Before the advent of low gearing of today's groupsets the mere mortals of the mid pack are off and pushing through accumalated fatigue by that point !

Used to watch it in the 70s it’s one brutal event. I used to race on Alan frames cyclocross and road they dominated cyclocross in the 70s
