Sand is a good alternative for the tray. Prevents mold and viruses, won't fall out all over when you pull the tray. Allows you to just scoop the poop with a cat scoop.
They don’t sleep in the nest box unless they become broody hens sitting on a clutch of eggs. Chickens sleep on the poles off the ground standing up. If you was to of build your own, you have to make sure the roosting poles are not above the nest box’s so the birds don’t poop in the boxes where the eggs are and have to be clean as possible.
