We are in Chihuahua Mexico, and have been establishing lots of Moringa, out of its normal climate range - high desert climate that can freeze in winter. Last year we discovered super frost protection - made cylinder of fence wire (about 2-ft diameter) to surround the cut-back trunk , then filled with oat straw (or other hay, grass, etc.). Adjust size to fit tree if more mature or multi-trunk. Come spring the straw went on the compost pile. Renewable, organic, free (we had the wire on hand), and it WORKED. Also worked on citrus, which had always sustained frost damage before.

I started a few moringa seeds a few weeks back. I’m in Alabama zone 7b. I was planning to overwinter them inside. Do you think I could possibly plant them in the ground & cut them down like that & then mulch them really good?
Great info. I live in Atlanta. Last year I had three very healthy growing moringa trees each one grew up to 12-20 ft before beginning of winter in my backyard. I did covered the foot of the main branch with mulch and covered the main branch with insulation wrap thats used for copper pipes that we usually get at home depot. After winter, when I opened it up, everything dried up and died. Any suggestions what can be done this time before winter starts here?
They didn’t return at all from the root? The ground temp could be too cold for extended periods of time. 1) a small greenhouse completely around the tree 2) a ditch/trench around small greenhouse to keep soil from touching outside ground level. 3) a few other things 4)know that your in a cold area and grow the heck out of thousands of trees now, in the summer, so that you have a stock for winter, allow them to be annuals. 5)replant many trees each year. +Kendrick

I thought Moringa had shallow roots but recently I found out that they have a deep tap root. 1. My concern is that I have a sewer line that is about 2-3’ to the right of the tree and it’s down about 8’. I don’t know how deep the tap root can go but I know they get little roots that go out from it too. 2. Last year the tree fell part of the way over and around the trunk I saw the root had made a circle around it. I don’t know if this is a problem or if it will make it weak. I’m in Florida and we get hurricanes. Would removing it completely be the best choice? Could I cut it down to about 4’ and make it a bush and is that even possible? I’d love it if you can give me your thoughts on this.

Trees typically ‘breath’ at the point roots turn to stems. I don’t really like to cover completely for an extended period of time but it could be an option for you if you’d like to see if it works, give it a try. Straw has a little more breathing capabilities if the stem is covered completely. I’m leaving these stumps exposed. +Kendrick
Seems like the cold water travels further into the core and damages the trunk even more if the thin branches are left on the tree over winter. +Kendrick

Thank you, the trunk may not come back, but the tree can regrow a new trunk from the roots. Wait to see. +Kendrick

The cutting back I understand, but the mulching and cover I’m not. Cover the whole stump with mulch or can part be exposed?
