- House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has said he would be "strongly opposed" to US President Donald Trump addressing the Houses of Parliament during his state visit to the UK. Mr Bercow told MPs "opposition to racism and sexism" were "hugely important considerations". He was applauded by SNP MPs after his comments.
President Trump was invited to make a state visit after meeting Theresa May in Washington last month.

I love British politics. It always sounds like a pub brawl may break out at any minute.
Me too... this is how a very old country do politics. :D
better than having everything discussed over twitter...
it is fun to watch though
This is real politics. Not a Presidential side show with pre-prepared questions and answers.
Tiger Eye this is for snobs who don't live in the real world

In comparison to American politics where The Terminator (Arnie), the county Sheriff (Reagan) and the Muppet (Palin) get elected it is very much real.
A talk between Trump and Bercow wouldn't work because Trump wouldn't understand anything Bercow said
I fear the reverse would equally be true....
Bercow is there for a laugh, Trump is at the WH to get things done, Sadly, British MPs aren't up to the task. too much selfindulgence.
Very humorous!

Bercow is the best speaker in recent history. Imagine Betty or Bernard demonstrating this level of principle. It doesn't always make him popular, though it DOES make him honourable, honest and decent. He will be sorely missed.
He has exactly the right approach and type of character, of someone who's appointed to be the Speaker.
I wholeheartedly concur.
Not only honourable, but he is also witted and an extremely talented 'speaker' in the literal sense. I've yet to see something this man could not do.
@@VisaxLP Forgive my language, but all he's really done (and it should arguably have been done sooner) was to apply well-established legal precedents to put a stop to May's shit, which is utterly out of control. The tabloids has the usual illiterate responses ("Traitor", "Hang him!", etc, etc), but thankfully, the dross who turn out such drivel day after day don't control parliament. Bercow does. And Bercow has a brain.
Parliament is basically a bunch of rowdy schoolkids, and Bercow has exactly the right temperament to be the one teacher they half-listen to.
I'd actually love to see a trump address in parliament. They would not give him the silent respect he's used to.

If Trump spoke to parliament, those pussified politicians wouldn't know what hit them. They'd piss their pants at political incorrectness (better known as the truth).

@@alcostello6114 Trump is deteriorating before our eyes. Last weeks foofaraw on whether or not Hurricane Dorian would hit Alabama and the rhetorical contortions and illegal altering of old weather maps to make Trump 'correct' in retrospect are, to use his word, sad. Why should foreign leaders address our parliament.Obama didn't do it so Trump shouldn't.

KatchouroBlade don't agree with that personally, not just because of Trump.

I’m a Brit who lives in the US. I truly wish American politics could be more like this.
to be honest as someone from a democracy in the "third world," I am very amazed with the british parliament. I mean this speaker is from the conversative party and it portrays a picture in your head when you think about his party and assume how his character would be but in all the videos I have watched he challanges that assumption I had. this is what I like in UK, that everyone no matter what their ideologies are, democrats and have the centuries long democracy culture embedded in them.
The place hasn't been the same since Bercow and Skinner departed. It was almost as if there was still a fair amount of honour, and integrity, and decency, within the House - but only in December 2019 did we realise that it was largely contained within those two men.

Sincerely, a worried viewer from outside the Anglosphere.
A common attitude in the West allied world right now is to oppose Trump, but maintain faith in America as a country. Trump's lack of understanding of global politics, egocentric grandstanding and fondness of dictators is viewed more as his personality and opinions, not necessarily representative of America, all of it's people or the will of congress as a whole. Basically, we're just riding this out until someone politically competent is elected, of either party. Speaking as someone from Australia, with a particular interest in European politics, more educated on English ones. Of course, I could well be wrong.
Well ok, but, he's still president for 5 years. He did achieve the promises that actually brought him votes, like the creation of jobs for the unemployed (mostly by virtue of the global economy being favourable), so I don't think the biggest group of Trump voters will switch.
Though nominating Trump again might bring out more uncommitted Democrats to the polling station (must be a crazy thing to talk about for an Australian), so maybe? IDK, but him staying for 5 years must be at least considered.

I think it's different because we have higher expectations of the US, since the two countries have such a close relationship. So if we disagree with how a president presents himself and his views we will not shy out of speaking up.
Less developed countries shouldn't be isolated for their backwardness rather integrated in an attempt to show how not only is an egalitarian society prosperous but is desirable, developed nations however which are more powerful than the UK which socially regress shouldn't be endorsed as they already know of the advantages of egalitarianism yet they choose to ignore them for rhetorical/imperialist/reactionary reasons.

Parliament is for the ministers and the “members of Parliament”. Not for foreign leaders.
That would have been a better point to make, rather than petty criticism of particular US policies.
Seems like the UK should be open to more allies, not less
An address by a foreign leader, to both houses of parliament, is not an automatic right. It is an earned honor. Moreover, there're many presidents for state visits to take place to our country which do not include an address to both houses of parliament. That's the first point. The second point is, in relation to Westminster Hall, there're three key holders to Westminster Hall. The Speaker of the House of Commons, The Speaker of the House of Lords and the Lord great Chamberlain. Ordinarily, we are able to work by consensus and the hall would be used for a purpose such as a real address or an another purpose by the agreement of the three key holders. I must say to the honourable gentlemen, to all who signed his early day motion and to others with strong views about this matter on either side of the argument. That before the imposition of the migrant ban. I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump, I am even more strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. So far as the Royal Gallery is concerned and again, I operate on advice. I do not perhaps have as strong as say in that matter, it is in a different part of a building. Although customarily, an invitation to a visiting leader to deliver an address there would be issued in the names, of the two speakers. I would not wish to piss you an invitation to President Trump to speak in the Royal Gallery. And I conclude by saying to the honourable gentleman this; we value our relationship with the United States. If a state visit takes place, that is way beyond and above the pay grade, of the speaker. However, as far as this place is concerned, I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law, and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.
Beautifully spoken as always by John Berkow, I've never heard anyone use or speak our language so well

A very good speaker but the gates of a parliament should for the sake of courtesy always be open for a foreign leader it affects the foreign diplomacy.
The gates of a parliament should be open to those who live under its decrees. Its people. A leader has no default place in a parliament that isn't the one they serve. If they want to speak to the people of another country, there are plenty of ways for them to do so without entering a house of parliament they have no rightful stake in. Bercow is right.
