Ilayaraja - it is not an individual's name. It is the other name for music.
Yet ilayaraja is a man like every one of us. Man is an imperfect creation. He is a social animal with many drawbacks. No one could be an exception to this rule in nature.
Yet, Ilayaraja has least imperfections in his individuality. They are his loud thinking, commands over & reprimands of others. They are all harmless.
Such so called imperfections only paved the way for his perfection in his music. He ignored his other imperfections & solely concentrated on perfecting his musical skill & gnana. In that sense we should all be thankful to his other imperfections.
The core point in his personality is missing in this video. He saw to it that he repaid his debt to all those who helped him on the way to enter into his musical journey in tamil film world.
He didn't forget any one. He helped all of them such as Panchu Arunachalam, Sangili murugan, Director Vasu, Prathap pothan etc...providing his musical score free of cost. This list is long & not complete.
All awards came to Ilayaraja on their own without asking for or expecting them. All such awards felt gratified after being bestowed upon him. The title Isaignani is the most apt title bestowed upon him.
Unlike ilayaraja, Vairamuthu though being a good poet is very much ordinary. Still he has to go a long way to comprehend the depth of tamil as Ilayaraja did comprehend music to its very core.
Vairamuthu was propped by a VIP in tamil nadu. He got many awards riding on the back of this VIP. All such awards were due to courtesy of that VIP.
Ilayaraja'a personal image is impeccable like mother's milk unlike Vairamuthu.
So,it is outrageous to talk about Ilayaraja's versatility in music along with Vairamuthu's poetic skill.
You can't compare or even talk about Himalayas along with a sand mound in a sea shore. It is a sort of anachronistic logic.

Sir, I don't believe you are giving complete facts, rather giving in bits and pieces - like reason for permanent split of Raaja from VM sounds very lame - Raaja has fought with many, but patched up eventually - SJ, SPB, Bhagyaraj, Bharathiraja, Mysskin to name a few. Unless we know the complete facts about their split, better not to spread incomplete info. Also about Gangai Amaran - he likes to brag about himself and his sons, which is ok - but he also loves to put Raaja down at every chance he gets, evident from many interviews. Raaja hasn't uttered one word against such hate mongering speeches. It would have been nice for readers if you quoted these as well.
Raaja's discipline inside and outside his work/studio is exemplary and he has raised his sons and daughter so well - whether they are successful professionally or not is a different debate, but at least they are not getting caught in drinking party cases involving physical fights nor spending all the wealth earned by one's parents, lavishly. It would be great if you could highlight these aspects of Raaja - as well as highlight how many movies he has done for either free or at a very low cost to help upcoming producers and directors. How many singers he has not only introduced, but also groomed by giving chances regularly - same goes with lyricists till today he works with unknown/newbie lyricists - we can talk about that too. And he is willing to give multiple alternate tunes if previous tunes not appealing to directors, he is not so rigid as you portrayed in all the occasions - of course if someone asked him about beep song or why Rahman got oscar & you didn't get it kind of questions, he will probably say get out.
Lastly, I remember Raaja has said many times - he never begged anyone for a chance - never had the habit of visiting producers/directors offices/houses asking for a chance - rather his brother Bhaskar did - I think he knew his worth right from start, he didn't need media to lift him up and he is not the type who would act in front of anyone to get favorable outcome. Rahman was favored by KB, Mani etal to put Raaja down, where as Raaja had to climb the huge mountain of overcoming the great MSV's/KVM's rule when he entered as music director. All these can be highlighted as well. Thanks.
