Mike Skinner's recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain's party-hearty garage/2-step (and later grime) movement. Skinner was initially an outsider in the garage scene. Although his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium, he listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle.
The Streets biggest hits include “Blinded By The Lights”, “Dry Your Eyes”, “Don’t Mug Yourself”, “Fit But You Know It”, “Let’s Push Things Forward” and “Has It Come To This”. The iconic Streets catalogue also includes the albums “Original Pirate Material”, “A Grand Don’t Come For Free”, “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”, “Everything Is Borrowed” and “Computers and Blues”.

Lyrics:
This ain't the down, it's the upbeat, make it complete
So what's the story? Guaranteed accuracy, enhanced CD
Latest technology, darts hit treble twenty
Huge non-recoupable advance, majors be vigilant
I excel in both content and deliverance
So let's put on our classics and we'll have a little dance, shall we?
No sales pitch, no media hype, no hydro, it's nice and ripe
I speak in communications in bold type
This ain't your archetypal street sound, scan for ultrasounds
North, South, East, West and all round
And then to the Underground
You say that everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
There's no excuses, my friend
Let's push things forward
You say that everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
There's no excuses, my friend
Let's push things forward
As we progress to the check point
I wholeheartedly agree with your viewpoint
But this ain't your typical garage joint
I make points which hold significance
That ain't a bag, it's a shipment
This ain't a track, it's a movement, I got the settlement
My frequencies are transient and resonate your eardrums
I make bangers not anthems, leave that to the Artful Dodger
The broad-shouldered fifty-one percent shareholder
You won't find us on Alta Vista
Cult classic, not bestseller, you're gonna need more power
Plug in the three phase and the generator, crank it up to gigawatts
Critics, ready with your pot shots, the plot thickens
Put on your mittens for these sub-zero conditions
But remember I'm just spitting, remember I'm just spitting
Once bitten, forever smitten
You say that everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
There's no excuses, my friend
Let's push things forward
You say that everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
There's no excuses, my friend
Let's push things forward
Spit jewels like Eastern riches, junkie fixes
Around here we say "birds", not bitches
As London Bridge burns down, Brixton's burning up
Turns out you're in luck, 'cause I know this dodgy fuck in the Duck
So it's just another show flick from your local city poet
In case you geezers don't know it, let's push things forward
It's a tall order but we're taller, calling all maulers
Back street brawlers, corner shop crawlers, victory's flawless
Love us or hates us but don't slate us
Don't conform to formulas, pop genres and such
Sharp darts, double dutch, parked cars troubles you much
With more bud - let's push things forward
You say that everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
There's no excuses, my friend
Let's push things forward
You say that everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
There's no excuses, my friend
Let's push things forward
Original Pirate Material- definitely one of the most criminally underrated albums in modern British music
Really just hip-hop it’s so good
It’s a masterpiece for the come down of the 90s
Easily one of the greatest electronic albums ever produced.
Most definitely my friend
Your opinion is very good, for me it's got too be in the top 25 👍🏻
This bloke never got the recognition he deserved.
yea and now look at the amount fo shit talking he is getting on this and other videos since he finally uploaded the full HQ music videos
he did but underrated or not that famous like. only in the UK in the early to mid 2000s
Sean Baggen the imperial Dragon no. Fuck off
@@pyeltd.5457 this shit garbage
Get da fuc out of here

The guy is a genius

"Leave that to the Artful Dodger - Sorry Craig"
lovely little moment from my youth

The line about "not finding us on AltaVista" dates it though....

My nephews introduced me to The Streets when I was 54. Although I'm not a Londoner I worked shifts which took me to work at just about every tube station in the Greater London area. I used to listen to the pirates instead of the mainstream music stations. The lyrics struck a chord with me. The gentrification of Brixton, Tooting, Clapham and Docklands was well under way at that time. I worked with 'geezers' who spoke just like him. Original Pirate Material is an often revisited album.
He's a brumy m8?
He changed his accent. He's from Brum. Think Jaykae called him out on dropping his accent. Both Blue Noses.
So here’s my claim to fame…😆
Mike used to live on the street down from mine in Birmingham before he moved to London. He was one of my big brother and sisters best friends in primary school, apparently my mom has a photo somewhere of him pushing me around in my pushchair but we’ve never come across it while looking through the album’s. I think he was still quite young when they moved so he was bound to lose the accent, I’ve been up north for about 10 years and mine isn’t half as strong now.
Lol JayKay is from Stretford but has somehow manage to lose any accent, the guy hasn’t got one
a lot of people of the last couple of generations talk like this in Brum, and south of the city has always been a toned down version of the accent in the first place
This album was the Sound track to the best years of my life
you are not alone!
You must both be 30-somethings like me then... 😊👌🏼
Sooo true mate
@@Ray-gz5wh same. But I'm a 26 year old American.

"Once Bitten, Forever Smitten"
Mike Skinner is one of the great modern poets
This album helped me to get through 2004. My girlfriend left me after we moved into a house. It was a 25 yr mortgage but she moved out about 23 hours into our tenure. After an initial feeling of despair I started getting wasted whilst listening to this album constantly whilst rebuilding my life on a cocktail of whizz and coke. Great year.
It helped me to get through 2007 too. Kept me from losing my mind kind of. Thank you Mike.
Surprised it wasn't A Grand Don't Come For Free. IMO that is the best thing to come out of the UK in the last 40 years.
So you rebuilt your life by drinking and doing drugs, give me a break
Ha! Love this. Just got to stay positive... this album was really good for that.
A tricky beat...but he slaughtered this. Unpredictable lyricism. That boy good
He looks so very young. I feel so very old.
He's only 40 now, mad how he was doing this at 22.
He has an Amazon live band video special where he looks good at current 40ish age.
First I am American and found that other Americans found the Streets let's say an aquired taste. I got this when it first came out when I was in the US Navy and I was DJing as a side hustle and used this album a lot back then.
Good times, Phat beats, and a really hard slang to learn.
2002: You won't find us on Alta Vista
2021: This song is the only evidence Alta Vista ever existed.
I was 14 in 2002 what was Alta Vista again ?
@@martinomalley6129 it was an online search engine in the vein of Google and Yahoo but nowhere near as popularly used. I believe it didn't last much longer than this song to be honest.
@@shawnmcloughlin42 lol cheers
🔥🔥🔥
Funny thing is that I probably downloaded this song off of there after I heard it for the first time at 14
This sounds better now than it ever has.
...as good as ever!
I remember being in awe, watching this in 2002 on TV
I’m still in awe. 👏🎶
I feel like this guy gave hope to a lot of the English rappers that are coming out today, from all the highfocus crew to Slowthai.

I'm a teenager back in the west Midlands when I hear this track. The streets was (and still secretly is) our fucking hero
I remember watching this for the first time late at night on MTV in Germany.
Had no idea what dude was talking about but that instrumental was funky
Mike skinner the spokesman of a generation
Classic album one of UK's finest..
As he says: "cult classic, not best seller"
I remember first watching this video on MTV2. Where the music went
Such an underrated album. Still loving it 2 decades later.
I was born and raised in a small town in the US. This song was a huge part of my life when it came out. Now relistening as an adult, I appreciate it so much more.
The us? Wtf
Aaahhh the good old days
What a huge artist. What a unique album.
Who’s listening in 2024
Giving me nostalgia right here i remember this on MTV
Still listening to this 2023 and still love it.
When this first came out I was like bloooooown away! The beat is so damn catchy and that accent, I can’t get enough.
I’m from the US and my UK friend introduced me to you ages ago. I lost contact with him. On a stoner night I remembered this song, I’m so glad I was able to remember this song. Now I get to enjoy you. Hint. This was during Winmx days.
The Streets still slap in 2021.
2005, first year of college, playing soccer, Ireland born teammate, opened my ears to The Streets. Never turned back.
What a legend Mike is
I forgot how good this album was.
Digging it out.
Reading/Listening to Mikes Book.. Educational,Entertaining and Honest.
STILL SOUNDS GREAT DON'T KNOW WHAT'S TAKEN ME SO LONG TO GET the streets back
Another banger from "The Streets". I love how this guy owns his own space. Even from back on his first album. Amazing artist man. Mad respect!
given the rise of mumble rap in the interim, Mike Skinner now sounds like a fully tech MC in 2018
I spent more for this than I should have when it came out on vinyl and I had little idea about the artist.
It was kind of an incredible culture shock to me at the time, the lyrics really held their own and struck by me.
There were no excuses my friend...let's push things forward.
Still listening to this 2021.love it.
"Cult classic,not a best seller" Great line😮
this was on mtv2 every morning back on 2002 lol
You know how old this song is I was 15-16 when I first saw the video. That was almost 2 decades ago. It started my love for British rap and hip hop. And 19-20 years on i still love this stuff.
The best thing about this song is that he is rapping the truth and his life storyline
I'm proud to say I never lost the faith in Mike its just such an original vibe with lyrics that are straight out of a normal every day man in the street.
Think he's back on the road as the streets again so am hoping to hear some new tunes.
Keep on keepin' on Mike.
DirtyPoochRacing I was too young to listen at the time of release, saw him at a festival last summer and can’t stop listening since
Check out his new song with IDLES
I was a Streetie from 15-22 years old, a friend gave me your album ‘original pirate material’ it was so ausum. felt like you could relate with me and helped me so much with my transition into a brand new lifestyle. Thank You so much for everything.
can't comprehend this channel is not in the millions
This ain't a track, it's a movement. YES.
I am genuinely in awe of this guys attitude and sound. At a time when everyone was turning the USA Gangsta up to 11 Mr Skinner went the other way, and BOOM!! still box-fresh here in 2018. BRAVO that man. 🏆
@Boom Glglgl "bangers not anthems, cult classics not bestsellers". C'mon mate did you even listen to the song?
Here here
Indeed, even the clothing and style wouldn't look out of place in a UK bar today (although the hair might be a bit scruffier now...)

Spring has officially Sprung! 🎹🌞
I wasn't that keen on The Streets when I first heard them, but I can't think of any other artist that has grown on me so much over time. The tracks seem to have stood the test of time and it's sometimes hard to imagine that Original Pirate Material was released 20 years ago! Mike Skinner seems to have captured the essence of England's working class youth, in a way that no one else has been able to, before or since.
If the streets came out in the last couple of years he would be GIGANTIC.
it will take off once someone makes a meme or two
Always worshipped this brother - damn ✌🏻❤️🌳😘
I find this deeply inspiring, even moving. Mike Skinner made art out of the substance of the daily life of so many of us, with wit and humour he came up with something fresh and unique.
Love this tune used to blast it all time on the sesh...so let's put on our classics & well have a lil dance shall we
Original Pirate material. Bought it when it came out...still listening now. Love Mike Skinner..what a poet. Cute af too!
still sounds fresh whos with me 2021? :D
Really a big tune
This beat is timeless
Still luv luv luv this banger
!♡♡♡
That's how I discovered him!! With this song....
Listening to this again, I'd forgotten how awesome it was. Raw and real.
Today is the day the album cam our 16 years ago. A seminal piece of work that can never be repeated or bested. A true classic that will forever stand the test of time and remind everyone why pushing a sound forward is at the very core architecture of music and creativity 🖤
Listen to "INTO THE MOAT"(the LAST greatest Metal Band)
Been known as Dry since Dry Your Eyes Mate came out and a fan since OPM. At one point Mike even followed my twitter. Still a big deal to me. I’ll always be grateful for your songs helping me along the way. Dry Your Eyes Mate, Never Went to Church, Momento Mori, and Edge of a Cliff to name a few.
These guys have truly mastered the dolly shot and green screen.
i heard this on the belgian radio the other day.

James P you won't find us on alta vista
cult classic not best seller
I love that line but I've been listening to this song since I was a teenager and I'm still puzzled by what he means lol.
Basically refers to the fact that Artful Dodger was the music act behind chart topping Garage anthems re-rewind and movin' too fast. I imagine every festival and club nationwide would've played these songs at the time of release.
Revisiting this, can't believe how young he looks.
Agreed. This song. The fact not one other person James it out I mean. How many coincidences I took it’s mathematically impossible
Was a banger when it came out, and it's still a banger today.
2021, still can’t believe these weren’t bigger than they were. Pure talent.
Created from, but delivered too far out of a Time that could honestly grasp and hold it. Absolutely no one and Nothing was ready for this. Too Much, Too Good.
This was my introduction into uk music and almost 2 decades later i still love the shit.
Polo shirts, reebok classics, carling, b&h, skunk, novas, estate pubs, chippies, flip phones.
That is all.
Their album is genius. Usually I'm not amused by Englisch-men speaking. But this is pure joy to everyones ears!😁😎😎😎
This is the most Britishest thing Ive ever heard.
And this is the most grammarest thing I’ve ever heard
So you've to listen to Madness! Shut up, Our House, House of Fun....
Or Blur Park life album!
Oi, you what mate
Yaa fackin mash patayytaaaaa!
Just realized how bloody good the streets were ❤
I don’t know how this just popped into my head. Definitely remember this on mtv
Same here
18 years!
This reminds me of early 00's great era. Miss them days.
i remember seeing you guys support muse it was wild , totally respect ! as artist was great and a good memory for me , i was 16, now pushing my 30's up and still a legend , this artist is a hero to the music
hey give this guy some respect, im 62 and fucking loving this stuff
This very tune was the first thing I heard of authentic UK music. I now know its more garage or whatever but THIS actually got me into grime. I thought it was so ridiculously slick and neat and smart. Then grime blew my head off. I finally got to London in 2005 and met some official grime artists (Kano, Skepta, Jammer) but I remember thinking it would've been sick to meet The Streets. My love of real UK music started with The Streets. I'll never forget.
You moan when everything sounds the same
Then you go buy them
hard to avoid corporations though :(
How did I not understand the song until you wrote that, ive been listening for a decade.. :v
It doesn't say "moan" though?
They say everything sounds the same...then you go buy them
Same for Ubisoft games ;D
Yank here, everybody says “underrated” but he calls it in the middle there “cult classic”. I was a college radio DJ when a friend of his handed me the record. Still ranks as one of my Top Hip Hop records ever, #1 for that year, and a top 10 on the decade.
Still quality content this many years later. I’m playing this video game (Evony, server 1062, HammerChuck) and my teammates are talking about all the “birds” and I just chuckled and started singing this whole album from the beginning
One of the greatest
untouchable tune.. 2020 we are comming for you !
July 2019, still going back to this track
7 hours behind you bru
November 2019
Mike Skinner is THE GOAT. No doubt.
I play the streets at work, just waiting for someone to say "yo, this shit is brilliant" still waiting...glad I found em tho
I got a tape sent up from a london pirate station 2002ish and it had this and Dizzee's I Luv U, special time. And the hardcore continuum goes on.
From a truly ground breaking and timeless album!!
