I used to work in my college bookstore. One night a last minute troll came in, but the door was already locked (deadbolt and ground lock), and the lights at the front of the store were closed. We only left on enough lights to clean. He tries the door and it doesn't budge. Tries again, same. He keeps trying, pulling harder and harder. He finally breaks the locks on the door and flings it open... then steps in and says to the nearest person, "Are you guys still open?" This was 20 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Friend of mine worked at a store where her name tag clearly said her name but her Manager never called her the right name. Mind you there was another girl with the same name but spelled differently and went by a nickname. I tell you this because once my friends paycheck was late because the manager forgot to give it to my friend because they had already given one out to the person with that name and when looking it up, mind you again working there for 3 months, called her by the other girls last name, but at last got her check. She called the big boss and a three weeks later the manger was fired. She left a month later cause the new manager did nothing.

When I was managing a DQ most of my workers were high school kids and once in a while you would have adults who would come in and scream at them for nonsense. One time I had a family come in and the dad was an asshole I took their food to their table and told him that in about a year or two his daughter that was with them would probably be working in a place like this and how would he like to have someone pull the same shit on her that he did to my kids that shut him down real quick. The other deal was when college guys would be hitting up the girls that were working there I had that happen one day and got rid of them only to get a call from one of them wanting to talk to the blonde I asked him what he wanted with my 15 year old daughter guy hangs up immediately 😂

One of my favorites is the "I'm never shopping here again!" That's after acting like a spoiled child and causing a huge scene over some situation they've created. They say it like its suppose to hurt you personally. In reality the only pain for you and anyone else unfortunate enough to witness the outburst is seeing a grown man or woman act like that. You think to yourself "You never coming here again is the best gift you could give us". But to everyone's horror there they are the following week (sometimes day) with some new drama. Which leads into my other favorite.
"Every time I come here, I have a problem!". You look around at all the other people happily shopping, chatting, and also being helped and you think to yourself a couple things.
    1. "Are you some sort of masochist? Why in the world do you keep coming back for more if it's such a distressing challenge for you?"
    2. "Is the universe out to get you? There are at least 100 people shopping here. How is it possible that the instant YOU walk in everything conspires to ruin just YOUR shopping experience while everyone else is perfectly fine?"
And when there is a spouse who's been brought along for the crap show, they are usually mortified at their significant other's behavior. There is a certain look in their eyes. The sort of look you'd expect from someone who's subtly trying to ask you for help while not tipping off their abductor. You almost want to give them a hug and wish them luck as they are dragged back to the pits of despair. Maybe they are masochist too.
    Retail is a trip.

So I work at a gun store and we sell big gun safes. The ones that are literally impossible to break into. So we're getting ready to close and this guy walks in before we got a chance to lock the door and heads straight to the safes. He says he wanted to buy it and take it home. We said he can purchase the safe but we did have enough employees to lift the safe that and the employees who were there were older and in no condition to lift a 700 pound safe. He started getting pissed off saying stuff like " I drove an hour to get here and I'm going to go home with it". After saying no multiple times he ran to the parking lot and convinced a couple of people to lift the safe into his truck. I didn't see exactly how they lifted the safe but some how they got it so the safe was standing straight up rather than on its side. So if this guy breaks hard while driving (or at all) the safe will most likely fall over. So we told asked him what he's going to do if it falls over and he goes " I'll just bring it back and return it". For those of you who worked in retail you probably know how well that's going to go.

And the Last Minute Troll. I had a lady come in 5 minutes before closing that wanted a full matching business suit to wear the next day . She was there 45 minutes after we closed and didn't buy anything D-:

I see a lot of people complaining about customers in retail. Try food. Take every dumb and rude customer in retail and now make them hungry and drop their blood sugar levels. Try dealing with the logic that comes out of a hungry, cranky customer, that in their eyes your keeping them from sustaining a basic human need. Not saying retail is easy by any means. But holy crap, the stuff said to me while working at restaurants. I've done both btw, so again retail is not a walk in the park by any means.

Free French fry scammers are really a thing. Some people make tricking restaurants into giving them more food than they pay for their hobby. The all you can eat crab night at red lobster on Tuesday’s regularly brought in a fat guy in a trench coat who stuffed crab legs in it to take home after hours of ordering and eating. Alternating between his stomach and pockets. Like feeding two people over a period of hours. And there’s nothing you can do about it except smile and let your manager know about it who will ask it to leave or allow it. Bleh.

    1. The only dislikes on this video are from people who never worked a day in retail in their life and think the video is an exageration. It's not!
    2. I had a customer flat out yell at me, which caught me off guard and almost brought me to tears, about a month ago for basicly not being psychic. All because I send his items down the end of the checkout lane so he could bag them as where I work the customers bag their own stuff. The reason he was mad? Well I sent it down to the end instead of just handing him his four items. The whole time before he flew off the handle at me, he said nothing. He didn't even answer when I asked if he found everything okay. Just magicly I was supposed to know he wasn't going to bag his items and just carry them out, and that instead of him picking them up, I was supposed to hand them to him.
    3. When I worked at Walmart I also dislike the customers who bring in their own shopping bags, but never wash the bags. I don't mind the reusable if they are clean as they hold a lot more stuff, and if they want to to load it up, even better. What I don't like are the bags that smell like they have never been washed, smell like cigarettes, have bugs in them(had that happen once), or the worst, bags that smell like cat piss! But yet I am expected to touch that bag and load food into it! Gross! The ONLY place that bag should be going is the garbage! But no, you want your food put in it!
    4. The oh looks like it's free! In response to an item that I am having a hard time scanning. My thoughts, dude, I am already frustrated, please do not agrivate that with the "It must be free!" line, you know as well as I do that it is not free! So stop using that stupid line!
    5. The Customer is Always right. Bull!
    6. Customers who blame someone else for something they did. True story, when I was working at, yet another Walmart I saw this lady get mad at her son and throw a ball at him. She missed him and hit instead a glass blender that was on display knocking it off the shelf. When she saw me she immediatly said "Oh it was my son! He was playing with the ball and broke that! I told him not to!" And I was thinking "Great, so not only are you teaching your son that he can throw things while angry/annoyed, but, that he should lie as well. Super!"
And for me, quite possibly the most annoying is the customer below:
    7. EBT customers, not all. I am talking about those who do not know what a calculator is...seriously. The customers who end up putting the most items back are those on EBT. Why? Because they cannot be bothered to keep a tally as they shop. I even suggested to someone who decided to put back almost $100 worth of meat that they use a calculator to make it easier for them, and their response was "I don't have one." My thoughts "You don't have one? You have a phone in your left hand and you don't have a calculator?" ALL cell phones have a calculator! And whats more is, when you are using an EBT card you don't pay taxes on any of the food so all you have to do is add it up as you go! No multiplication, no division, just adding! You don't even have to use subtraction unless you decide you would rather have item B instead of item A which was already added into the total. Point is, you will end up saving yourself, and the cashier, and quite possibly the front end manager some time by just using basic math. ....It also helps if you know how much you have on your EBT card prior to shopping. Customer Service or a cashier who is not helping anyone at the moment can get that for you, all you have to do is ask.

The door at the top of the stairs was closed over, and me and my colleague are clearly getting ready to leave, turning lights off, getting our coats and bags etc. It very clearly states the shop closes at 5:30 on the door, and at this point it was like 5:35 or something. This woman pushes this extremely heavy door open. I am stood at the top of the steps telling her repeatedly that we are closed. After telling her this about 5 times, she turns to me and says, "Are you still open?" I have never been more tempted by homicide in my life.

Some customers in retail can make your life a living hell but sometimes you can get some sweet revenge , I once had a indian college student buy a pair of high end speakers for 4500 dollars and I knew he was just going to use them for a party and return them, we had a 14 day money back guarantee, sure enough 13 days later he was back for a refund ,I was professional and thanked him for his business and refunded his money. Well around a week later here he comes again and this time he tells me he cant decide which one pair of speakers would sound better in his apartment and that he would like to take both home to decide which pair he wants to keep, one of these pairs were filled with lead shot in the sidewalls and weighed over 200 pounds each I had to box them up and it killed my back,i then had to put them in a cab for him, as I put the speakers into the cab I told him that if he thought he was going to use them for a party like the last time he was going to be sorry, of course he denied it and said he was going to keep one pair. Sure enough 13 days later he brings both pairs back for a refund of over 13000 dollars I told him I had to check to make sure hey were complete and no problem, I took them behind the counter and took a piece of Styrofoam out of each box and threw them down a trap door to the basement, I told him that I was sorry , but since they weren't complete we could not refund his money on either pair, he was freaking out and crying like a little bitch, saying that he was a student and cant afford over 13000 dollars on speakers, he called the manager over to complain that I tampered with the boxes, the manager asked me if I did that and I winked at him as I denied it and invited the customer to look for himself,as I walked him to the door and held it open for him as he was balling his eyes out I whispered to him I TOLD YOU NOT TO FUCK WITH ME, When I went back inside me and the manager were laughing so hard we were almost in tears. Sorry about the long post but I am sure that anybody who has worked in retail can share my joy

Somehow to them this makes it ok to skip ahead of another customer for assistance. Also, why threaten to take your business elsewhere because we can't just give away free merchandise to you? I don't personally care where you shop, I don't work on commission. Then there is the broad question, what do you have on sale? There are sale stickers and signs on the products, throughout the store, just lookup, read and buy it! When I hand a customer a refund receipt so they can sign it, they always ask, where?! Each time I say 'where it reads YOUR SIGNATURE'. I had a customer say to me. 'you don't seem to like working here'. They know I cant say the truth, 'you are right b*tch, I hate working here.' Five minutes later one of the new but middle-aged employees would come over to me with the same customer in tow asking me about the same product. And also I don't understand how people will use the fact that there a loyal paying customer and so that should entitle them to getting everything for dirt cheap at a cost to the store. People had no clue what 40% off one regular price item means!
No, you can’t use it on a sale item.
No, it is not on your entire purchase!
This item is already 50% off on sale... you are mad that you can’t use your 40% coupon?? ( actually, the manager gave in on this one for one screaming idiot.... he rang it in at full price and used the 40% off coupon. Idiot actually pranced out like she had ‘won.’) 🤦🏻‍♀️
But the WINNING customer was the lady that came in 15 minuets before closing on Christmas Eve and wanted **Christmas**. It was like she had just heard about this newfangled holiday and wanted to participate. She wanted a tree, lights, ornaments, EVERYTHING!!!
Our Christmas section looked like a bomb had been dropped on it! Very little left and half of that was mangled.

I got behind a combo of several of these customers in one person at a Hobby Lobby the other day. She came at thirty minutes until closing to purchase a very HUGE quantity of ribbons and flowers for, hell, I don't know; either a wedding or a big-ass tacky burlap ribbon show. Anyway, the last twenty minutes of the store's hours she spent at the register as she divvied her buggies into THREE sales so they would all fit on her THREE maxed-out credit cards. The first sale, somewhere around a hundred bucks went on the first card before she realized, HEY, I have a one-time use coupon! Can I put it on the sale I just finished? When she was told no, she proceeded to use it on the second sale. It was for forty percent off ONE item, which got her a ten-dollar item for six bucks. Imagine her disdain when she couldn't get forty percent off her ENTIRE PURCHASE. At this point they had been forced to open three more registers to get rid of the line behind her, but as I was right behind her I was stuck. Then imagine her FURTHER disdain when she found out that, not only could she not use her one-time-only coupon again on the third purchase, she ALSO didn't get an additional fifty percent off the burlap ribbon she dug out of a clearance bin that was ALREADY marked fifty percent off the retail price. It was when she started arguing for the extra fifty percent, and when it was now five past closing, that I lost my shit. I shouted, "For f*ck's sake, woman! You just bought three hundred bucks of tacky ribbon for a hundred and fifty dollars! The store is CLOSED!" Then, in my most impressive demonic voice, completely wrong for the likes of Hobby Lobby, I growled, "GET....OUT!!!" Needless to say, she purchased her last purchase without another word and beat feet to the parking lot to get away from me. The cashier's response to me, once the lady was out the door? "Thank you so much!"

From a customer's perspective I feel like most of these are examples of bad customer behavior, but I am often the "just looking" customer. I don't see a need to have an employee follow me around hungry for a sale when there may be other customers who are more serious about making a purchase that day. When an employee asks multiple times if there's something they can help me find, it makes me feel self conscious, and that they suspect I am stealing, they want me to leave, or trying to pressure me into a sale. As long as a customer isn't also the last minute shopper I don't think just looking is a problem.

(Sorry, this is a bit long)Looking isn't really a problem, but the salesperson who approached you is likely working on the "up" system that most commission based stores have in place. It works like this - as employees arrive for their shifts, they put their name down on a list. The first on the list gets to approach the first customer in the door. The second on the list gets the second customer and so on. The salesperson is supposed to stay with "their" customer, even if only watching from a discreet distance. The salesperson is on commission, remember, so they are expected to make a sale. It's their job to turn "lookers" into "buyers". They can't just arbitrarily choose another customer because that may be another co-workers "up". This system is in place to prevent a) customers being harassed by too many salespeople and b) salespeople fighting over whose customer is whose and who made the sale. Once a customer leaves, (fast or slow, buy or not) the salesperson puts their name back on the list at the bottom and the process is repeated. If a store is exceptionally busy, salespeople may have to "double up" (still following the rotation process) or managers will hit the floor and pitch in. It's a real piss off when a non commissioned manager makes a sale while you're stuck with "just looking" The worst is "just-looking-while-shopping-with-unsupervised-children"

I work at fast food restaurant and this group of drunk people came to the store 30 minutes AFTER we closed the lobby. At that point in time the lobby was almost cleaned and was in the final stages of being mopped, which can be dangerous to walk around on without non-slip shoes, creating a liability. They started banging on the doors and windows trying to get us to let them in. We kept telling them the lobby was closed and was being cleaned but they just kept yelling and swearing outside. We eventually had to call the cops because they not only started threating us with physical violence if we walked out of the store but they also were walking around the building and yelling at the customers in the drive-thru (which is not only scaring the customers, but is also a safety concern for them). Throughout this whole ordeal, I had to "keep positive" and "be respectful" to the people threating to beat me up if I stepped outside.

Customers complain that the stuff isn't priced and get shirty with me because it has the price stuck on or I'll tell them the price and they don't want it but can't be arsed to put it back. I just throw stuff on the floor under till or over my shoulder on to the "shit to put back" trolly behind me and they look at me like im at fault. They're the cheap arse who can't afford to shop at a cheap store. Or they quibble that the shelf label says 10p but when you look at shelf label it's for a different item and the customer knows they're trying to scam you! Like the label will say pasta for 10p but the customer picked up jar of coffee for £2.99 but it was on that shelf! Yeah cause you got your accomplice to put several jars there! You think retail workers are so dumb but we clock what you're doing and know when you are likely to bring the stuff back for refunds cause you realise you overspent. Why are you shopping when you clearly can't afford to!

I am SO grateful for my current job as a liquor store cashier. There is no "customer is always right" attitude in my particular chain. We are allowed to deny service if a customer becomes rude or belligerent towards us and my coworkers have kicked plenty of people out and even gotten them banned for various reasons. I'm used to customer service jobs that require us to bend over backwards for rude, entitled people, so this relaxed attitude is still such a strange concept to me. I've been there about a month and luckily nobody has ever freaked out at me, but my coworkers are all very patient and supportive so I'm not too concerned over it. I do feel so much more comfortable knowing that I'm not totally helpless when it comes to shitty customers though. I understand helping people out when possible, but I'm so fucking sick of businesses throwing their employees under the bus and allowing grown adults to act like this because they know they'll get what they want. I'm always more than happy to cover a couple of quarters or make a small exception (nothing illegal, but maybe doing a return or something under the radar) for our regulars, but I'm not going to cater to you for being a toddler. If you're a legal adult, you'd better fucking act like it.

And I didn’t give discounts because I could not afford to do that. I only in 5 years of business had to tell 2 people never to come back. Corporate own shops want employees to kiss customers asses. This treating sales people like second class citizens is all so stupid. Rude discount seeking couponing customers are not worth it. You have a product or service pay for it or leave. Stores are not public property or a charity. All any sales person should do is be kind and helpful they are not there to be anyone’s whipping post. And should be treated the same way the customer wants treated. The whole thing is so twisted.
