I'm a beginner rider shopping for a small engine ADV bike. Thank you so much for your review, it made a difference on my decision to purchase my own Versys X300. So love riding mine :)

Great Vid! I've had my X300 for just over 3 years and still love it. Mods for trail guys: I'm 6'3" and 215 lbs. I'm 73 and have had back surgery so I stand more than most. I really needed bar risers - I chose 2 inch Pivoting Rox risers. I also dropped the pegs one inch with Motowerks lowering blocks (specific for the X300. SEAT: I hated the seat/ too hard - now love it. I got a Mad Dog ADV seat cushion then put a SitNFly brand seat cover over that. it is a cushion that allows great airflow under your behind but also adds softness (no hot spots). I strongly suggest that seat cover, whether or not you put padding under it. I ride off road (gravel roads, Jeep trails, etc) as well as pavement, so I added a T-Rex skid plate and T-Rex engine guards. I also fabricated a light bar that attaches to the front of the engine guards (where they meet under the headlight) and used Auxbeam 4" LED lights (spot). Since I sometimes travel, I added Givi luggage racks then adapted Pelican cases (second hand from eBay) to those racks, then adapted a third case to the factory top rack. Most lately I mounted Mitas E07+ tires and love them / great 50/50 tire. I even did some mountain pass Jeep roads in our area. I still need to do something with the wind buffeting problem, mostly at highway speeds. THANKS AGAIN for an excellent review. I ride a 1200cc and have been interested in the versys 300 for a few years. All the praise it gets and once you get past bigger isn't always better, it seems like the perfect bike.
I own one since 2018. I tour a lot with it (6000+ km around Scandinavia, 4000+ km in Ireland), it's just an amazing bike that accomodates perfectly my very long legs, even better than many much bigger bikes. Now and then I fancy looking at buying bigger bikes, but I constantly think of what they could offer more than my Kawa for the substantial additional cost, sometimes even more than double...
Funnest, most versatile bike I've ever owned. Still cannot believe I get 65-75+ mpg. If you lug it you could see 80+ mpg easily due to engine config-rpms. It is paying for itself almost. I ride around on the mountains/byways of PA on mine for now. It is still smallish enough to easily hitch-hitch to back of my van.
It isn't a small bike by any means, not small like the enduros/dual sports 100-250cc I've always ridden. I did own a couple 400s for not long due to disabilities making it impossible to completely operate them safely. The seat height, ergos, made them totally unsuitable for my knee/leg.
I've owned a few scooters as well over the years. They sit well with my issues. I've had a spinal cord injury as well but I'm good to go though and can easily ride the X300 pretty much anywhere safely and comfortably. I do have an XT225. It physically feels like half of a Versys 300 lol.
One of the main reasons I got it, vs a scooter. It reminds me of a scooter because of that whir of the twin, lol. Anyways, mine has all the main mods and then some. It is a blast everytime I ride it. I will check out the other vids see if they ever got a taller windscreen. I did and I had to clip my beard pretty good due to biker beard. .
This bike is geared very low stock as usual with smaller displacement bikes. It is perfect if you love to tractor on trails and single track, it handles incredibly well in the standing position once you put peg adapters etc on it. It is great to safari at night with the fog lights on and tractoring through fields and this and that.

Yes blows my mind. I'm amazed with the possible mph with my 2020 300x.. Off the bat, I had swapped out the front sprocket to a 15 t. It helped me with a faster break-in also.
Yes that windscreen is a tiny joke. If no manufacturer offers a larger one like a Givi Touring model (game changer on my Burgman 400) - why not try one of the several large tall "Universal Fit" mirror or handlebar mount ones ?
I've seen 2 or 3 nice looking ones listed on Amazon.

Love your channel. Agree with you on the seat, not the best but it's ok. Bought mine new in 2019 & still love the bike. Ideal commuter which is it's main purpose for me.
Bought my 2017 as a leftover in 2018. They were discounted heavily back then. Mine was ABS I got the factory fog lights (great so idiots see you) Center Stand, and the Aux Plug. I have 22k miles on mine and do my oil changes exactly by mileage in manual but I did the first oil change at 500 miles to get the break in oil out. The original chain lasted 10k. The original tires lasted 6k but they sucked! Put on Continental Attacks on and it was so much better. Seat fucking sucks! I had Terry's custom seats in Tennessee make me one and OMG my ass loves it. The 300 is an excellent bike and not being super fast keeps me from doing stupid shit. I love that it revs like a banshee so it is not boring to ride. Just an amazing little bike!
😆, I was just out today looking at bikes and this one was one I looked at thinking it would suit my needs nicely. So I came home to find you got one and posted a video on it. Been watching your channel for a while now.
I've been looking to get a new daily rider for a couple of years now and am finally in a position to make the purchase. It's hard balancing my wants with my needs to fit the purpose. I want a modern classic, but after much though find that a small ADV or dual sport would fill my needs and be a better experience over time. They just don't have the cool style of things like the Bonneville, Moto Guzzi or Royal Enfield. I will still keep my FZ6 for spirited riding and touring if I go the dual sport route.
Since it's my daily, it's also hard purchasing without getting a chance to ride beforehand. I understand the dealers position, but if you are serious (or even not) about buying a car you get to test it out and make sure it will work for you. I realize motorcycles are toys to most Americans, but it's my main vehicle and a big commitment (investment) for me.
Anyhow, I look forward to your review(s) on the Versys. Thanks!

Nice vid, I live in Asia, so the Versys is actually a "big" bike here (250 only, tax/license limits). Last year I rented one for my two months stay on Bali. This is a really nice bike, it does feel like a solid, full size bike especially coming off my 150cc Hondas. All that you say about the bike I agree with, the suspension is basic but it's calibrated correctly. Fit and finish is nice, your color combo is super nice. The engine is just fine, in my opinion it even produces reasonable amount of torque at Versys "low" rpm. The seat sucks, here it was $8 fix at a local seat shop, just softer foam layer. Other than that, right from the factory, strap a bag on the back and the bike is ready to go. I went with the 300 Rally as I spent lot more time in the "dirt", but boy I wish I also had the Versys.
Great review! I own a Versys x300 & thoroughly enjoy this small but yet capable touring bike. I’ve customised the bike to my needs & comfort, with bar rises, more off road tires, panniers, crash bars etc & agree the seat needs an upgrade. Otherwise this bike ticked a lot of the boxes for me. Best thing Price, proven engine, availability of after market accessories. Great little touring/commuting motorcycle for both the learner riders plus experience riders looking for that fun factor. Had mine 2019 it a great bike. Replace it with seat concept it great for this bike. Mileage is really great. Full tank you could do around 435 km. You can ask for more from it. Smooth ride good for touring purpose for people who ride n enjoy scenic ride. Easy to ride around town. For highway you can do at top speed 165 KPH. Fuel consumption is really great

The headlight. LEDs are brighter where they shine, but the whiter/bluer (high color temp) nature for most of them does reduce your left & right-side night vision/resolution for detecting deer or other critters that are potentially running into your pathway. A low color temp LED (yellowish) will increase the clarity of your entire field of view in darkness. Perhaps wearing yellow tinted hunting glasses when riding with high color temp LEDs in the dark or on foggy days would counteract the intense, on-center dazzle problem created with high color temp LEDs. Knowledgeable hunters & aircraft pilots wear brown or yellow tinted glasses for a reason: improving vision acuity when searching for game or for airborne traffic through the haze or drizzle. For your saddle, consider adding a Bead-rider wooden bead seat cover. I used to have a Nighthawk 750 with an uncomfortable factory saddle; then I I tried an Airhawk aircushion pad for $75+ which did not improve saddle comfort at all. Then I bought a new $300+ Corbin saddle which added "a lot more weight", improved comfort very slightly and really didn't fit the bike very well despite that it was specifically made for my Honda. Finally I tried a Bead-rider on the Honda Nighthawk 750 OEM seat: long distance monkey butt and sweaty summer hot-spot problems both eliminated for about $35.

15:00 I had the Seat Concepts kit for my Versys 650. You don’t need to send your seat to them. They send you the kit and you just need an upholstery tool to install it, or pay a shop who does seats to install it.
Great video. I regret selling my 2020 Versys X300. The seat sucks. I purchased a Seat Concepts which is better but still not great. I added a Corbin which was awesome. I also changed the front sprocket which help lower the RPM’s at highway speeds.
Thanks sir for the upload..you covered this bike in in a great way and convinced me to buy one here in the Philippines...yes we do have them here lol....and there are 7,100 islands to tour ...great vid sir...the only things I don't like is black rims and the clock cluster which reminds me of my old 600 Yamaha Fazer I had in the past I rather have the clock like the Kawasaki 600 full digital screen ...thanks sir again ...

I've had mine for two months. I like the bike and it's not meant for speed but you can cruise easy 65 mph and you can add fog lights and crash bar which I just installed and next is the skid plate. I ride the versys x300 through canyons and just cruise..

I love my Kawasaki x300 Versys! I have owned a lot of motorcycles and can honestly say that this Kawasaki x300 is by far the best motorcycle I have ever owned. I purchased my almost new 2017 Kawasaki X300 Versys a few months ago. It had 1540 miles on the odometer and looks absolutely brand new! It was delivered to me by the original owner on Tuesday April 13, 2022 which is the first day that I rode my new motorcycle. The previous owner rode it to my state so that he could rest assured that I would register and title his motorcycle before he turned it over to me. First let me say that I am 68 years old. I am 5-10" tall, weigh 269 pounds and I have a 29/30" pants inseam. I looked all over for specifics on whether this motorcycle would be a good fit for me. I knew it was tall with the seat height at 30.9". But would I fit this motorcycle well. I already had a bad experience owning a 2002 BMW R1150GS that was a huge machine, a real monster. That BMW proved much too tall and heavy for me to safely handle so I sold it right away. I replaced that BMW with a 2001 R1200C Pheonix which proved much more manageable with it's seat height of a mere 29.9". But it is a 1200cc machine which means it is VERY heavy! So I bought a little Honda Grom which proved to be so much fun that I thought to myself, "wow, look at what I have been missing." Then I discovered a Blog online where a girl named Noraly is riding her 2022 Honda CRF300L from South America to Alaska. She calls her site "Itchy Boots" where she posts 3 videos per week on average. After watching her great adventures for a couple of months I decided that I must have a motorcycle just like hers. But then I discovered that the Honda CRF300L is nearly impossible to acquire right now unless you are willing to pay $2,000 over MSRP. Yikes. That is when I discovered the 310 BMW and the X300 Kawasaki Versys. I went with the Versys for several reasons. First, it was availability. Next was value and finally after watching many reviews on CZcams I liked the twin cylinder water cooled engine making 40hp. So I bought one! I have ridden it 400 miles so far. This is what I can report. First, it IS TALL. We lowered the rear shocks to the lowest factory settings and now I can almost flat foot the motorcycle. It actually seems manageable although I almost dropped it going up the ramp into my shop the other day. Scared me a bit. The motorcycle is whisper quiet. I like this because my Honda Grom snarls like a mad dog with it's aftermarket Vance & Hines pipe. Really it is too loud. But the X300 has a very nice exhaust note. I do not plan to change this. Next, This motorcycle handles beautifully. The ride height seems tall but the bike is so friendly in every situation. I just love my new X300. Finally, this motorcycle is geared very low. Extremely low. But I guess Kawasaki wanted it this way. I go through the gears to find that I am in 5th at 37mph lol. I hit 6th at about 43 mph and that is the last gear. It seems like it should have a 7th & 8th gear lol. The bike redlines at 12,000 rpm. Whoa, that makes it a screaming machine. When you ride 65mph the engine turns 7,500 rpm. This is very alien to me and seems insane. But there is tons more throttle left after that, all the way to 12,000rpm. Amazing! This bike gets 51mpg so the high rpm must be efficient. I researched re-gearing the bike but you cannot alter it very much without disturbing the engine's code(s). For this reason I plan to leave mine all stock. Finally, the seat is very hard, most uncomfortable. I rode 40 miles today and my Fanny wanted off of this torture device. I guess I am spoiled by the Corbin Seat on my BMW R1200C. Finally, my biggest concern was, "will this motorcycle have enough power to haul my fat butt around lol". Yes it does! The low gearing is so powerful that this little Kawasaki doesn't even know that I am onboard. I get the impression that the X300 could carry a circus elephant if one was so inclined. I hope this little report will help others decide to buy a X300 Versys. I sure am happy with mine. So lite and easy to handle. That is where the fun is!!!
I too bought a Versys X 300 after watching Itchy Boots! This was in November last year. She was trying this desert race in South Africa on the Honda CRF 250 L she had then, and I got so inspired. Googled bikes that size, found a Versys for sale, tried it and bought it. First bike for me in over 15 years, I too had a handful of bikes before, mostly super sports bikes, and one more gravel oriented, but never anything this small displacement. It's just so much fun, I love it 🤗

hey man, thx for the vid. this is one of the most informative vids on the 2022 x300 that ive watched and it only reinforces my decision that the '22 x300 is the bike im going to buy as soon as i have the funds available. i havent had a bike simce i lost mine in a fire a few yrs ago, so im dying to get on a bike and the x300 seems so smooth, which you back up in your video. the one question i have, ive been thinking about switching out the tires right off for a set of mitas e07 tires, as ive read the stocm tires arent good for off roads and i plan to ride a good deal on fire roads, do you think the stock tires are inadequate in this way also? the taller windscreen definitely will be on order, as im your same height and hand guards and a bash plate are two other musts i have on the list. anyway, again, thx for the vid for sure.
I have e07s on my bike, and it made a huge difference off road. The stock tires are road tires for sure.
Have a 17 model. Love it. The seat is not worse or better than anything else.
I put the 15 tooth front sprocket on mine and it made the bike even more amazing, I highly recommend it, great video you made, cheers

The sprocket change did not cause any problems, no codes , very happy I did it

Seat concepts is the way to go , not expensive quick return on the finished seat for my 650 Versys

Just picked this exact bike a few hours ago. Fucking love it!!!! Gotta find some panniers for it. And a taller windscreen. Exact same colors!!!! You just answered about my clutch. I really need to adjust it. I had that same complaint about it revving too high.
Puig makes a good wind screen, I have one it is 6" taller with a light tint. Used it all this year, big difference over the stock screen.
I'm sold on this bike too, it's all I need to be happy and ride.

Just running into your video I have a 2017 versys and love it I did changed the windshield for smoke one and tall big difference on the freeway I also ride a Goldwing but my versys it is s great explore bike it can hold 75 comfy i do need a diffent seat is not great for long trips just for two hrs and I have to stop and rest my bud

I borrowed a friend’s a few times and it kind of really had me confused, it punches way above expectations, and it’s actually really good off road on light fire trail. Most likely get a 2024 one with the lights and the panniers they have a few specials going on at the moment. I currently have a 2017 Harley Iron 883 fab bike, but want a small touring adventure bike that’s ready cost effective.
Saw elsewhere where they peeled back the seat material, cut out a portion of the hard foam and replaced it with softer foam, seat fixed.
I'm 75 and I was 6'1" and now I'm 5'10". Mine runs 75 at 9000 with a 14 / 46 stock sprockets. My last fill-up at 210 miles didn't take 4 gals. Too old for a Harley, so I'm now on the 300X. I'm in the process of installing a 15 /45 and new chain. Also put a center stand on first thing. i really am happy with it, but I would like a new mini, probably a 150cc Grom clone. Enjoy it.
Hi Rand, just noticed your post. I'm 74 myself and still ride regularly (not in winter - I live in SW Colorado at 7550 ft elevation near Durango - 14 inches of snow right now). I have two other bikes, a Husaberg FE390 dirt bike and a Suzuki Vstrom 650 XT for longer trips - but I still ride the X300 as a lightweight commuter and still love it after nearly 4 years. (See my post above for more info.) I'm 6'3" and 215 lbs, so I lowered the pegs and raised the bars 2 inches, and the bike fits me better than I ever thought possible. I stand often and this bike, as set up, is perfect. KEEP RIDING!
This is my bike, my first motorcycle as a matter of fact. Excellent if all you want to do is commute, ride around town, or go on short adventures on mild dirt roads. It was a great starter but I probably outgrew it at this point and I am looking for something more powerful and dirt worthy like a KTM 890 adv, Tenere 700, or Aprilia Tuareg 660.
BTW seat does break down some after some time on the saddle, but it is still firm. Invest on a good seat, it's worth it.
It was my first bike, id take it in the dirt over a tenere 700 just because its lighter, i wish it had the ninja 400 engine
I have the 2022 myself was wondering how to install the USB port it’s funny how everything you’ve talked about I have the same exact bike and I’ve had it the same amount of time I drive about 15 minutes to work on the interstate and I use nothing but non-ethanol I’ve noticed gas mileage has been much better then with ethanol. That’s my question too why aren’t they using the LEDs they’re brighter you’ll be able to see more of the road I wonder if you can put one on this or if you have to have a special type of connection for the headlights and all
Matt Gecko LED headlight for this thing is 100% worth the money. It’s spendy, but completely plug and play, has a sick looking X shape DRL, and LED high and low. Seat concepts tall seat for me at 6 ft was worth it for the comfort and leg room. Finally the 15t countershaft sprocket is needed. Brings the RPM down 500 in each gear.

As far as the seat goes… I have a 2019 300X and I noticed a vast improvement once I hit about 1000 miles. I’m sure a custom seat is still much better, but the stock seat does improve with time.

It breaks in with the more seat time you have on it. It gets better than when new, but still not great on longer trips.
The stock seat is hot garbage and jams your balls into the tank when you brake and kills your ass after 2 hours! Junk it
A Yoshimura fender eliminator really improves the look of the bike as well.
Just order a Seat Concepts seat. They have ready made seats. I’ve had Corbin seats, I prefer the Seat Concepts.
you should have put the bag in the rear rack . is beutyfull little bike good on gas ? i been thinking about one of this but is to pretty for off road to much plastic to demage . iwant klx 300 but they dont have abs . for now i do off road on my mt bicycle on summer . on winter on my air cooled 230 klx abs dualsport . ialso have a vulcan s with all the extras for road trips abs . and a mp3 piaggio 500 abs 3 wheel scooter for roads .waiting for klx 300 liquid cool abs trade my klx 230 for it .

I agree with you about the Bell Qualifier, I have one with the MIPS technology, that thing is loud with anything over 40mph. I use it as my cruise around helmet, and use one of my other helmets for long distance rides.

Still have the ADV 150. Currently setting it up for some travel stuff.
I'm told its wise to step up one tooth on the front sprocket, Thats maybe allow you better gearing.
when you are in deep rural area, where you going to get led bulbs? is it not easier to get normal bulbs anywhere since it is an adventure bike?
LED bulbs have a much longer lifespan, but in reality, headlights rarely burn out. Not to mention the chances of finding a direct replacement headlamp for any bike at a corner store are pretty much zero.
I would like it all in black with some guards.
I fixed my versys x seat with a sheep skin. It’s good for the whole day

Kawasaki makes an upgrade seat about an inch taller and about $250. I found it to be 100% more comfortable with a short break in. The standard seat was absolutely awful. Mine is a 2019. 63 mpg consistant no matter how I drive.

do you think the bike would benefit from slightly taller gearing like adding 1 tooth to front sprocket ?or removing 1 or 2 teeth from the rear ? and still have the ability to hold 65 mph ?but get a bit better mpg..????if say I used it to commute 10.6 miles to work and back each day ?? back roads never getting over 65mph ....unless passing a slow poke .......really like the Versys out of all of my options ..and I live in the country so no interstate highways normally ....
I’m going to swap the front sprocket for a 15 tooth in the future. Bring down the RPM’s at higher speeds and stretch out that very short gearing.
A 10 mile commute isn't worth changing it over this bike will eat that up laughing even at 70-75 mph.

I really like it but there are just a few things id expect that feel a bit outdated. No led headlight, no guard (those pipes location worries me), the bit simplistic display, no adjustable duel for, etc... Nothing crazy but at this price point it feel like you get a lot more form the $1000 more KTM 390 ADV. its a very nice bike, but you give up a lot of "extras" I feel for the, to be fair, extremely nice visuals.
Cannot compare with 390, quality is not the same. 390 is known to have problems, this is why I didn't purchase it. Specially when you live in asia you need something trustable and easy to fix. Can be good deal if you have dealers nearby only.
I have heard that the bike has problems starting on slopes since the torque is delivered at high rpms.

Lol it has no problem on the hills. And the torque is available right away it's the horsepower that comes on at high rpms.
It reminds you of your ninja 300 probably because it has the same engine as the ninja 300? Just my guess, they are not going to make a new 300 engine when they already had one. Probably just detuned differently.
This versus the himalayan? Both seem to do the same for a new rider, albeit the himalayan will get there slower.
That was the exact choice I made. The Himalayan is so cool. But I have a Kawasaki dealer here in town, and I liked the twin engine. I love my Versys. On a ride a couple weeks ago, two guys rode in on Himalayan’s. They sure are cool looking, but the Versys is no slouch in the looks department either.
I had the Himalayan, if your off road mostly, I like the idea of a 500 cc thumper, the twin will give you a smoother ride on the road, i sold the Himalayan with 500 miles, honestly , I didn't like it. Rough ride on the road, pretty decent off road, I now have a 2021 kawi vaquero for road trips, but I still am considering a versys for a secondary bike, so cool and smooth, kawi makes a good product, ty for the review
A taller windshield works great in the rain until you stop.
I have the taller wind shield on my 22 versysx and it gets rid of the wind bufiting on my face. It makes riding with open face helmets much nicer…. I’m 72 and 5 foot 8….

you can change where your clutch lever engages without getting a new lever. Break-in recommendations are for the lawyers. Kawasaki wants you to get used to the bike before you start getting crazy on it. That's all the break-in is really all about. The bikes are all run to redline in every gear at the manufacturers before you ever see it and it comes to you about 80% broke-in.
