  • House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has said he would be "strongly opposed" to US President Donald Trump addressing the Houses of Parliament during his state visit to the UK. Mr Bercow told MPs "opposition to racism and sexism" were "hugely important considerations". He was applauded by SNP MPs after his comments.
President Trump was invited to make a state visit after meeting Theresa May in Washington last month.

Trump's lack of understanding of global politics, egocentric grandstanding and fondness of dictators is viewed more as his personality and opinions, not necessarily representative of America, all of it's people or the will of congress as a whole. Less developed countries shouldn't be isolated for their backwardness rather integrated in an attempt to show how not only is an egalitarian society prosperous but is desirable, developed nations however which are more powerful than the UK which socially regress shouldn't be endorsed as they already know of the advantages of egalitarianism yet they choose to ignore them for rhetorical/imperialist/reactionary reasons.

An address by a foreign leader, to both houses of parliament, is not an automatic right. It is an earned honor. Moreover, there're many presidents for state visits to take place to our country which do not include an address to both houses of parliament. That's the first point. The second point is, in relation to Westminster Hall, there're three key holders to Westminster Hall. The Speaker of the House of Commons, The Speaker of the House of Lords and the Lord great Chamberlain. Ordinarily, we are able to work by consensus and the hall would be used for a purpose such as a real address or an another purpose by the agreement of the three key holders. I must say to the honourable gentlemen, to all who signed his early day motion and to others with strong views about this matter on either side of the argument. That before the imposition of the migrant ban. I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump, I am even more strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. So far as the Royal Gallery is concerned and again, I operate on advice. I do not perhaps have as strong as say in that matter, it is in a different part of a building. Although customarily, an invitation to a visiting leader to deliver an address there would be issued in the names, of the two speakers. I would not wish to piss you an invitation to President Trump to speak in the Royal Gallery. And I conclude by saying to the honourable gentleman this; we value our relationship with the United States. If a state visit takes place, that is way beyond and above the pay grade, of the speaker. However, as far as this place is concerned, I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law, and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons.

The gates of a parliament should be open to those who live under its decrees. Its people. A leader has no default place in a parliament that isn't the one they serve. If they want to speak to the people of another country, there are plenty of ways for them to do so without entering a house of parliament they have no rightful stake in. Bercow is right.
