What an ariostea that day! And they seem real friends, the same that was in gewiss ballan, when they all worked compact for Furlan one race, for Berzin in the other, and for the Captain on the third.. Marvelous!
Roche's epic work ethos when riding in a break really impresses yet again. He rode totally impartially and had the sense to drop team rivalries, and try to engender a team ethos out there on the road for that period of time to everyone's benefit. In his autobiography "Hunger", everything Sean Kelly said about Alcala seems to ring true. The guy is just lazy, and probably arrogant. Here we have Roche and Van Lanker breaking their backs to close the gap, and that fat lazy ass just sits on his hole at the back and doesn't take one turn at the front, constantly letting the last worker in front of his wheel. Then after PLENTY time to recover himself at his leisure at the back, he decides to attack the guys who had worked so hard to get his ass to where it was right now. What a scumbag.
@Sionnach1601 Uhhhh...yea...that's just smart racing...maybe not "honorable", but smart...good racing is all about saving your energy for when you can best use it. There is no rule in racing that says everyone has to take their share of pulls. If someone isn't doing their share of the work, it is up to the other riders to do all they can to drop the racer who is sitting in. "Scumbags" do things like ride their competitors into the barriers during a sprint...sitting in is just a legitimate tactic that can be very effective in the right circumstance. Maybe if Roche hadn't worked so hard, Alcala would have felt more of a need to pitch in...that's part of the beauty of racing...it is a giant chess match with everyone trying to call each other's bluff to get the "other guy" to do more work!
It's funny...cause at the time...no one took note.. That Indurain was coming into form slowly.... Thinking back he rode a conservative Vuelta to finish 2nd....His main goal for season was the Tour de France!!!...👊🏾
Thanks Classic Cycling for sharing this btw. It really could have done without the music, which was badly balanced against Liggett's VO at times. Seriously, location sound is a LOT more dramatic in my opinion as it gives you the sense that you're really there, and at times you'll think it's live. But thanks anyway for uploading this for us. It was wonderful to watch this level racing on steel bikes at the pinnacle of their engineering.
One of my countrymate, Criquielion, deserved to win this race in his career. He was one of the best rider of that era.

Dejected by yet another defeat at this, his home race, to the 'super charged' Argentin, Criquielion retired shortly after this race.
I know....sheesh....it really was a pity for Criquelion alright being his home race. But to be fair, he put in a damn good showing for it.

Was argentin already on epo in 1991? I doubt it. He got insane in 1994

Those were the days. Before the EPO. Or was it? Well, it started sometime in the early 90's. What a finish. Too bad Sørensen had to work for Argentin.
Epo was already known and used at that time.
