    Starting in the center…. Great idea! The only difference is that I put the blocking mats on my bed because the floor hurts, I don’t have much floor space. Sometimes I put a cardboard cutting board underneath the blocking mats for stability and at the end of the day, lift it all sideways against the wall or take to another room if nec so I can sleep on my bed. The foam
    blocking mats would have come apart were it not for the Dritz cardboard cutting board pinned underneath.

    I usually pin the top edge or straight edge first. Then I go to the middle, bottom edge and pull it tight to where I want it. Then I pin out from the center. That way when I pull the bottom, all the lace opens up and I can see where to pin it. Your shawl turned out beautiful. I'm thinking of making this shawl. Thank you for showing us how you block your shawls.

    We survived the heat just here in the uk 🇬🇧 with no AC it was very testing, left work at 3pm as it was 34 degrees in the farm shop with fans on 🥵 not much knitting got done that day just a little crochet 😊

    Hi thanks interesting to see how you pinned the inner sections, regarding outer edges I usually thread my blocking wires thru each picot of the bind edge off then pin the wires every 4 or 5 pivots.

    You make me wish I hadn't frogged mine! My colors were all wrong anyway. But you have truly inspired me to give it another go. So beautiful! I also really enjoyed the content. I have been knitting for 16 years, but it seem like some of these things, like blocking, are not really shared... or just hinted at, like a trade secret, lol.

    I love blocking my knitting it is truly magical what the fiber and the stitches do after a nice soak and a little shaping ( or stretching in the case of a lace project)
    I’m very fortunate to have a spare bed to lay my mats on so I don’t have to crawl around on the floor! I always point a little fan at my drying mats to speed things along and it really helps 👍🏻

    Congrats on the stunning shawl! Fun watching you block it. My absolute favorite blocking tool is sets of blocking combs - thus far they seem to do the job perfectly in all situations I've encountered without the need for wires and are much less fiddly than the single pins (which are perfect for some things but I've found they can cause puckering if you're using them just for a straight edge).

    Absolutely stunning shawl, beautiful work and yes it was a bit hotter than we are used to here in the UK this week at 39 degrees centigrade! It was unbearable in the school where I work, with 30 children crammed in a tiny classroom with no shade and no air conditioning! Lots of little children feeling very poorly at the end of the day. Good job. Thanks I have never blocked a shawl like that. instead I would have added the more flexible wires on the bottom picot edge and then just stretched it as far as I could and pin it there to stabilize the wires. By slipping the wires through each point, you get a real standardized shape. Also once pinned, I stand back about 10 ft. from it and see if anything loos asymmetrical and needs to be adjusted.

    • @Voolenvine

    That's beautiful. I'm always fascinated by how blocking turns knitting into a beautiful piece of flowing fabric. Cooler here in London yesterday. Hope you were okay. Just double checking something - you don't need to rinse in plain water, just soak and spin?

    • @Voolenvine
      @Voolenvine  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you, Valerie! So glad to hear you're finally getting some cooler weather. 😪And great question ... Yes! I should have mentioned that I soak shawls in lukewarm-tepid water. No need to rinse the wool soak out, if using any. If you don't have a spin-dryer, you can roll your knitting up in a towel and gently press the excess water out. I hope that helps!

    • @Voolenvine
      @Voolenvine  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks, Amy! 💖 Hmm.. I've never experienced a rolling wave effect. I think if you keep the border straight and flat when weaving in the wires, it should be fine. Also weaving them in and out evenly and securing them with pins.
