I am quite late with commenting but I couldn’t agree more with the second point you raised. When I graduated from high school I did a gap year abroad which scared the *** out of me. A mentor told me the following „You are entitled to live by your own rules, you may overthink what society, your family and friends have "taught" you and you can decide for yourself. This does not necessarily mean throwing every measure you lived by overboard, but it means consciously deciding what feels right for your life!“.
I love that and for me it’s a constant reminder that I am the master of my life, even after graduation.
    Btw love your channel ♥️

Yesss, you're so right! It was so liberating to go to univeristy and feel like an independent adult making my own life choices and paving my own way😊😊

This video is so great!! Thank you for the tips! Hopefully, I'll be starting out at Cambridge in the Autumn, so I'd love to see a video on the societies you did or the whole 'Cambridge experience'. Thank you!

It’s a little while ago for me now but I think this video will really help anyone preparing for university etc. I wish someone had given me similar insights beforehand, like you I was first generation.
I do have a Cambridge specific comment/query though which maybe I can raise here...
I have watched a few vlogs from Cambridge students as they were going through their courses and as interesting as it was the main takeaway was just how intense the workload is. A succession of short deadlines for work submissions, weekend lectures and evening working, even on Saturdays, - gulp! There must be potential consequences to this intensity of work in terms of stress and anxiety etc, and in some cases those consequences seem to be realised.
I can understand Cambridge has exacting standards which it wants to preserve but does it really have to be like this?
I believe Cambridge (and Oxford) terms are shorter than other unis by up to two weeks, as a start why not extend Cambridge’s terms in line with them and hence spread the work a bit more. I can imagine one response could be that the length of the terms are ‘tradition’ but is that a good enough reason? Maybe the proven ability to work under enhanced pressure is deemed to be all part of obtaining a Cambridge degree, I don’t know, or it could be that the academic staff prefer spending their time doing research and writing their books rather than teaching awkward students!
I may well have got an unbalanced view of all this from the vlogs, as someone who has actually been through it I would interested in your thoughts. I suppose it can’t be that much of an issue, everyone seems to have loved their time at Cambridge.

Cambridge is very intense. Terms are only 8 weeks long and the workload is extremely heavy. I think you're right, it's all part of tradition and it's considered part and parcel of getting an Oxbridge degree-- that's why they're considered the top universities in the UK and worldwide. They have such intense schedules that, in a way, over-prepare your for the working world, which means you'll always overacheive, since you're used to the pressure and tight deadines.
There is a lot of internal debate about extending term and adding reading weeks but the general consensus, at least from what I can gather, is that students are worried that professors would take advantage of things like this and take it as an opportunity to pile on even more work. This means there'd be a lot of variation across faculties and colleges in terms of workload and expectations, and it'd be difficult to monitor and enforce fairly across the whole university. You raise a good point though! And I'm also in two minds of the debate, having both suffered from the degree and gained from it, coming out of the other side more balanced and able to cope better with pressure.
I'm very grateful for my time at Cambridge but it was love/hate, at times, and after graduating, I certainly look at it with rose-tinted glasses and forget about the difficult times and the stress.
It's also worth mentioning that my professors cared a lot about my wellbeing and the pressure to perform was more self-enforced than anything else. I was often urged to take things easier and give myself breaks! So that's another side of the same coin. A lot of us are such high achievers and put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the best we can be. And most of us are very lucky to have such great professors and wellbeing tutors that do look out for us!
(Sorry that was a very long response).

@@EmmaLouiseVlogs Thanks very much for this, I have a better understanding of the issue now and in particular it's heartening to hear that the tutors/professors were supportive. It probably is the case that when high achieving students go to a high achieving university the outcome can only be intense!! Big respect to you for getting there in the first place, and then going through it, it must give you a lot of confidence. I suspect you will find, or maybe are finding, that you're more than prepared for the demands of the working world.

All good advice. Second the work experience emphasis. Also take a more rounded approach to picking a University not just one based on rank alone. You want to finish University better off than when you started.
Congratulations on being the first to go to University.

Thank you!! Glad you liked the tips. And it's so important to pick a univeristy for the city and the course, above rank, I'd say.
