- A Place at the Table in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a restaurant founded by 27-year-old Maggie Kane that allows customers to pay what they’re able to, in order to help those struggling. While critics said the idea would never work, Kane has given away almost 7,000 meals to those in need in one year alone.

Says pay what you can not what you want. Also a lot of people have budgets. They may have enough money to fully pay the meal, but they plan to use the rest of the money for other things.

Well lots of restaurants would rather throw out left over food instead of donating to food banks. This is a way to feed poor and hungry people so they don't have to dumpster dive to keep from starving.

I’m not trying to sound rude or anything but here where I live, in St. Louis, a restaurant did something similar to this. Today, it’s out of business. It’s a VERY kind gesture to serve people like this but there is a risk as well because some people will take advantage of it.
Dodo Gaming more than 80% of customers pay the suggested price and others volunteer for meals and you can donate $10 for a meal token that they give out to someone in need.
Right. You can imagine that people won't do this to a business but truth is, it happens. She's one of the lucky few.

There was a place in Ann Arbor, Mi that was like this place. They too are closed. I used to go with my sister, we loved it and paid it forward. Not enough ppl did so sad.
Larry Hardy I’m sorry you think that. I know that there are too many people who need this. Here in St. Louis, there are over 1300 homeless people as of 2017. Why would I believe that people don’t need it? All I was saying is that there is that risk that people will take advantage of her and her business. A comment above said that 80% of people do pay the recommended price and I’m glad they do! I’m glad that there are people out there willing to risk their own money for the sake of others.

I like the philosophy of inclusion. Now, we need to increase basic salary, give training to those needing jobs, and housing to those who need it. Security needs must be met before self-realization can be achieved, according to Abram Maslow. Every person is needed in order to make this world function well. This is a start. 💓
I completely agree with you. In order to reach self actualization people need their most basic needs met. For example, did you know that every year thousands of children don't go to school because they don't have clean clothes? There are schools that have started to wash children's clothes and attendance rates have increased. Sure but the government shouldn’t force people to pay for others. We need to promote good community’s with this type of thing put not raise minimum wage which just causes inflation anyways.
People can get training, a lot of it is motivation, maybe you can’t afford college but you can work hard st your job and get them to train you

I absolutely LOVE this concept. I wish there were more places like this across the board. Reminds me of a Cosby Show episode when Elvin decided he didn't want to be a doctor anymore because he didn't feel right charging sick people to help them feel better. Would be nice if there was a café like hers in San Francisco. I'm on disability, as well as many of my neighbors, low-income and it's all we can do to make it thru the month with enough to eat. I'm in a wheelchair, but would still be willing to do some kind of volunteering to pay for a meal. Way to go, Maggie. A good healthy meal is very important, and no one should have to go hungry just because they might be poor.

We went there today.. We were greeted by a lovely volunteer ( Yeah you heard the right volunteer) Who explained everything with his "ten cent tour" I fell in love before ever eating, because no one should ever go hungry! We ordered and paid full price, left a tip, and bought a meal token and left it for someone who can't afford a healthy hot meal! If we lived close my butt would be down there once to twice a week to volunteer! If you are looking for a way to give back.. this to me was amazing! The food was incredible, and everyone was nice! The place is super clean which is more than I can say for most of the places we have around!

World would be way different. Restaurants likely wouldnt make enough money to pay too many workers, people would lose job opportunities, they wouldnt be able to pay to eat at restaurants, the restaurants would close down. It's really annoying when people see something nice and assume it's just a win win without looking at the other side.
