this is the best team trees video I’ve seen so far
@@mbainrot - The Gumpen Proletariat?
It's all downhill from here...
;- )
U FUNNY EVAN!
"a guy that travels the world telling sad stories about rocks" is the best description I've heard of this channel and I love it
And trees!
IKtheVS The opinions could all be construed in a way as stories
"You don't need to be perfect to be good" something I think we all need to realise
Some of us have 'bigger trees' to fry...
Actually the very definition of gods revolves around perfection. Gods are, or should I say were, the embodiment of perfection in the area they govern.
The idea was that in trying to reach the gods people would endeavor to perfect themselves in their day to day activities and strive to achieve a deeper understanding of their surrounding world.
I'm of course talking about the ancient religions of the Western, Middle-Eastern and Meso-American world which actually worshiped gods.
Japan is a different case, Shinto is an animist religion, the gods of Shintoism are more like nature spirits; more similar the elves of Germanic mythology than the gods of old.
@@martialme84 ah, oops. misread good as god.
@@martialme84 well yes and no.
You're thinking of the late period of Hellenistic faith, and this makes sense since it's this time that is closer to us and most accessible, but that wasn't always the case.
We know this because we have accounts of ancient Greek philosophers criticizing Homer of humanizing the and predicting that this would lead to the downfall of Hellenistic faith. And while this anthropomorphization gave us some really memorable stories and myths which in turn popularizing Greek mythology, it also brought the gods into the human sphere and nullifying their role as moral signposts.
You can think of it as the ancient version of the davinci code becoming part of canon scripture, and as impossible as that may seem in today's wold we have to keep in mind that the ancient world was a far different place. With little access to written knowledge most traditions would be passed on orally and subject to extreme degradation over just a few generations. And if you think about the Greek world as a bastion of culture imagine that by the times of Plato and Aristotle it had become difficult to impossible to find most works of Pythagoras and Thales.
That's comparable to being unable to find the writings of Descartes and Kant today.
I like how Evan always looks at the big picture.
It’s not about one day’s worth of trees. It’s about a shift in culture.
I love your take of a needed cynicism, if someone would do it, it had to be you. But humanity really surprises me every time with our sudden bursts of attitude. It's good to be surprised. Love from Brazil.
This was beautifully written
I believe I've watched every single youtube educator's video that's participated in this effort so far. And while it's great to do things like explain carbon sequestration to those unfamiliar with it, or get people excited about new technologies and possibilities for reforestation or whatever else related to the importance of trees, I still think I like this video best.
Here. in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in the last month with a post tropical storm and a Nor'Easter, we've lost about 24 Elm trees in our Kings Square and the Loyalist Burial Ground in the center of the city, most of these were over 130 years old, donated by the City of Boston after our Great Fire of 1888. Now it comes to light that in the Norse Sagas of Leif Erikson, when they explored from Newfoundland they came to the Bay of Fundy, because at Lance Meadows, they found Butternut wood, there are no Butternut trees in Newfoundland, but there are along the Bay of Fundy, along with wild grapes and the Sagas talk of huge tides like you get in the Bay of Fundy. So maybe to replace those trees lost in storms the city should plant the endangered Butternut trees, since the woodland companies are spraying to kill off trees like the Butternut so they can plant fir trees for lumber and paper products. Even 24 trees is a start.
@@TheCriminalViolin A lot of people have Butternuts in their backyards and have offered the seeds to start some more trees, but like I stated the forestry companies and the provincial power company have a spray program using Glyposate, that likes plants and poisons all animals in the forest, it's so back the deer have moved into the populated areas and are being culled this year.
Up the road here in the City of Stately Elms, there ain't many Elms to speak of, either. Plenty of deer though. He's right, deer are disappearing but because they're all massed around civilization they only places they can find ground cover), few people but the hunters and conservationists have taken any notice. The government and the media and even the local academia are fully-owned subsidiaries of JD Irving, Ltd. The previous government fired the Chief Health Officer when she spoke out.
It turns out all it took to defeat my cynicism about this project was a bigger, better cynic.
This is a perfect comment. Hurray for open-minded cynicists!
I farted just when he said not to, sorry.
"We are all of us in the gutter...some of us are looking at the stars."
OSCAR WILDE
Or as that other Irishman said
_"It's a tree ring circus
to be sure, to be sure..."_
I’ve planted quite a few trees here in the jungle, mostly mulberry, so the wildlife have something to forage on. It was surprising to see you’re in Nago, which is so close to where I live. Kanpai
The history of silviculture in Japan is quite interesting. Kinda disappointed he didn't go into the deforeststion crisis of the Edo period, and the reaction being the creation of a new industry, silviculture. As well as the societal change that led to sustainable forestry practices, centuries before the industrial era made it a much more obvious problen.
Good video nonetheless but that footnote of history would have been a great addition to the topic imo.
What is the saying - 'A good man plants a tree, under whose shade he will never sit'?

"This campaign is a seed but I hope it branches out. It is rooted in good, turning over new leaf."
Well played sir, well played!
My little hometown has a program where all elementary school students spend a couple of days planting trees in the local watershed. It's part of the science program and is wonderful. I did it over 50 years ago and my son did it 27 years later. I hope my grandchildren get to plant trees in the schools they attend now.
Yesterday I felt sad. Ended up buying a tree. Potted it up in a big pot outside my izakaya. It'll never be big enough to provide much shade, or nest space for birds, but it will make little satsumas, and I will eat them. It will suck up a little carbon dioxide. And it will make me smile.
It already has :)
I'm happy to see you join in on this project! I think it will do a lot of good; much more than what the trees do by themselves.
“The fart hating tree god of Okinawa” was an adult movie I was in back in the early nineties. 😏😏😏
I may be overly optimistic, but I hope this can be a change in culture from thinking “I can’t have any impact on the world” to “we can have an impact on the world.” It’s time for everyone to re-learn that collective action is a powerful tool, and while this may be a drop in the bucket alone, I think it could be part of the spark a very powerful shift.
The last 50 years was an explosion of individualism unseen in history. I think going forward we are going to remember that we still need community- and we can accomplish great things when we work together.
Glad you're part of Team Trees. Okinawa is beautiful. I like banyans
Those puns on the end card... Evan, whhhhyyyyy. I take my time to pause the video to read every one. Why must you punish me, lol.
To paraphrase G&S:
The pun is meant to fit the crime!
3:51 that thermodynamic pun :D
It's insane how high the quality of these videos are. The script, the scenery, the message, the story. Recently I found out that you are Chris Hadfield's son too, so I think it's pretty cool that I loved your channel for you, even before knowing that you were also related to a big celebrity. Thank you for all the hours you've kept me entertained and in a state of contemplation and good luck, because I hope this channel becomes a lot bigger than it already is.
We're glad you wrote that fart joke and you are hilarious.
You mean it wasn’t a real concept in the town there??
This is probably the best video on the TeamTrees thingie.
This is the ONE video I share, thanks Evan - and I come just from watching your "Grave of the Fireflies" - vid, so it's good to hear something upbeat.
by far the best writting i've seen on yt, your scripts are always extremely good
This really touched me and made me cry and I don't know why. Thank you for making these wonderful videos and helping me have new perspectives of life and the world we live in.
This take on it is why I love you so much. Best CZcams channel by far!
Love how you say it as it is, which got my attention and makes me want to participate
Rare Earth: So let’s talk trees
Trees: Yo waddup
You could consider using Ecosia. It is a search engine that uses 80% of their surplus for tree planting. As of this date (27th November 2019) they planted over 72 million trees.
It's actually started by my wife's friend. I just can't bring myself to use Bing.
You expressed so well what I was thinking, and told me just what I needed to hear
Thank You
Nago is the name of Boar God in Princess Mononoke. Always love your videos.
Been bingeing your channel lmao fan from Singapore don't stop what you do :)
Out of all the team trees videos, this is the one I watch.
This is possibly the most incredible and memorable video on all of CZcams.
One of the very few people I admire here in youtube. The writing is so profound that I was inspired to create something out of the chaos in my life.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you brother, you are a great encouragement and a blessing to us all who hear you. Peace.
Been there. Oki is fertile ground for MANY, MANY episodes. Many islanders are still alive who will give personal accounts of their experiences of WWII. Some will not speak of it. Visit Ie Shima where War Correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed in April 1945. Many thousands from both sides were slaughtered in the taking of Okinawa. Habu fights are interesting. Touch on the vast commercialization within a stones throw of the prolific tombs. Be sure to scuba dive or at least snorkel while you are there. Hope this finds you before you've left that semi-tropical paradise.
I've been watching Rare Earth for about 2 years at this point, but until yesterday I hadn't heard of this MrBeast guy. I guess I'm an old man now that I'm past 30, but the fire of optimism is not yet entirely quenched in me. Thanks for keeping it real and... _rock on_
i love your videos, but this one, is just too good, thanks for this
This is it, you hit the nail on the head. It's not about roots in the ground, it's about the attitude of millions.
When I clicked on a video about a deity with an aversion to flatulence didn't expect to catch some actual feels
All the trees in my county, the wine county of California, are burning at the moment. Vineyards, forest and parks have being lost over the past couple nights.
Edit: and now I am having to evacuate my home.
Despite this particular fire being suspected of starting from arson hopefully the team trees movement can will people into combating climate change, but really we all need to answer the call to help prevent wild devastations to our neighbors. Make that one day that wouldn't have happened otherwise happen.

"Always research what you see on CZcams. Don't let anyone think for you; most people can barely think for themselves." Yeah, get your facts right. Love from Brazil.
Next time, take your shadow with you everywhere! I would like to see France from your perspective, with an english bank sponsoring, truly good content.
Best promotion video for this movement as of yet.
Just this morning I listened to Gabriel Urbina’s “Zero Hours” podcast, episode 7 where he had his two characters wax eloquently about exactly this idea of constructing behavior as the flip side of destructive behavior, that both are needed. I would say more but I don’t want to spoil “Zero Hours” for you, you need to listen for yourself (it’s worth it)
Informative and profound, as always. Extremely eloquent,
@6m woman hugging tree was amazing touch of subliminal message. Love your channel.
Dammit, Evan, I can't even explain why, but this video made me cry like a baby. It's one of the most beautiful things I've seen on this site.
If I lean into the leather couch I can duet with my bro Maui on ukelele and using the ancient art of reverberation use flatulence to harmonize the chorus of over the rainbow
Math: There are reportedly about three trillion trees on Earth. Typically, they live longer than 10 years and less than 1000 years, so let's say that a typical tree lives for about 100 years. So the daily turnover has to be about 3 trillion divided by 100 years (36500 days) = 80 million trees per day. That's about 80 million old tress dying, and about 80 million new trees starting out, every day. So planting 20 million trees is what nature does before you've woken up in the morning. And if humans are cutting down 20M trees per day, another 60M trees per day are falling over and rotting (which may be a very good thing, diversity versus methane). All numbers are approximate.
I took a bag of acorns and tossed them around our (multi-acre) yard. About 300 trees in 30 minutes. Another bag of acorns is waiting.
300 acorns =/= 300 trees though
By your math the forest should be growing- not shrinking. I think you vastly underestimate the life cycle time of the northern boreal forests.
We can see clearly from satellite images that the forests are shrinking. Not to mention less breeding trees = less new trees. You might want to study population ecology a little more
This channel doesn’t always hit the bullseye, but this video’s thoughtful introspection busted the target apart.
Love the videos and interesting to see you revisiting Japan, but curious as to why you decided to use random shots of Angkor Wat for this?
Have you indeed returned to Japan, or is this old footage?
Either way, love your work!
This video I made on the fly, and didn't have a lot of tree footage from Okinawa. So I improvised with previous footage we shot elsewhere, in Cambodia, Newfoundland, etc.
I csnt get enough of this team tree content man. I've been binging this stuff for a day now. I've watched so many that I forgot about the entire thing, and I honestly didn't even think about the possibility of this video being a #teamtree one. Like, too many youtubers are doing this, wow.
I love your work... Thanks for making the world a better place
Was hoping there'd be a photoshopped Kijimuna scurrying away in the background at 7:30
I hope you guys did some scuba diving there. I spent time there in the 90s and that was the most fun i had there.
I love the idea of a fart god.
if you’re young at heart you can see
the boy-god in the tree
This isn't about a lonely rock. Who are you and what have you done with the real Evan?
rare earth needs over 1 million subs
I must be out of touch. I had (have) no idea who Mr. Beast is.
I have no idea who any of the people mentioned are, and tbh I don't care, don't need them to tell me we are up shit creek without a paddle, nor that planting trees is good. Trees are cool anyway.
Its also easy to forget that Japan has locked up a big chunk of it's land for conservation - these acts of foresight that get little recognition but make a huge difference downstream.
I didnt came here expecting to tear up, damnit
Yeah, me neither. I came here for my weekly dose of existential dread, not a rollercoaster of cynicism turning into deep optimistic hope.

Amazing video essay😍😍
I JUST farted like... thirty seconds ago, lol
This might not have been the first #teamtrees video I've seen, but it is the best scripted and most thought provoking.
Indeed. I got a feeling many of the videos ended up a bit rushed, sadly. But this one was just as high quality as any regular Rare Earth video.

The world needs more trees.
I live in a country that's 70 % forest and I still think we need more trees!
Just wondering, have you heard of 'Towers of silence', or Dakhma of the Zoroastrian religeon? Particually the one in mumbai, and what affect the heavily decreasing vulture population? Somthing intresting I thought I'd put out there.
Is that footage of the Okunoin Cemetery in Koyasan at 4:04?
Yes
Does someone know which bird is singing all along the video? (Weirdly specific question, i know)
Amazing video keep at it!
My first college roomate was a micronesian whose home atoll island was near an even older smaller one with a sacred banyan tree that got very angry if touched by anyone, making the sea come violently to life all round the island. The tree is growing out of a very old stone house.
Religious missionary zealots would come and claim that in the name of Jesus they command the spirit to mind its manners.
All to this day have come back with their tails tweenst their hindquarters I was assured. Doubt i will ever get the chance to take him up on showing the place to me.
Just wanted to point out that most of the trees cut down are from tree farms, which then plant trees so they can harvest them some years later. So yeah the lumber companies are doing both destruction and creation.

This content is empowering! Awaken to our potential and feed the soul! 20 million trees to plant, because we can!
what i wanted to be the end/after the credits joke is for chris to stand under that tree and just letting it rip 😁😁😁
A beer factory? That sounds awful. You could have called it a brewery.
thank you evan
It's nice that my country has an entire day each year dedicated to trees and we learn about in from primary school. Everyone goes out and plants something. More countries need such a day
Thanks for promoting #teamtrees!
I came for the fart hating god, I left with a tear rolling down my face and a need to plant trees 🌲❤️ P.S I got the call back 😝
This video is amazing! I lived on Okinawa for 2 years but I never really heard about this banyan tree or fart hating god although I have seen this the picture. I wonder what the shrine/temple is called during 3:00-4:27. This video brought back so many good memories of living there though. Thank you for making this I'm going to go donate to teamtrees.org.
That temple is Angkor Wat, in Cambodia.
Quick guys! We need to boost ratings on trees as well as rocks now! XD Maybe go plant a few trees or get them read for transplanting after winter for some of us.

What a blessing it is for Mr. Beast and all the creators rallying under his cause to allow us broke regular joes a chance to make such a difference in the world for so little. I may be broke but even I know 1 tree is more valuable than me. Dropping a fiver for 5 trees is a no brainer!
Fun fact: Indians plant 220 million trees every day
I'm so glad you guys are involved in this
