You are THE Man! I've got this camera primed and ready to shoot. You've helped immensely in getting me familiar with this camera. The interface is not as hard as many had made it out to be. Two big thumbs up!👍👍
I'm super glad this video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Great video, it's much appreciated. I hope you have a great day, definitely subscribed for more FX30 content. Thanks!
Best video so far of this camera, thanks

*JUST got this Yesterday, and THIS HELPS ME ALOT. Of course I'll have too see how this works for me and switch depending on what I'm doing,*
Great explaination.straight to the point,
Thank you for this video! It is a wonderful reference!
Subscribed! Thanks for the great video
You're welcome. Thanks for the support and for watching!
Hey Josh, just subscribed and thank you for this fantastic video. Menus are so complex. My Blackmagic 6K Pro is so intuitive. I need to hire the Sony FX30. I made a huge error buying a ZV1- too fiddly. I need needles for fingertips 😀
Hey Josh. I just got my FX30 this week. Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome. Congrats on the FX30. Thanks for watching!
Hey, When did you order it ? I preorder mine and did not recieved the tracking yet
You are absolutly perfect man dude. Thanks a lot
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Super helpful, thank you!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Yay, definitely needed this one. While I am comfortable with the A7IV the FX30 I just picked up feels a bit different.
Glad this video is helpful for you! Yeah, the FX30 and FX3 are quite different than the other alpha cameras.
I had liked a few weeks ago this video but I hadn't commented. This video helps me a lot! Thank you for taking the time of explaining so well! I am a real beginner and without your help, I would totally be a loser 😂 THANK YOU!!!!!!
You are very welcome. Glad the video was helpful for you and thanks for watching!
Great video. Thx.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Nice video.i recommended❤💯❤💯
Got my FX30 and have been muddling my way through the settings. Not really that intuitive but, I just try stuff and figure it out. Thanks for putting this video, not much on this camera for folks that are new to the brand.
You're welcome. I hope you find this video helpful getting started with your FX30. Thanks for watching!
… great, thx for sharing! 👍🏻
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks...✌
Great thank you
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Josh, I found your channel about 6 months ago and have been devouring your content. Both Camara and Farming (Love what you are doing for that community). I was about to buy an FX30 as I'm getting into filming but I found a used FX3 for a great price. I plan of shooting Moto travel and action sports so I invested the extra $.
I'm wondering why you say to start one should shoot in Flexible ISO verses Cine EI? I will experiment with both.
Thanks again from the West Coast of Canada
You're welcome. Congrats on the FX3. I usually recommend starting with Flexible ISO over Cine EI is because you are locked to only using two ISOs in Cine EI. Here is a full explanation of Cine EI:

Thanks for checking out both channels!
EX Info. Thank you. 👍
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video, please consider making another one with the 2.0 firmware update
Thanks! I recently made this video for the FX3, but a lot will be similar to the FX30: czcams.com/video/fBNOwUaOE84/video.html
You mentioned setting the zebras at 45 with the lut off and 41 with the lut on. Does this involve placing the gray card where the person's face would be on the camera? Would this properly expose skin tones in S-log3? I have heard elsewhere that sixty or sixty-five is the proper zebra level for skin tones on S-log3. Thanks!
It’s actually the other way around. Check out this video for my whole process: czcams.com/video/Z4Ic19eP36Y/video.html
Super helpful, especially since I have a japanese camera and I cannot change the language 😊
thank you very much
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, it helped me a lot to get familiar with the fx30 in the menus! I have a question, can I put my luts in another card that is not CFexpress type A in my other slot that I have free?
I believe you just have to load the LUTs into the camera and then you don't need it on the card after that.
I'm not sure if you covered this but how do I set up memory recall with M1-3 in modes? I switch from 240, 120, 24 pretty regularly
Thanks Josh for your content and Happy Holidays...I need help recording timecode as metadata for in post sync with Sony Z 150 camera I can't find the right setting for it to be recorded in the file... I put in the FX30 the Tc in free run and then Tc Make in preset but in the file the clips always start Tc at 00:00:00:00, can you tell me Josh where am I going wrong?
Thanks
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video.
The FX30 is my first cinematic camera, and the settings you suggested got me up and running to an amazing image.
I do have one question though, does CZcams support 10bit color? Or is 8 bit color still the way to go for shooting CZcams content?
🍻
You're welcome! I shoot everything in 10 bit to allow for better color grading. Unfortunately I believe that CZcams is only 8 bit.
Is it possible to change the Exposure with Auto Shutterspeed with one Button click ?
Im running through a slight issue, I have an FS5 and an XLR shotgun sony mic, i have an XLR to Aux cable, after connecting the mic to the camera, the adui isn't clearly recorded with the mic is there something in the settings im missing?
do you know how to reset the record time counter? I can't tell the duration I've been filming do to it just picked up were it left off. I didn't have this issue on my fx3
Just noticed I don't have an Accessibility Menu in my camera, guess the Asia units have a slightly different setting
why not set a mode preset so when you change frame rates it automatically changes the shutterspeed?
Hi Josh and thank you for this, and other videos, about FX30. I'm basically a drone pilot, trying to learn something new - and you are very helpful. I wanted to ask you about exposure and zebra settings. There seems to be some kind of konsensus "out there" that, when filming people in an uncontrolled environment, one can aim for the best skin tone exposure, and that the value would be around 70 % in S-LOG3 . I don't know if you agree to that. But if you do I guess there is a differens if you use LUT or not, just like with the gray. Since I always use the built in 709, what value should I use for skin tone?
I never use skin tone to judge exposure. Everyone's skin is a different color.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks😊👍. Short and easy😊😊

Hello, I don´t have a big budget and can´t afford an A type card, with that in mind what should my settings be?
I've made shots with XAVC-I 4K format, but found out that it is not possible to transfer this format. Is it possible to change formats of the video's you've made in order to be able to transfer my video's?
Amazing video, but I have 1 doubt, its mandatory to use Base ISO (800 or 2500) when shooting in s-log 3? I mean, can I shoot is s-log 3 with ISO 100?
Thanks. Yes you can shoot at other ISOs, but the camera will give you the best dynamic range at the base ISO. Here is another video for you to check out about this: czcams.com/video/AWzqLE64TzI/video.html

You’ve probably answered this repetitive question…….but what’s one more for a newbie.
What three prime APS-C lenses will go best with the FX30?
Great video, and please keep pumping them out.
It depends on what you need. The Sigma 16 30 56 is a solid set.
@@Josh_Sattin~ I’ve got my crosshairs on that set, and you’re right…….SOLID.
Good lookin’ out! 🍻
Bought it in Japan. I'm just at the beginning. I'd like to know why file are all compressed in Mp4 no matter what video format you choose...
no 4:3 format for anamorphic video format???
Hi thx for your setup Josh. I have noticed, that when I plug a external Monitor and turn HDMI Info ON - I can not see my focus enhancment when filming with manual focus - although its turned on. is this a bug?
You're welcome. No, I don't think you can see focus peaking over HDMI.
Question here . Did someone had problems with the 60p videos? I can see everything in 24p in my pc but an error occurs when trying to open anything in 60p
You can’t play back the video recording 10 bit 422 unless you have the paid version of Davinci resolve
Hey brotha, great video. I was wondering, how do you get to the true frame rates of 24, 60, and 120fps? I canʻt seem to find them; my fx30 only shows 23.98, 59.94, and etc. Cheers!
24 is really 23.98, 30 is really 29.97, etc. It's just what it shows on the screen.
Hi Josh, why you disabled the wind noise reduction on the camera? Then if I go to a windy place, the audio recording won't be clear or having interferences right ? because whatever audio device I use will be connected to the camera, or are you saying if I have a good audio recorder, it will take care of the wind reduction? but do you think there will be double effect, if I keep that settings in the camera, along with an additional wind noise reduction setting in audio recording device as well, please advise
I don't want the camera doing any audio processing. I address wind physically by using a deadcat on my microphone.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks, that helps
I have a stop & stop record handle which works with my A7V & A7111 I don’t see a input for this stop & record cable for the FX30?
What sort of cable does it use? The FX30 has a USB C port.
I move from photography to videography. Can I ask how can I use shortcut for exposure compensation in video mode? I find it very inconvenient to dig deep into the menu for changing the exposure compensation value, espcially when it's recording a footage. Thanks!
In video cameras we don't really use exposure compensation as in photography. This is not a variable you should be changing.
I realize your comment is many months old, but figured I’d chime in. You can assign exposure compensation to one of the command wheels. I’ve chosen the back one. I prefer to shoot in auto ISO and control exposure via exposure compensation. It makes it so easy in uncontrolled lighting situations. Good luck!
@@RandumbTech Thanks for your thoughts. I feel a bit more familiar with the operations now..
Can I use Elgato cam link 4k for my fx3? Please help thank you.
Yes, absolutely.
Hi Josh. I just bought the fx30 and I'm following your set up. I'm left a bit confused though. I want to use XVAC HS 4K, but I'm in the PAL region and there are only two frame rate options. 50p and 100p. Oh no! So no 25p. So now I don't know what to do. Should I not use XVAC HS and instead go for XVAC S 4K? Or should I shoot in 50p (Not sure I like that though)? Or should I use the NTSC region setting and get XVAC HS 4K in 24p. The last option seems easy enough, but then again I'll probably run into trouble when there is artificial light. I don't know what is the best way forward. Please help :-)
Well if you want 24 or 25 fps then don't film in 50 fps. All of those codecs are fine, it's really personal preference.
so is there a way to bake the lut into the slog footage ?
I believe so. Turn log shooting off and select PPLUT1 under picture profiles.
You speak about using a gray card. Do you use aX-Rite target card
This is the one that I use: geni.us/7M2nA
@joshsattin dude how are youusing 24p in xavc hs? I have version 2.00 and I can only use 24p in dci? And if you look it up online on Sonys website the guide seems to indicate you can only shoot 24p in dci? Please help
Before the update with the DCI option, the camera said 24 fps but it was really recording 23.98 fps. It just showed 24p on the screen.
@@Josh_Sattin ah ok I kind figured cause a few articles state the dci was released to allow for true 24fps
Hi, Josh. Can I ask you a question? So, I just got my FX30 yesterday. Why do I only have 25p, 50p and 100p frame rate options on my camera? there should be a choice of 24p, 30p, 60p, 120p as you described.
Are there any other settings that affect it?
Your are in PAL mode and need to switch to NTSC.
@@Josh_Sattin wow thanks. You are absolutely right. This is my first time entering the Sony ecosystem, I still have a lot to learn.
You're welcome. Good luck and have fun!
Hi Josh,
How can you set 24 fps on the hevc HS codec? I can only choose 23,98. please help! Thanks Marco
When you select 24fps it is actually 23.98fps. This is what you want in most situations.
I have a question.... If you are filming in Slog cine and flexible ISO, should you set you actual ISO to automatic as if you set it to the base 800 it stays on 800 and doesn't adjust exposure on the fly.
If you are in Cine EI you can only set the ISO to either of the bases (800 or 12,800) and you can't set it to auto.
At about 37 seconds in this video you talk about setting auto power off to high to keep cam from overheating. On page 397 of my sony FX30 manual it states “Sets the temperature of the camera at which the camera turns off automatically during shooting. When it is set to [High], you can continue shooting even when the temperature of the camera gets hotter than normal.” Does that imply the camera will continue shooting even though its getting hotter? I wonder what the shutoff temp difference is between the two settings.
Pretty much yes. If you set the temp setting to high, the camera will allow itself to run hotter before shutting down, giving you longer run times.
Hi Josh. Does Sony FX30 record in 1080p 10bit 4:22 10bit in 120fps ? Or does it just record in 8bit 1080p 120fps just like Sony a7iv ?
You can find all of the bitrates, codecs and frame rate info here: www.sony.com/electronics/support/camcorders-and-video-cameras-interchangeable-lens-camcorders/ilme-fx30/specifications
What’s the difference between Log Shooting ( flexible iso , cine ei quick , cine ei) and the Picture Profiles? Are they related or independent?
Log Shooting is just a visualization tool while recording ? It’s doesn’t change the result in the video ? It’s like a preview? Like an assistant? Or does it work applying a logarithmic curve to the footage?
Here is a full explanation of Cine EI: czcams.com/video/oAM1RRcGuss/video.html
@@Josh_Sattin thank you your video really helped a lot
How long does the battery last with high monitor brightness and 4k 120
I have not tested that.
Can't we use the touch screen for all the settings?
I didn't use the touch screen during this demonstration so you could see the screen.
someone please help lol... I just bought the fx30 & it won't let me use AUTOFOCUS on Movie Mode. Anytime I try it says "Invalid with this lens. if the lens has an af/mf switch perform it that way" which I don't have the option on the lens - it was designed to be done digitally so something seems wrong seeing as my autofocus works just fine when I switch to manual mode... even my autofocus starts to work temporarily when I switch back to movie mode but switches back to MF on its own after time or if I go into the menus.
Which lens are you using?
Can you record HD 4:2:2 10 bit in normal SD card?
It depends on the type of SD card that you have. Here are all of the requirements: helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2220/v1/en/contents/TP0002911140.html
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks
I'm trying to carefully match all my settings to the ones you lay out here for Flexible ISO. On my FX3, it seems to indicate that the lowest ISO without those lines above and below is 640, not 800. Does that mean my base ISO is 640 on this? Or am I messing up some other setting? Also, it doesn't indicate on the list of ISO options where the higher base ISO is. I'm assuming still 800 / 12800?
On the FX3 Flexible ISO has bases of 640/12800 while in Cine EI it's 800/12800. I don't know why exactly, but that's what it is.
"Hello, friend, tell me why the continuous AF function is always turned off for me, even though I use both autofocus and manual focus, but I can't select it?"

So weird, when I go to XAVC HS 4k, I can only choose 50 or 100p. Where is the 25p?!?!
Mine is the same and I’m using a type a card so I’m confused…
You don't say what the "active" setting is in the image stabilization setting. You blow over that so fast, and I'm not thrilled with "standard" as the setting, and really needed to know this. I guess active is a stronger setting?
Active is IBIS (physical sensor shift stabilization) plus electronic stabilization.
why is my file so large any advice
You can change the bitrate by changing it from S-I to either S or HS.
What to do to see how long the camera has been used plese rply
that is a lot of options... (newby)
Why does my frames rates show 25 -50-100 ???
You are in PAL mode and need to switch to NTSC.
Quick update if anyone's confused about the dependency between this video's frame rate options and those using firmware 2.0+.
In this video the options are shown as 24, 60, and 120p. In firmware 2.0 they now show as 23.98, 59.94, an 119.88. Turns out this is (probably) to better align with that's actually being captured. For example my GoPro's 24p option is actually capturing 23.98.
This is not to be confused with 2.0's 4K DCI mode feature, which in that mode is a legitimate 24p.
How do i change my firmware to the previous?
