Funny to see "foreign animation" when some of them are beloved childhood memory for so many people in my country (France)
Yeah, like foreign to who? Such a stupid title.
That's because the person publishing this is probably american
@@xunto.vorlov by foreign, the title probably means non-american and non-japanese because there are already videos filled up with shots from Disney and japanese anime
@@Amantducafe bro he's vietnamese
So many french animation
I love how there is that style of drawing and animation that you can immediately notice as European. They have existed from the earliest days of newspaper art and have evolved till today's big budget movies. Especially the shadowing of characters and the use of colors.
Good eye, thanks for pointing that out
Plenty of movies I this clip are made out of europe though
“A drawing is the purest form of art, whether you are old or young, man or woman, black or white or blue or green, the things we draw are the closest we will come to representing our dreams and thoughts. If drawings are the purest form of art, then animation is the purest form of storytelling…”
idk if im supposed to believe you actually made this but damn i agree
@@gatsbymaguire I mean, I don’t know if someone has said it before me, but thanks !
To disagree with Truth would make of me; a Fool. I agree compleatly
I was going to like this, but quoting yourself is just pretentious.
@@senbontorii2680 it wasn’t my intention
This is why I think foreign films (American here) is exceedingly meeting much more critical acclaim than what the US could produce now, especially with how all plastic looking much of animated movies look. That’s not to say that they’re poorly designed, but it’s refreshing to see something not completely made by computers and nice to see it hand drawn
Edit: also just wanted to add that another problem with the American animation industry is that they don’t like to produce animations unless it’s: Childrens movies aimed at younger audiences or trashy adult comedies in the vein of family guy or whatever, where as foreign movie studios use them to tell more mature and adult stories
Or handmade stop motion. I'd recommend pinchcliffe grand pri if you enjoy that kinda stuff. (And not because of national bias, none of that whatsoever)
I completely agree with that edit, one thing i love about my country (France) is that animated movies and shows always had mature storyline even if it was for children.
Not so fun fact: Most of these lost the Oscar for best animated feature for some Disney or Pixar movie
Let's be honest, Oscars are worthless. They were supposed to make the competition grow and be competitive, but it has become as stagnant as the american cartoons are nowadays.
The constant has shifted from "Valuing the greatest and most creative movie of the year" into a "guess which big company gets the prize".
@@mrbackup993 Awards shows in general. They'll never give an award that's not made by American's, making it entirely biased. I still remember Your Name lost to Boss Baby.
Most of these never got nominated at all. At least Annecy festival and Césars gave them recognition
@@JLacayWTF YOUR NAME IS BETTER????
Its time to ditch Oscars for anything.
Oscars do not have any inherent value other then just a shiny statue of nothing significant.
How on earth do I not recognize any of these? These look so absolutely stunning.
I know right? Out of them all I recognised about 2.
Non-Japanese Non-American animation is pretty much unknown. That's a shame since some countries do some really good movies, France in particular pulls out outstanding works and most of this video shows french films
@@captnsnackbeard6898one of them id Waltz with Bashir
im glad that "foreign" didn't just mean japanese. even if they are the so-called kings of animation, there's still so much talent everywhere else.
I definitely agree. I love Anime but I also appreciate animation from other countries.
They aren’t the kings of animation tbh (this isn’t to say their animation isn’t great tho)
@@koolkid9119 if Japan isn't the king of animation then I'm eager to know who you have in mind. They must be legendary if they somehow surpass the country that made Akira
@@DoNotFuss Please. Anime is a set of cookie cutters that everyone decided to use ad nauseam. It's a fucking disgrace.
@@SuperGman117 Anime is medium, what you just said could be said about any other medium. A "fucking disgrace" is what you see because you're not looking at the bigger picture and you're picking the trends that suit your bias.
I'm still waiting to know who this one of a kind king of animation is according to you guys. The implication is there but I've yet to hear the name of the one who's beating Japan.
Absolutely stoked to see Tom Moore’s stuff here. “The Secret of Kells” and “Song of the Sea” have been two of my favorite movies since I was a kid
Wolfwalkers is a masterpiece
same!!! i watched all these movies as a kid and theyve since become my favourite movies
Irish gang gang let's goooooo
The Secret Of Kells always had me.
I have seen some of these animated movies, they were truly touching and some even heart-breaking. Including "Persepolis", the story of Marjane Satrapi who had to leave Iran for good after the 1979 revolution. By the way, you seem to have forgotten to add the name "Persepolis" in the description.
Woah what they made a movie of Persepolis?? I have to see this now. I've only read the graphic novel.
@@pungetello it's not very good... it feels very rushed, and some of the plot points are wrobg in the timeline...
Italy and France literally gave childhood to the most of the girls
and boys
Foreign Animation is really underreated and overlooked. It deserves more love for sure.
Finally, an edit not biased towards some idealized past.
Traditional animation literally still one of greatest earlier version and even a legendary type of of animations.no wonder it doesn't die
If you want a cool Chinese one, there’s a film called ‘Have a Nice Day’ that was entirely animated by one guy
More realistic animation than the current 2015+ ones
Hmmm. For example?
Bruh
My favorite pre-2015 movie, Klaus
@@S3b0rg didn't that come out 2019
I dunno man Arcane was pretty good, and that was made by a french studio
the breadwinner was my favorite, both klaus and the breadwinner, ive read the book and watched the movie and it's absolutely beautiful
the breadwinner is a plagiarism of an afganistani film. That film deserves 0 recognition
Breadwinners on nickelodeon
@@kaliyuga1476 I’m pretty sure The Breadwinner was adapted from a novel of the same name
As a guy who loves animations in general this is soooo fucking beautiful
I love how they included kiriku even just for a moment, I still remember that movie from my childhood that many don’t talk about anymore
i love the fact that nearly every single shot of this video and these movies are aesthetically beautiful and made to be able to see and understand the story even without dialog or audio, it shows how much hidden potential the foreign world has to offer.
I remember watching watership down when I was a kid. The scenes where characters just simply died without warning really shocked me because I had never seen a film with such raw, instantaneous death like that.
I've seen a bunch of horrific stuff when I was a kid like horror movies and games but Watership Down truly did traumatize me for rabbits dying left and right and killing themselves like jeez.
Highly recommend “Persepolis” and “I lost my body” (French movies)
Most of them are amazing but I forgot their titles unfortunately...
It's movies like these that inspire me to create scenes from my own stories
Even though Disney, Pixar, and other American animated movie studios saturate the market with samey, sanitized, big budget products, maybe it's a good thing because it makes foreign film makers innovate and be creative to stand out.
amazing compilation! just a quick question, what are the movies at 0:18 (the swordsmen one) and 0:36 (the one with all the armed people wearing gas masks)? they look real interesting!
0:18
The Rabbi’s Cat
0:36
The Congress
It's a somewhat cool scene in an ontherwise very boring movie. The movie was made out of a comic which is wayyyy better and has the same art style. Go get it if you can find it in english "Le chat du rabbin" or "The Rabbi's cat". Takes place in 1930's Algeria.
@@isaacajv1583 ouais
I'm from India, and I've never heard about or seen these animations. But damn they look amazing. It's probably because some are French and European but these far exceed other American Animations in quality. This clearly points it out that the Europeans have been in the Animation Industry far longer than the Chinese and Japanese and still hold some presence there.
My favorite foreign animated movie as a kid was this French or Belgian movie called Panique au village. It was a stop motion movie.
I swear to god when I saw the witch from kirikou it sent a bolt of memories down my spine
Animation outside of America and Japan needs to get more attention
That...that's the kind of animated film that I prefer, because it's the first real animated film that I discovered from my childhood to my life. Not the Disney, Dreamworks, Illumination and others so yes I saw some from the start, but it's clearly his foreign films that I watched the most that I got the most attached to his universes that enters much better 2d-animation style. There is one of my favorite films in this list which for me is the perfect animation for one day an upcoming personal project.
I've never seen anyone else mention Azur and Asmar before. That was my favourite childhood movie but I forgot all about it. Thank you so much for bringing that back to me.
thank you for bringing these lovely animations to more people. I've only seen a few of them and am determined to watch all of the others! Also great editing!
Glad you include where is Anne frank and the Breadwinner I heavily enjoyed those movies
thank you so much for this. im gonna watch some of these now.
This felt surreal... the other animation ones I've seen, I was able to recognize the difference in quality. But this one genuinely triggered nostalgia for me. The short clips of films like Watership Down, Plague Dogs, Felidae and Persepolis brought back so much. I've gotta have a childhood movie marathon someday!
Lol i just started to watch some of these kind of movies after finding our persepolis and the breadwinner, thank you for creating this amazing video that i just found in my recommended after finishing those 2 movies, i hope to watch all of these talented animated movies and thanks for putting out to notice that these films should be recognized and watched
What’s crazy is all my life, I have felt a connection to Europe. I’ve dreamt of living in Ireland or Scotland specifically. And now there seems to be a booming animation industry in Ireland, at least more than before most likely due to studios like Cartoon Saloon. I’m an incoming animation major who starts my journey in five days. It feels like I’m being driven to go to a place like Ireland in the future, and live out my dreams of being a story artist.
thanks for finally making this ive been waiting for this specific type of video for years
I can't stop watching. Its so good!
Nice to see a frame from birdboy, that movie is so underrated it's painful. Seriously go watch it when you can, you will not be dissapointed
I remember when I stumbled on Birdboy's starting scene on some local channel one night I was awake and bored at 1 am. Man, that was a dark, twisted, crushing yet hopeful emotional rollercoaster that I didn't expect.
Glad you out Waltz With Bashir on this list, it's a true masterpiece.
I havent seen any of these , but in the future i could see a few of these animations
I watched so many of these at school (brazilian speaking) its great to see all of these different expressions of art on a comp like this
Trop bien! can't believe you put Marone here, one of my favorite movies, and so obscure.
More of this, please! Foreign animations are the best!
thanks for adding "Gatta cenerentola". Finaly someone recognise the modern italian animation and the wonderfull work of Alessandro Rak and Mad entrateinment
Do you know when in the video it is shown?
@@garbageman366 0:13\0:31
I hope Cartoon Saloon go on to make many more films and to shows in the future
This is why I love animation it shows a sought of surrealism of emotions and thought, beauty and language that we can properly show and express
Thank you for existing. Now i have a list to complete
Thanks for the list. I'm going to marathon them all today.
Watched Fantastic Planet over 10 years ago with a friend who was taken away too soon. Hit me a little bit when that scene flashed by.
Stoked to see that Ernest Et Celestine and Kirikou made the list!
So different expressive, stylized, artistic.
Love the fact you introduced italian works as well like Gatta Cenerentola and Enzo Dalò. Also amazing video, these movies deserve more recognition❤️
Marvelous. Going to watch every one of these
what a nice list you have, i will be sure to put it to good use
Seeing One Night In City woke a forgotten memory, thanks
These movies have more variety in them than every Disney movie combined
shoulda shown the really beautiful part of wolfwalkers where the golden wolf spirits make a ying yang spiral and its really smooth and satysfying to watch
The waves of nostalgia that hit me when watching this.
Good to see Marcell Jankovics getting some recognition outside his homeland! Great video!
I love that England’s contribution in this are terrifying murderous rabbits and a shotgun blast to the face.
This is so good. So many pieces of media outside America or Japan deserve recognition.
AWESOME AND AMAZING! As always!
That moment when you realize you watched more than half of the related adult animation list😅
I like it
I watched it over and over again
It is a bit sad how one country got to decide that every other film that they didnt produce was considered to be foreign.
Great to see our Irish animation getting some love
most these are films from my childhood! im so glad to see them shown in this video
even if its only just a few short moments, im so glad that fantastic planet is getting even a sliver of the recognition it deserves, that movie is killer. same thing with loving vincent, which is one of my favourite movies ever
This vidoe makes me so emotional
It's been 6 months ever since I saw a my little dark age edit because most of then were unoriginal. THIS ONE IS SO UNIQUE! Good job👌
good to know that more little dark age edits are doing away with pessimistic comparisons and focusing more on celebrating the good stuff.
0:34 It wasnt fun realizing as a kid that this wasnt a cute bunny movie...
THAT'S SO WONDERFUL! VERY COOL!!!
Hey there! Although I enjoyed the video, I really wish that the amazing Nahuel And The Magic Book was in it! Also, do you know the name of the movie scene at 0:47? Just curious.
Im so glad i was on Anifilm to see some of these master pieces
this is so beautiful man....
ALL MY FAVOURITES OH MY GOD KIRIKU AND THE TRIPLETS AND PERSEPOLIS AND
AUHUDFHJD THIS FEELS LIKE SUCH A LOVE LETTER I'm not getting emotional over a video IM NOT
moments of childhood that cannot be returned
It's so nice to see some hungarian animations!! Awesome video💖
I remember watching "Azur & Asmar" when I was small and it was and still is so good. It feels like childish dream with such a unique style and a story that is basically a fairy tale.
birdboy is the best animated film i've ever watched, insanely excited for unicorn wars
YOINK! -- the sound of me copying this list of films into a notepad for future viewing. Also: THOINKS!
Didn't thought I'd see Waltz and Bashir here, very good watch
This is defo going in my LDA playlist
So good!
I’ve seen some of these movies, they really have that artistic touch to them, it doesn’t feel like a corporate copy, it has *real* human emotion.
So fun to see Kirikou! I watched it all the time as a kid.
1:35 Romania mentioned 🗣🗣
i needed this
I saw Capitan Avispa in there. Such an amazing film. My country should be proud for this movie.
I'm actually surprised with how many of central and eastern European animations I saw as a child in TV. Shoutouts from Brazil
man i love so many of these movies
something about foreign animation makes it so much better
also love that there was a canadian film and i guess that makes sense coming from an american pov
I recommend watching "Тайна третьей планеты (The Mystery/secret of the Third planet)".
Absolutely beautiful, I’m sorry it’s not the original song.
I prefer this version
@@Mikay3218 what is the name?
I come to watch these memes for recommendations and see some cool animated movies I've never seen
That's a nicely-crafted palmares! I don't know if you've added series too, but I would've put in Lastman as well.
Obrigado, isso me ajudou a encontar filmes que eu buscava a muito tempo.........
not a single anime, thank you
