There was a time in my life when I thought Flying V's were silly hair-metal guitars. Then I picked one up to play it... and I wound up trading in two of my other guitars to buy it because I loved it so much. One of the best guitars I ever owned.
Jimi was the first hair metal god then lol
That sound instantly takes me back to the 70s and bands like The Faces...Absolutely wonderful sound.
I've had one of these since 2009 and I LOVE it so much. Just a phenomenal workhorse of a guitar. So cool to see one in Ben's hands.
My only problem is that I really really want to keep almost every cool guitar we get through here, this one was one of those for sure!
Love the. Fretboard work…can’t get enough of the beautiful finish product.
Mine is a 2003, the first year of production I believe...I had no idea they were so... Desirable...
Excellent work and video...
I started playing guitar in college and when I first started looking at electric guitars I remember they had one of the 2002 SG Faded with the ebony fretboard and crescent moon inlays in the shop. For years I remembered loving that guitar. I recently saw that exact guitar come up on reverb so I bought it. (It's definitely the same one) That guitar just has a thing to it.
My understanding is that Gibson cancelled the production of a gothic line so the ebony fretboards with crescent inlays were being used up on the initial production of the faded guitars. They're super cool and all of the ones I played were really great.
I’ve had that same guitar since 2004 (May of 03 serial #) and it’s still my #1 to this day. It’s a great guitar.
The Crescent Moon is a historic Gibson inlay! It used to be on the headstock of their earliest instruments!
That I didn't know, thank you! One of the main reasons I started looking at other peoples guitars was to learn more so that I can improve on my own builds, and let me tell you, it is working! Every day is a school day right now!
@Crimson Custom Guitars the moon and star was the actual headstock logo on early Gibson mandolins from the 20s and it was said orville Gibson liked the Turkish design and used it in the early stuff Inc guitars ( it was the headstock logo not a fretboard inlay ) give it a Google Ben it takes you down a reddit rabbit hole lol
@@stu-j Is there an echo in here?
@@stu-j. "The Moon and Stars" is a JD Weatherspoon pub, near Romford Station, Essex, RM1.
Liking this trio of Ben, Josh and Sophia with these tear downs. Seems to work well.
I couldn't agree more, I'm really enjoying the direction the channel is taking now
I have the SG version of this, although mine has an ebony fretboard and an ABR-1. Same crescent moon inlays and in faded cherry. It's my #1 go-to guitar. Bought it new in 2002.
epic guitars, both... um, channelling Yoda, I am
Is Trogly now ranting at the screen because you added non-factory-original shielding paint? 🤔🤣
lol. if he watches what we are doing I would be honoured at a light rant lol. I am a huge fan of his work
2006 Faded series V and SG got the 🌙 inlays.
Probably not, it’s not a Les Paul from the 70’s and too low end for his champagne tastes.😂
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars I loved it when he superglued the nut on an early '60s SG and got squeeze-out on the headstock face. A real pro.
The bridge inserts are installed before the paint and the pick up poles line up perfect to the strings, no need to correct, cheers
I used to have one of these! Between this V and the Pro T one, they were without a doubt the lightest guitars I have ever picked up.
the weight was very surprising indeed
I built one of these once - complete with a trem and Jimi Hendrix paint job - sold it to get on with the next build but it was a killer guitar wish I had kept it.
Even though that song came out about the time I was born, I still love it.
Hi Ben, I live in Thailand, and the lemon oil here is produced by boiling Lemmon Grass, and then skimming off the resultant oil. It smells vcery pleasant (Lemony) but doesn't contain any citric acid i.e.it's non-corosive and works wonders on your fretboard.
I have a Flying V faded from the same period (2005) which is built more or less the same way (with dot inlays). Those cavity routes are big enough that you can drop P90s in them, which is what I did. Obviously the original pickguard won't work. I fabricated and painted a temporary one out of some thick card stock with the plan to order a manufactured plastic one off the internet... but the temporary pickguard ended up being reliable and looked fine, so I kept it. I play this guitar pretty much every day, so the wear on the pickguard more or less matches the wear on the rest of the guitar and it would look goofy without it.
I did replace the truss rod cover, though. The giant one with the Gibson logo is a royal pain to remove when making adjustments. So I removed it, plugged the screw holes, and installed a "standard" Gibson two-screw cover. The added benefit of this is it will piss off the corksniffers. I was going to put an Ibanez logo on the peghead just to piss them off more, but never got around to it.
That is cool indeed
I have one of these but I think it's a transition piece, I believe they went from an Ebony board and Crescent Moon inlays to a Rosewood board with dot inlays....mine is a Ebony board with dot inlays...also from 2003
The Crimson Gang, make it look easy. 😎 I could never watch enough fretwork videos! Does anyone know what pickups they put in V's? They always sound massive to me 👍
I knew this guitar was coming soon. Here it is.
After hearing Josh's first two chords I honestly thought it was going to continue with the lyrics: "You disobeyed my orders, son. Why were you ever born..." :D :D
I remember when these came out and a guitar store employee called the inlay a "toe nail clipping". Didn't mind I until I heard that. Now I can't unsee it. Sorry if I ruined it for anybody else 😆
Ah, the cheapo Faded series V, they had the moon inlays in the beginning and later went over to the common dot markers. I tested one in the store when they came out but it had so bad fret sprout that i felt it in my hand the whole day after just playing a couple of minutes so i never bought one. Its probably alright when fixed and setup but that was obvoiusly not the case at the store. Im a V player but i play Dean V´s now since many years.
I've never been a fan of the flying V guitar design but it looks okay. I like the more transparent finish or warn finish on the back of the neck. For me if the color was less opaque I think it would look better. more of a transparent or at lest semi transparent tent or stain instead of what is on the guitar. I like seeing the wood grain for myself. The guitar does sound pretty good as well. I do like the crescent Moon inlays. Maybe if they had started out with a smaller inlay and maybe slightly thicker inlay material and were able to go further down the neck it would have worked better.
Thanks
If i won this, I'd swap the pickups and the cheap ceramic capacitor for some proper stuff. Gibson T-top in the neck position, Gibson Dirty Fingers in the bridge position and a proper orange drop capacitor.
Gotta have those late 70's/early 80's metal tones \m/
Lemon Oil falls in the same category as WD40: it is more a cleaner than a lubricant. It would be ok for cleaning off the grime, but you have to use some penetrating oil afterwards. I keep using Ballistol...it keeps riflestocks in good condition since the Kaiserreich.
Which is better - shielding paint or copper tape?
I'd love a V with the moon inlays like that! Except with a set of hot P90s done in the style of the ones on the new Iommi signature SG.
oh now, there's an idea!
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Do it! You know you want to.
I call DIBS before even watching this video. That would go great next to my GGBO 22 Explorer and my 86 Washburn RR11v!! Are those Crimson shirts at the 18:17 mark Sophia is wearing available? Josh needed to rip some KK Downing riffs for that demo. It just doesnt sound right with happy 70's style music to my ears 🤣
a question, volute mainly for those back angled headstock like gibson les pual, just give it little bit strength, but for like fender style headstock not really need volute or not pointed to add a volute..?
Not true. In a fender neck the grain are all in line from the neck to the headstock creating a strong neck. The way a gibson neck is made the wood grains around the nut area are very short creating a really weak spot easy to break. A volute on a gibson neck really reinforce a weak area.
volutes are not really needed for Fender style headstocks.. all angled headstocks should have one though imo
Did anyone else here feel like they were being pulled through a vortex into the Wampler Chasing Tone Podcast when that music cued up? Lol.
I have the gothic moon star inlay tattoo’d on my leg
Always fancied a V so headed straight across to the Giveaway site ... but it's not there 😥
I will let them know. DC
Hi. The glitch on the giveaway site has been remedied and you can now buy a ticket.
DC
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Tickets bought :)
Ben you need to sell them Crimson branded Scruffs work jackets....
Was that "Bohemian like you" or something from Slade, or am I way off?
Though it's humbuckers with no coil tap, do you still need shielding?
Always. Some places laden with nearby electrical equipment can cause interference with almost anything that is inadequately shielded. It isn't common but one theatre I worked in is notorious for it; every time someone uses the elevator there is tons of electrical noise throughout the stage area.
as @fire angel says, it is always a good idea to shield.. we struggle in this studio due to the solar panel boxes in the cupboard, soldering irons etc
Ahh okay ja that makes sense 👍.
My inner 12 year-old couldn't hear 'back cavity' without giggling 🤭
I'm thinking that whoever did the shielding on that guitar probably did it on a Friday afternoon.....
indeed.. the definition of a slapdash job!
How’s the Dorset Guitar Museum Charity kitty growing?
Growing? I've spent far more than we've made so far.. I can't seem to control myself! 😕 but.. and this is important, the museum groweth! 😆
I can't make an account on the site for some reason, or rather it's like I'm "logged in" but in limbo because no password ever arrives, and it seemed like the support message thing was unresponsive (as in the button didn't send the typed out message, not as in a response taking a while which would be understandable)
Is this for the Give Away site? If so please email guild@crimsonguitars.com and we will try and sort it out. If it is for Crimson email shop@crimsonguitars.com. Thanks DC
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Oh yeah I should have specified, giveaway indeed. Gonna give it another go and if it doesn't work send an email, thanks!
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Seems like a password reset did the trick 👍
Did anyone else notice that around the 12:26 mark, Ben removed the nut from the jack with the scratchplate installed with the screws, then when he tightened the nut for the jack, the screws were taken out again and the scratchplate was loose??? A little deceptive editing or a blooper??? LOL!!!
Does the Great Guitar Giveaway website have issues with hotmail email addresses? I was able to create an account and get the free entry for the Les Paul, but I never received an email to create a password. I have requested a password reset the last 3 days to no avail. I also sent a message via the contact form on the website without a response. I'd love to have a chance on a few of these guitars and help out with the museum. Also I'm really a bass player, perhaps a few basses could make an appearance on the site. Cheers
Hi. Would you please email guild@crimsonguitars.com and let us know the email address that you used to register so we can try and sort this out for you. DC
No Video without (i assume) Bens Samsung ringing :D
Got it in one.. my bad
I keep thinking it's my phone in another room, until I realise I'm holding my phone watching this...
Snot colored tuners are the best looking ones!
lol
👍
Never been a fan of the flying v tbh. Only thing I really like is the headstock shape
they are, and always have been, a polarising guitar, which is fine.. I do agree though, no matter who you are you have to love the headstock!
WANT! In a left-handed version please. Anyone? No? Damn.
we would happily build you one though
you cannot sit down and play this guitar for very long. It just will not stay on your lap because of the shape. It also does not like to stay in conventional guitar stands.. it also does not hang around your neck when you’re standing in the correct position all the time for some players.. the most successful single thing about this guitar is, we’re talking about it right now..Like they say, there’s no such thing as bad publicity
That's an individual thing. Some people have no trouble with the shape and play a V most or all of the time. I have no idea if I would be OK with it but I always disliked the look of it anyway.
I don't like the look. I don't like the colour. I don't like the sound.
What was that other "I don't" that I need to mention?
Oh yes, I remember. "I don't have a brain"... 🤣😂🤣 (I love it really).
I've always been underwhelmed by the quality of Gibson Vs... Maybe just my misfortune, but the ones I played or owned were horrible.
An '85 XPL-V (Explorer headstock, now back in vogue on the Dave Mustaine model) was actually a body made of no less than 5 mismatched pieces of mahogany, slathered with a thick PU lacquer. Dreadful instrument, dead as a doornail, practically couldn't give it away & finally sold it dirt-cheap.
I have various other Vs, including Epiphones, and they are definitely superior in playability, sound and versatility.
I honestly wish you would post more guitar building videos and less of those teardowns.
Strange few weeks with my ggbo build in progress, but once everything settles there will be at least 2 build videos a week.. hopefully more as Josh and Sophia come fully on stream.. please bear with us 🙏
The way the scratchplate sides aren't parallel with the sides of the guitar is just lazy, the shielding paint, the lazy inlays, the overall dont GAF fit and finish is why Gibson is a garbage brand now. What did this sell for new? They still get 1400 USD used as of today so there should be no "beginner" or "bargain" Gibsons. Epiphone is supposed to be that niche but yet my Korina 7 string is built better.
No offense meant but all that work and it sounded like rubbish. Just saying
