My father passed away over two years ago and having to go through his extensive collection of tools, parts and collectibles was so daunting, and it was only a small percentage the size of this VW hoard (I don't mean hoard in a negative way, more like a dragon's hoard, haha). Hats off to the grandson for making sure the usable parts and cars go to good homes and not crushed for thrown out.

Same here, its difficult and if like me you know some of the stories behind the stuff then its like a trip back in time, a little story. Clearing stuff out picking up a set of mk1 fiesta pepperpots and knowing it came off a neighbours rolled car 30 years ago

Brilliant episode Jonny, loved it. Dad was a serial Beetle owner in the 60s and 70s(and I still want one). He used to take his 1300 for a service at Renwicks (Plymouth) who were a main VW dealer and I used to lovee going there and looking at all the new cars coming in (the Type 3 Variant was a favourite) and when the 412 Variant came out I thought it was the bee's knees. I've ranted on a bit too much but before I STFU it's not just the cars but the stuff (parts, brochures etc.) that make the place a true treasure trove for any VW nut - I bet your mate Tim was having a right old rummage while he was there.

As a VAG family (my late father had a Type 3 Fastback, Golfs 1 to 4, Polo breadvans and a Touran I have inherited + my current Golf 1, Polo 6R & a B5 RS4), absolutely fascinating especially the period advertising. My Grandad had a 411 with petrol heater and a 76 Golf 1). Hats off to the grandsons for respectfully going through everything. Be great to see the Bay window and 412 restored. Love the family story behind this barnfind. VW's hold a special place in my heart as my dad used to be a panel beater for a VW garage and growing up there has almost always been a Volkswagen on his drive. MK1 Golf, B2 Passat estate (I still want one of my own), various MK2 Polos, a Falicia (still VAG), a Lupo, Golf MK4 and currently a MK5 Golf. Never quite back to the aircooled but I have always appreciated them. I caught his bug for motorbikes too so no VW on my drive currently but when finances allow I hope to correct that.,

Here in the US market we only got the 411s for 1971/72 model year and the 412s for 1973/74. My 411 needs some mechanical work but body wise is in good condition with some slight surface rust around the edges .

I loved this videos. For many, cars are just a lump of metal. Every car has a story to tell and it was once part of someone’s life in good and bad moments. This collection is amazing and it’s great to see that his grandson is looking after it and passing on to good homes.

Another great episode Love the shop history videos and grandad stories, choked me up a little by grandad had a VW camper which I wish I could have kept but I was too young when my dad sold it and my late fathers mechanic had a carman gear. Loved that the 412 and the pickup and the old time car. Would love to see that out running in as well.

Cool video as always, love these barnfinds, looking forward to every new episode. Fun to see som Scania branding on your pants and belt as i live about an hour from the Scania factory in Södertälje and have worked with them to and from on different times in life, once drove one of their test trucks that had an experimental engine with 900+ hp.

My parents lived across the road from a guy who collected Rootes group vehicles plus the odd extra thing like Talbot Samba, Renault 6, coaches and a vintage MG TF. All gone now and house was condemned, but he kept bits and bats of all kinds of things like this Grandad did. Fascinating.

Great video, unlikely to see this again in the modern world! Although my dad passed away some years ago we recently cleared the family home and there are also a lot of car parts, manuals, brochures ans general bits and bobs he acquired over years in the motor trade. We still have his last briefcase when he sold Renaults with the original brochures and glasses guide inside. Love a bit of old garage history

Caught this hallway through and listening I immediately knew it was Walsall although I'd never heard of Gem. My Dad was Walsall born and bred and would have been a similar age to his Grandad. Brilliant episode and a fabulous treasure trove.

My dad has one of these, very rare orange crew cab. Up for sale soon as he is elderly now.
Feel free to go and visit it.
    Located in Bromley.
It was used for the VW commercial 60th anniversary celebrations a few years back, in lower slaughter in the Cotswolds.
    Great old vans.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 75 double cab bay window. they are great vehicles and more practical than people would think. I have the same factory 2ltr type 4 engine and 5 rib box that this guys was planning to put into it. it's taken me a few years so far but have slowly replaced prety much the entire bottom 12 inches of the car!

This is amazing Jonny. Thirty year ago I needed an armature for the dynamo on my 1968 Porsche 912 Right Hand Drive (which still runs on its dynamo and regulator today). No one could supply (Surprise Surprise)! I ended up in desperation going to a scrapyard in Lincolnshire and salvaging the dynamo from a 1600cc or 2000cc van like the one here. Wish now I had taken the complete engine. Using the armature from this salvaged dynamo and my original we made a complete working dynamo. The armature length on the van is longer than the armature length on the VW Beetle car. "Who knew until you needed one?" Just by luck, I realized this by pulling the salvaged one from the van and it matched the 912 Porsche requirement. Must have been to do with higher amperage for commercial use! It's just what you did back in the day. It's a shame this history is being lost, time however moves on. But what a barn find.

    • @user-jd7md1mx2u

@@TheLateBrakeShow It's in storage in my shed and has been for many years. Re-sprayed and engine re-built. Running and driving before I put it away. Paid GBP 6000 for it when I bought it. I was 25. I will be 60 this year. Work took me around the world, to which I am currently in China. When I get back and have a chance to pull the car out, I will give you a call. I also have a 1972 De Tomaso Pantera Right Hand Drive. The RHD Porsche 912 is rare and the Pantera RHD even rarer, but in need of a full restoration/rebuild. I bought it already stripped when I was 30 for GBP 6000. The Late Brake Show keeps me going for when I have time to re-visit both cars. Keep the finds coming!

A Problem with the earlier transporters(type II) was the valves burning on one cylinder because of the oil cooler position. The pickup probably had the same problem so it was parked until Granddad got a Round toit. Being a VW, just swap the engine for a better one.
