- When you’re talking to someone as immensely talented and accomplished as Christine Baranski, it’s hard not to assume she always operates with the utmost confidence. After all, we’re talking about someone with one Emmy win, 14 Emmy nominations, three SAG awards and two Tonys amongst many other accolades. But, Collider Ladies Night gives us the chance to look back on the most pivotal stages of honing ones craft and career aspirations and for Baranski, that meant discussing one of the scariest decisions she’s ever made - committing to a TV show.
January 1995 marked the beginning of Baranski’s first long run on a show with the premiere of Cybill. Cybill Shepard starred as the title character, a struggling, aging actor, with the show following her from gig to gig. Baranski stepped in as Cybill’s best friend, Maryann Thorpe, who hit the jackpot courtesy of a divorce settlement and very much enjoys living large.
The show ran for four seasons and scored Baranski that Emmy win, but it turns out, Baranski was hesitant to commit to the show initially. Find out why in this clip from Baranski's edition of Collider Ladies Night!

my absolute favorite actress, Christine is so professional and so talented that it only makes me love her more and more
I “fell off my chair” many times doubled over in laughter watching that brilliant show! ❤️⭐️
Christine is one of the greatest actress! I absolutely adore her in everything she comes out in! ❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻❤️
Love you Christine!
The best get yet for Ladies Night. Can't wait for full episode with Perri & Christine together.
I was a young lady in the 90's when the Cybill show was on, and I LOVED Christine for her character! I looked up to her so much! She was just so smooth, acerbic, witty, cool, calm, collected empowered, independent, and generally unbothered. A big time roll model. 🥰
I was a little girl when Cybill Shepherd was on Moonlighting with Bruce Willis in the 80's. I loved that show, too. But Bruce got to be the cool, calm witty irresponsible one, while Cybill played the typical high strung, nagging woman.
I liked how the women on the Cybill show got to be unbothered, sometimes even irresponsible, cool cats, too.😎
(But I understand why women of the 70's and 80's were the way they were. They had to lay down the law with those old school Neanderthal men.)
My goodness! I remember seeing Christine in the movie The Ref; she hasn't aged a day since!!
I think she looks so much better now!
@@pamelamccall5653 she clearly has found the fountain of youth; I'll take two of whatever she's having 😁
Christine can do anything! But my favorite Baranski Moment is the beach number in Mamma Mia.
Heard Cybil was difficult at times. Watched the show because of Christine. Mary Ann Thorpe was the funniest character on the show.
MARY ANN THORPE........WONDERFOUL. 2021
She shared her "fear" of TV roles with Bebe Neuwirth, when she was offered the role of Lilith for "Cheers". :)
I simply cant imagine anyone else being able to fill the expensive shoes of "Maryann Thorpe" especially while exacting hilarious revenge on "Dr. Dick".
Megan Mulally could have, as it practically the same character as hers, which is also a copy of any Elaine Stritch character, who was an exaggeration of an Eve Arden character, etc.
@@nonenoneonenonenone Megan Mullaly would have been too young, and Elaine Stritch and Eve Arden...well, a little too old at that time :) The point is that in 1995 they made a brilliant casting decision with Christina Baranski. But perhaps you aren't a fan.....
This is where I first fell in love with her
Charisma out of every pore
The Grinch 👍
I love Christine Baranski...she is the BEST at playing snobby, WASP-ish characters.
New York "actors" are such snobs about LA and television. It secured her stardom. I think it took Christine Ebersole longer, till she finally had a starring role in a musical.
She was awesome on "Frasier" as ultra-conservative ultra-religious radio talkshow host. Delightful evil. ;)
