and I love what he’s doing. However as someone with two masters degrees in engineering and having written a thesis on small wind turbine design I can confirm that what this guy is saying is almost completely wrong. There are many reasons horizontal axis is more efficient but the main one is you get much higher rpm which leads to more efficient generation of electricity. Additionally building those vertical turbines so close together will significantly reduce efficiency as will the version with solar panels on top. General rule of thumb is you want the turbine away from any other objects to more consistant wind speed. He is correct that vertical axis turbines deal better with wind direction changing but by putting them all next to each other this advantage is completely lost. Imagine when the wind direction changes and blows end on to those turbines, the ones at the back would get almost no wind. Changing wind direction is not the main problem when optimising wind turbines.
Putting wind turbines by roadsides is often a terrible idea. What is generating that wind? Cars. They are generating it by burning petroleum. Putting turbines here means that cars are burning more fuel on this road section because there will be more drag on the cars...
Given that he is using the power to pump water this is an ideal situation for solar power, pumping water up and storing it high is one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly ways of storing power. This is what hydro dams to store power, they pump water back up. If he raised those tanks up a few meters and made them bigger he could just pump water when it’s sunny and let it gravity feed back down. It would be a much cheaper setup and more reliable than using those wind turbines.
He is on the same level of bs with the towers as well. He claims he invented things he did not. He claims that most tower-system doesn't circulate the water and that is a plain lie. I've never come across a system that did not and I've been focusing on hydroponics for the last 6-7 years. He's prices are sky-high on his webshop btw so about not making money...
Also, the % of how much water that is not wasted is not impressive at all. That is the general standard of a hydroponic system and has been like that even when US army made a setup during ww2. The pots are just a joke when it comes to the arguments he has. He makes a strawman out of other products failing. Holland is the 2nd largest exporter of food. They got gigantic greenhouses and none of them uses anything like his pots. So, they are using a less good product then? The experts in this field knows less than this guy? No. He lying. Just plain lies. If he would argue that "my pots are a bit better than most commercial systems if you want to grow at home" then he is almost in the ballpark for telling the truth. That is until you see that the prices he has for this pots are like 500% profit margin...
And when it comes to the turbines, then have a look at the company called "Capture Mobility". They made the turbine like 2011, but this guy...
I just hate to see people like this guy. The comments in here shows how unaware people are in this fields. Both power and agriculture. There are lots of products out there that are better than what this guy is making. It's also not hard to grow tomato's. Plenty of youtube channels that shows you how to do it. Just look for someone who is in your climate zone if you want to grow out doors.

12:30 , no wind turbines are made on the basis of alternator, they are basically some form of BLDC or PMSM which internally operates just like a 3 phase AC induction motor. PMSM motors are about as efficient as you can get.
Stop being so pedantic.
Everyone who understands what he built knows that alternator is the wrong terminology, but for the inexperienced or lay person this video was directed to, alternator as an understandable word from your car as being able to generate electricity from the rotational momentum and so was the correct word to use.

I so love and respect the ideals you hold in durability and eficiency combined! This combined with vertical growing. I would like to combine this with aquaponics.
Love your channel! You feature amazing people with the most wonderful ideas that are actually beneficial to the earth as well. Thank you!
You have obviously streamlined your system and I like the watering/feeding layout. I would like to install that on my property.
Good for those who can afford it. A single patio version starts at $499. If someone can afford that, awesome to grow your own food. Maybe it will help get more people into gardening.
You spend that on groceries for 1person for 6 months you can make your money back quickly if you think ahead... or try to save up... food is never easy 💔💖❤️hang in there you’ll get it if you try...
@@virginiaallisonpeck2517 I spend maybe $100 on groceries. I have a garden actually..Permaculture in the ghetto I call it. Turned my small yard into food production. Organics is too expensive to buy.
@@lunardiinferi6114 I was just trying to be encouraging... I wish you the best...
@@virginiaallisonpeck2517 I wasn't offended. no worries
if you look a little closer you can get 50 pots for $499... that is 25 towers that you build yourself
Wow... I am out of words, it’s just super awesome 👏
Thank you for creating this video so everyone knows that there’s a system out there for a small group of families could chip in and help feed them and maybe others less fortunate and God Bless this gentleman and producer and Humanity if you seek you will find
I love his energy, passion and innovation.
His Tiny Farm idea, if added to a fish aquaculture component could go a long way in small communities to allay any food “insecurity”.
I would put one of the power systems on my cabin, but I have not gotten response when trying to contact him, however. Hoping it is just because they are super busy.
Seeing that he has a market for rooftop farmers in Lagos Nigeria has me stocked!!
Wow
He's definitely taking us into the future of farming, in a very green clean way
Thank you for sharing 👍
One of the best channels on CZcams! Thank you!
Hi Sparkyin
How are you today?🌹🌺
Kirsten! Thanks so much for bringing awareness of all the different sustainable homes & gardens that you have found... always looking forward to your videos! Great job lady.
Your location is ideal like any business that's successful, very inspirational vid thanks
See a man like this is one i think we can all agree is an honest man. He can sell you for his own gain because he has the product, but he would much rather just makes sure it really does benefit others rather than to be selfish like other business owners
Just found this, not a gardener, but this is freaking amazing. Tks for posting this guy. I love this guy.
Hi! Love the inginuity... Would be very interested in seeing how you're holding up with the current storm in Texas, hope all is well
We are actually the mad ones for not considering Larry's idea.
why. It has too many parts and it is basically trying to not only reinvent the wheel, but make it automated.
The reason why people are not using this, is because you can literally stick seeds in the ground, tend them, and let the rain do all the work watering it for the cost of a hoe, a pack of seeds, and a little sweat.
This has turned that system into a quarter million dollar excess.
Such awesome projects showcased, as usual! Thank YOU!
