Art - is there a reason why you didn't replace the pinion seal that mates with the driveshaft? Need to do this job again, second time since 2017 on my E39 M5... slinging fluid onto my exhaust pipes.

Yes, simply that it wasn't leaking and showed no signs of wear, although one could argue, "while you're in there..." you should've done it.
