I still miss going to this layout, but it was nice to join in on paying Tuffy a visit. Next to Eddie, Barry and Craig, Tuffy's a true gentleman and you can never have a dull conversation with the guy. Also, I'm glad the intro turned out well considering I filmed it, though I still find it humerus that you went for the wrong door first. 😂

One of my favorite features: He didn’t want to knock streetlights loose while reaching across the layout, so he custom fabbed flexible lights using piano wires. So aaaaaaall those street lights you see, can bend all the way over and straighten themselves back up if you knock into them. And of course, they’re all hooked up and lit.

That is AMAZING. The level of detail on something that small is INSANE. Personally, I'd rather do 3-rail O-scale or larger because I don't have the most stable hands on the planet. My dad could do smaller scale because he's an electronics technician by trade AND has hands that are more stable than mine. I could solder wires and program something with a little guidance, but my dad could do it with a quick CZcams video and a diagram. Some of the oil field equipment my dad gets in from the field has a rat's nest of wires for him to sort out, which is difficult enough, then he has to put new software and operatingsystems on the equipment, and that's a nightmare. The good news is that he doesn't have to do this on military grade equipment. "Military grade" is just a fancy way of saying "built by the cheapest bidder", which explains a LOT about the Grumman Long Life Vehicle the United States Postal Service currently uses.

convert to N and you will double your track without changing the amount of space. Model railroading is all about the trains, and N scale is the best cross between space and scenic detail and the amount of train for the space being used.

This layout is a beast. I can't believe the "access panel" with the cut and the river in it. The blue modern yard lights next to a few sodium vapor streetlights are a beautiful touch. The little rolly chairs upstairs and the mad ceiling chair just make the whole thing. Thank you for sharing this piece of wonderful insanity.

Hi Mark, Tuffy’s layout is sooo ultra cool! Everything about it is beautiful. As a detail person myself, I so appreciated the tiny scenes he created. The space felt cozy and relaxing. Like going into a choo choo cocoon! I’m impressed with the fabulous lighting installation, not just of the rooms but of the layout itself. Like Leighton said nothing done at random but with purpose. Loved those brilliant rolling chairs. The hidden train compartment was amazing complete with scenery and a creek-WOW! And to echo you and Leighton, I loved the old Lionel trains he had. For sure an amazing and so creative use of space. Many thanks to Tuffy for sharing his beautiful layout with us. And to you Professor for making yet another excellent field trip video, and as always cheers to you!

    • @kath3076
      @kath3076 Před 22 dny

The Lionel is for his granddaughters to run. The baseball field is actually a softball field (his granddaughters play softball!) My favorite feature is that all the streetlights are flexible and bend and straighten if you knock into them, instead of snapping or coming loose.

I'd call this my idea of a "dream layout" since I model N scale, but my 6'-3" frame would much prefer a layout where I can stay upright. Still, amazing detail, and I can't believe all his cars are individually numbered! Not to mention the tiny tiedowns!

I love N gauge. :) I sometimes dream of building a layout in a glass-topped table, but I have too many other hobbies. It'd be fair to say that I try to turn every simulation game I play into a sort of model railroad, literally in the case of Transport Tycoon, figuratively in Kerbal Space Program where I'm building infrastructure in the form of mining ships with automated fuel factories, tankers and space stations to support all the comings and goings, plans for colonies... :) It's going to take some doing, especially with bugs to work around.

    N scale.
Yup, i should have chosen that.
    But i chose HO scale.
And i bought a lot of stuff for it already.
And i got a room available. 3.7 meters by 2.7 meters.
I can expand the room by knocking down a wall, or 2, and that would increase it to lets say double, maybe 2/3rd increase of space.
Now i am going to use the first room, and think about expanding lateron.
But i wish i had thought about scale a bit more before buying the stuff.

Regular height, but my own layout room is about the same size floorspace wise as the little room on this layout where the baseball diamond is. How I squeezed a 3x6 and 4x8 in there plus a little aisle in between I'm in mild disbelief about even though I'm the silly sod who did the work. 3 rail O-27.
Getting back to this gentleman's layout, again, all I can really say is....whoa.... The hanging chair to get to the yard tracks is inspired, though I'd be a skosh nervous to use it as I'm no lightweight.
