  • The Rubicon Trail is a famous 4X4 route. I decided to try it out on my bike. It might not have been the smartest idea. But, it was challenging and (mostly) fun. Check it out! Aerial shots with Skydio R1

    Surly Ice Cream Truck ordered. T -3 weeks to go! Type 2+ fun incoming...
    My friends are dirtbiking the Rubicon. I'm between motos and not really in the market yet, so when this idea struck me, the choice was clear! Thanks for steering me toward a fat bike, I think I'll be glad to be steamrolling the big stuff that would eat a 2½" tire! 🚲

      Survived! Logistics worked out that I only did Loon to Spider and back, with a side trip out-and-back to Wentworth Springs. My dirtbiking friends caught me just 1mi from the end having skipped Wentworth! The best of them had a reasonable day, and the less skilled had a much harder time than me. 15mi on the Rubicon + 8mi on road to and from Loon Lake Campground. Would like to try it again once I develop some MTB skill, and a bit more fitness. Cramping up pretty bad by the halfway point! This was my first actual MTB trip. The Surly was a great choice on 5½-6psi. No mechanicals, only a few falls and scraped shins.

    Great video!
    Back in the early 90s on a hardtail I went with a buddy from Homewood. I know it was great but I've forgotten so much.
    I do remember the Slab hillside and playing in it..
    I need to Relive it again!!!

    Is the trail fun on a bike? I've heard that past Blackwood Canyon it isn't. And how easy is it to follow?

      Well...fun is relative ;) I think the granite sections are super fun. But you can access them easier from Loon, the west side of Rubicon and do it as an out and back if you just want to ride the granite. I think the video does a decent job of showing the challenging parts. Though, there's a lot that aren't in the video including Cadillac hill. Be prepared to hike-a-bike a bit, and I'd avoid it on weekends/holiday periods when there are lots of Jeeps out there.

      Thanks!! But, I don' thing folks on Jeeps need to worry about the Rubicon getting crowded with bikes. It's a lot of effort versus other rides. I've only been back once since that video and didn't do the point to point the most recent time, but only the first half and then a bail out option that takes you back to the start - still was a lot of work!

      @@ACwithFT Ya, but you showed that it can be done. After you did it with no assist, I have to assume with the new pedal assist Ebikes, the rest of us mortals can do this. I think you are ushering in a new group to the Rubicon. I swear, a mountain bike would be a much better experience than riding in a Jeep. I have a Jeep and a MTB. The MTB is alway more fun.

      @@jlt7438 I'm definitely not the first...I think Hans Rey may have been the first back in the late 80s? Not positive on that. But, yeah, e-bikes open it up quite a bit more. I'd be a little nervous about something going wrong (motor/battery) somewhere in the middle of the ride and then having a heavy bike to push up the hills, but overall, I think they'd make it a lot less work and keep the fun level more toward type 1 than type 2 ;)

      @@ACwithFT Thanks for your insight. Whenever I ride the Flume trail on the other side of Tahoe my mind has been on that Rubicon. I think this year I will try it too.

      @ACwithFT  Před 4 lety

      I love riding granite and have hit a couple of zones this season, but not sure about doing another shoot/edit from this zone. I think out there, I just want to have fun the next time - maybe take a few photos, but not have the extra weight from all the gear ;)

      @@ACwithFT i hear ya!!! static shots would be hard to do wanting to move and play. my setup with the leader having a seatpost cam, an the follower having a chesty, worked pretty well with only stopping to change batteries. has Pat Smage been here? that would be fun to watch!

      @ACwithFT  Před 4 lety

      @@thunderdogproductions Yeah, in addition to having to set-up and break-down, carrying tripods, bodies with multiples lenses and a pretty large drone on my back for that whole ride was an additional workout that I really didn't need ;) Something with just GoPros would be fun for sure though
