Wow, I was a kid but I remember that. Loved A-Train when I went to Chicago.
I was 5 years old when J-VILLE beat UK in the NCAA Tournament. I could be wrong but if memory serves me, it was Adolph Rupps last team with UK. This was the second game that I remember as a kid watching UK play.

Walton took care of those two, along with Keith Wilkes etc all.
He went up against many of the best centers of all time, including Kareem, and many times outplayed them. One great center who I think especially struggled against Gilmore was Moses Malone. Gilmore outmuscled him. Gilmore was a big bruiser who had a finesse game also.
Mr. Gilmore is a class act.

@@anthonytaylor7928 What makes you think that a player can't be underrated and still be in the Hall of Fame? First, it took him more then 20 years to get in the Hall of Fame, which was way too long a wait for him, given his resume. He was the ABA's second-best player ever, after Dr. J. He and Dr. J are also the only two men to make at least 5 All-Star teams in both leagues. He won one ABA MVP and one ABA title. Advanced metrics show him as a very valuable player...he ranks in the top 15 among all players when you combine NBA and ABA careers. He's arguably a top-10 center of all-time, but yet rarely gets mentioned in such lists. All of that points to him being pretty underrated.
Artis looks great! One the preeminent players of his era from the ABA to the NBA, Miss those ABA Games back in Indy! Sadly NBA only took 4 teams from the defunked league

I grew up watching Artis Gilmore with the Kentucky Colonels and in college with Jacksonville. As an adult working as a journalist, I had the privilege of a lifetime of getting to interview Artis for a feature story. He is a genuine, smart and easygoing person. Just like talking with a fan, rather than a great of the game.
And he is so underrated. In just his NBA years, which were after his great peak in the ABA of '74-76, Artis Gilmore has the highest lifetime shooting percentage (ranking all players who took at least 20,000 shots) of any NBA player.
What a sharp guy. I remember watching Artis with his huge afro playing for the Ky colonels. He looked 7 foot 5 with that Afro back in the day. He was a great player!!
If Bob Lanier had not been injured in the penultimate game, St Bonaventure might well have won the national championship. Bona’s tallest guy without Lanier was Matt Gant and he was no match for the twin Sequoias: Gilmore and Burrows who were both over 7 feet tall.

Artis Gilmore is a very modest, humble individual. It would have been easy for him to give the false rap that the NBA was a better league decades ago when he played. Instead, he was effusive in his praise of the quality, skill and talent level in today's NBA.
I agree that the hype about the old days is a bit much, but I do have to say that I miss the half court game and the ability to play with your back to the hoop. Also, shooting a ton more 3's means watching a ton more misses.
I heard A-Train talking about the better equipment & facilities available to today's players -and that was it. The B-Ball IQ alone of the great players of the 70s & 80s is light years from what's actually out there on
the court today. Mr. Gilmore spoke on the modern equipment available to all today's players- but what good is that when so many young players are not taking advantage of it & as a result of poor
conditioning are always getting injured and can't stay on the court ? The lack of veterans on these teams to even attempt to school the young players is clear. Since the league is approaching 30 years
or so now of no hand checking & rules that makes playing actual team defense a no no , the only false rap I see would be by someone born yesterday & this version of pro ball is all that's known- then that false narrative is fine.

I can't watch today, I haven't watched a game since the 2014 NBA finals. The product was much more fun to watch 80s and 90s
I met him once and shook his hand. I was 6'3 230lbs at the time and I swear he was going to lift me right off the floor with a hand shake. HUGE man and a great player.

I saw Artis play with the Kentucky Colonels vs the Nuggets with David Thompson. Artis Gilmore is a very underrated center.
Artis is so heavily underrated and just isn't talked about enough when people start listing out legendary centers. His peak was early and short but man was he badass

Always articulate Artis Gilmore was a leader of the 1970 Jacksonville University team that played in the NCAA Championship game against UCLA. I think that Jacksonville squad may have been the first college team to start two 7-footers, with Artis joined by Pembrook Burrows. Burrows went into law enforcement as Florida's tallest Highway Patrolman.

I was just a young kid when the A Train was playing for the Bulls, but what I do remember of him was he was a very good player on usually very bad teams in Chicago. My memory of him was when he helped lead the 80-81 Bulls to the playoffs. That was a very entertaining season for the pre Jordan Bulls.
Artis Gilmore played for the Kentucky kernals back in the1970s, he played against Dr Julius Erving and many other great ABA players. One of the last years Kentucky kernals won the ABA championship. I enjoyed listening to them on the radio. Kevin Gregory and others who played for the Kentucky Wildcats were playing on the kernals team

Artis Gilmore was certainly a pleasure to watch. He had a deceptively effective hook shot of his own in addition to his phenomenal defense and rebounding skills. Too bad he never had any support in Chicago.

Around 1990, played 3 on 3 at the Y against AG; he was charitable, allowing opponents to rebound and shoot without being terrified. A gentleman.
The A Train is still my favorite Chicago Bull to this day.
Good interview. He mentioned Cowens. I had an autographed photo of Cowens rebounding over Gilmore, and I was excited when he joined the Celtics but by then the team wasn’t good and his best days were behind him.
I liked Artis...really good player and nice guy. I did, however, see him get totally dominated by Wilt Chamberlain in an All Star game in WIlt's last year in the league. It was a inter league game. Wilt had 8 blocks and scored at will...funny how Artis left Wilt out. Then again, he only faced him a few times. Just put Wilt v Artis Gilmore in search and the inter all star game will come up.
Probably too early for Artis. Walton said the same thing happened to him against Kareem. They needed a couple more years of seasoning.
Kentucky Colonels with Artis Gilmore always worried me whan they went up against my lndiana Pacers , Mel Daniels was a beast but every time Artis was a handfull . Loved the ABA days .

I'm pleased he mentioned Bill Walton. In the Blazers title year, they played the Bulls w/Gilmore in the first round. I was nervous about it, mostly because of Gilmore.
Also, Chicago (still in the western conference!?) had home court advantage, and it was only a best 2 out of 3 series. Both teams won all their games on the others home court, but games 1 and 3 were at Chicago, so the Blazers advanced.
Gilmore out-scored and out-rebounded Walton (slightly), but Walton led in assists, steals and blocks.
Thanks for sharing that with us. I'm a Chicagoan and a great bulls fan. I followed college and NBA pro back then when I was in early high school. I definitely remember the finals Blazers Walton's team against Dr. J's loaded (actually over loaded) with talent 76rs. But I don't remember that first series our Bulls against Walton's Blazers. What year was that?
@@chicagorhtours The same year as the Philly/Blazers final. The Blazers met the Bulls in the first round, best 2 out of 3 then. (The Bulls were still in the western conference at the time.)

He speaks like a college professor, not a typical NBA player of today. His team in the NCAA finals against UCLA was better and should have won.The difference was that in the second half their team was out coached by John Wooden. They did not adjust. Give credit to Sidney Weeks also, he to took it to another level in the second half of that championship game.

I remember back in '73, when visiting Chicago, and went to old Chicago Stadium when the Bulls had a starting five of Artis Gilmore, Bob Love, Chet Walker, Norm Van Lear, and Jerry Sloan! Might be one of the greatest of all time.

He was a ten time all-star and still cracks my top 20 of most underrated players.

He awesome at Kentucky, i was 10, met him at a ge Christmas party, and he was gonna be there signing autographs, huge line, erbody waiting for him to pull up, looking at cars. A little sports car parks right next to us, its artis. And he didn't have a driver seat, he was sitting in back , driving.

Back in the 70's as a Jr. High wannabe photographer I blended in with the pro photographers with my fake "press pass" lol at the end of the court when Artis and the Bulls were in town to play the Pacers (back before security was a big thing). I got some great action shots of him and at one point he gave me a dirty look that scared me lol.
I remember Iowa & Downtown Freddie Brown losing to Jacksonville in the tourney on a last second tip in that was certainly after the buzzer. Took me years to get over it. LOL.😁

Grew up in Chicago and was lucky enough to see Artis Gilmore play through his entire career. He was a great and underrated player. I believe Jabbar thought Gilmore was his toughest opponent also.

My friends and I played in a Pizza Hut /NBA hoop it up tournament in Orlando FL 30 + years ago, Artist had my 6’9” buddy hooked wit his R arm I was cutting of Artist L side, he hooked me, I couldn’t move any direction, I told my teammate I’m not going anywhere, my teammate said him neither. We started laughing about that, Artist too, . Someone hit a game winner at that pt. Artist was kind enough to walk over to the nearest bench with us and talk NBA basketball with us for 30 + minutes. He was kind
Artist was kind and extremely humble. Glad he’s in HOF. We have a picture of him throwing a fake punch at a teammate while smiling and kidding around with him. We probably wouldn’t have minded if it was real😊 cuz we wanted to hit him. Great time, great man and great memory

The three point shot totally changed the dynamics of the game and not in a good way as far as I'm concerned. Every game was a war in the paint, now every game is watching seven footers shoot three point shots. As far as I'm concerned they ruined the game.

Artis Gilmore was very strong, and he gave Kareem the most problems, because he would shove him as he was trying to establish position for the skyhook.

Everyone is paid or delusional to state todays game is better then yesterday's.
Proof is 3o yrs ago games because live tv instead taped delay. The national boom started turned international. Then the internet, worldwide exposure, 30% pop increased worldwide, every game televised in every hut worldwide........ but with this available easy access the views an attendance go down every year.
But the game is better, no its not.
