I am 71 a member of Havurah shalom in Somerville Massachusetts and I have never had a bar mitzvah!

I was told it was a fairly recent invention, and NOT a necessity for practicing Judaism.

Unfortunately that they don't explain that you actually become obligated in mitzvot too!
And the ceremony that many people do. Usually the Bar Mitzvah boy reads from the Torah and get blessed by his parents and the rabbi. This is not obligated but very common. Would have been good to mention in the video.
