Guys, there is no law against anyone wearing any tartan they please. You're taking all this Clan tartan thing way, way too seriously.
Here, in Scotland, we'll wear a family tartan if we can, but failing that we'll just wear whatever tartan we fancy. Kilts are very rarely worn except for special occasions, graduations, weddings, etc, and even then they are very far from being mandatory. Oh, and kilts are sometimes worn to amuse the tourists - they seem to like it.
By all means be respectful, that's only good manners, but remember that we do have a sense of humour. We often laugh at ourselves and our own culture, so a little friendly joshing is unlikely to cause offence.

Respectfully, I will say this... In ANY country, there are those who take this type of thing VERY seriously and those who are much more easy going with it. That goes for the US, Canada, Germany and EVEN Scotland.
We tend to fall somewhere in the middle, though we know a lot of people on both ends of the spectrum. :-)

Yes, I'm sure that even in Scotland you might come across some people who would take it all VERY seriously, but the other 99%+ of the population would regard these people as mildly insane. We might humour them in their beliefs because, quite frankly, it's just not worth trying to argue with such people, but that would be about the limit of our indulgence.
You do realise that the whole "Clan Tartan" thing was made up in the mid 1850's, off the back of the Walter Scott novels and Queen Victoria's and Prince Albert's fascination with Scotland, as a kind of ersatz tradition? It's true that particular weaving patterns would be handed down from generation to generation within families, and the colours used would be those natural dyes most readily available in the local area and, consequently, the appearance of a tartan might not change much over the years. However, there would have been no proprietorial sense of the weave or colours being 'intellectual property'. If they had some spare cloth they would have quite happily sold it to anyone who was willing to pay, regardless of the absence of any family connection.
So, by all means, enjoy the tradition for what it is, but remember that there are no "official" rules about who can wear what tartan.
We play with these traditions ourselves in Scotland. I'll be wearing a kilt, in my family tartan, myself in a few months time at my daughter's wedding - but it just so happens that I like the modern blue version of my family tartan. If I didn't I would wear something else. My daughter's intended does not like his clan tartan and will wear something else.

Well said . I wear a kilt every day and always wear them with pride and respect . To me the middle ground is the most sensible. Have respect for the garment that represents a culture but don't get pedantic about the whole thing . It is supposed to be an enjoyable endeavor after all .

I'm not Scottish and I married a Corcoran from Sherbrooke, Quebec. They're of Irish descent, so I thought they wouldn't have a tartan all. However, I just found out that there is a registered tartan for Corcoran of Sherbrooke in the Register! It was registered in 1994 and originating from the Estrie area of Quebec where Sherbrooke is located.

I am of Irish descent so, I would have to go with a county tartan. I was a Volunteer Fire Fighter and also US Coast Guard Member so I could go one of those ways.

My surname is Heron and me family originate from Galloway . Because we are lowlanders my particular branch of heron can only wear the Galloway regional tartan which is the actual clan clan Galloway tartan anyway it is a great looking tartan . My family have been in Galloway since the 10 hundreds and we can only wear regional tartan . We where actually a clan up until the 1800s until the male line died out but we still wear crest with pride . But tartan can be a complicated thing with some lowland families . Me personally I will always stick with my paternal family my mother is Davidson it's got to be the father's colours
