Once appropriately placed in the flower bed or hanging basket, deadheading spent blooms and keeping the soil moist is the basis of annual begonia care. Watering correctly is important in the care of begonias. Soil should remain moist, but not too wet. A well-draining soil or potting mix simplifies this task.
Are begonias easy to grow?
Begonias are an easy houseplant for beginners, with a range of species and selections for the more advanced gardeners. Some are grown for flowers, others for their foliage. They come in a range of sizes, shapes, and habit, from upright to spreading. Many tolerate low light, and they have few if any pests.
What are the best growing conditions for begonias?
In cooler areas, begonias can tolerate more sun than in hot climates. Most like bright, dappled light to grow their best. Soil Conditions: Begonias grow best in light, fertile, well-drained soil. Begonias are very susceptible to root and stem rot when exposed to cold, wet soils, so proper drainage is essential
Do begonias like sun or shade?
Morning sun (and a little afternoon shade) is perfect. Wax begonias can tolerate more sun than other types, and the ones with bronze-colored leaves are the most sun-tolerant of all. Tuberous begonias prefer more shade and less heat, so we often see them on display in late summer. Soil: Light, rich, humusy soil
Begonia Care
Some need partial shade; others perform well in full sun. Fertilize your begonias with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the active growing season in summer. Begonias should be grown in well-drained soil, and it's best to allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
Do begonias do well in pots?
Begonias are tropical perennials that thrive in warmth and, typically, partial light. ... Tuberous begonias are suitable options for begonia container gardens as they work well with the light texture of potting mix, and they work as bedding plants, too. These types of begonias are either upright or trailing
Do you deadhead begonias?
do not require deadheading to thrive. Rather they self-clean by dropping spent flowers on their own. However, if you want to clean up your begonias a bit faster than nature does, or if you want to encourage the plant to produce more stems, you should get into the habit of deadheading
What is the best fertilizer for begonias?
Begonias thrive on fertilizers that deliver consistent and balanced amounts of nutrients. Fertilizers such as 10-10-10 fertilizer contain 10 percent of each of the macronutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
Why are my begonias dying?
Begonias with constantly wet leaves are susceptible to bacterial leafspot, which causes wilting and leaf loss. ... Decrease watering so the begonias' soil dries out between watering sessions. Begonia plants do not like very wet soil, and too much soil moisture can cause the plants' roots to rot
Are begonias poisonous to dogs?
Begonias are considered to be poisonous to dogs and cats by the ASPCA . This plant contains insoluble oxalates which provide its toxicity. Insoluble oxalates are derived from oxalic acid, which is one of the strongest organic acids found in plants and fungi. According to the ASPCA, tubers are the most toxic to dogs. - Jak na to + styl

Tky for the information on the Bigonna
Love your begonias!!!
Thanks for the video, it gave me confidence to grow Rieger Begonia indoor. Love the blooms. 🙂
wonderful, good luck to you..
Thankyou for the good info!!😁
You're welcome.. happy you stopped by!
Thank you for all this knowledge really helpful.. keep flowering ❤
Thank you, I will
pretty
thank you..
I've got my first ever begonia plant 😲😬 for mother's day and so did my sister and my mom so I'm coming to you for help in taking care of them because I've never had them before
nice gift.. and a good choice.. hope the video helped! ❤
Thanks Diane I love the ever blooming begonias! I've seen them in different nurseries but never bought them. I always buy the wax begonias which are smaller but they bloom their hearts out. Those can be grown inside too. I grow them outside in pots and the deer leave them alone. They don't seem to attract bugs 🐜 r slugs either. Like your channel. Happy gardening!
Hi Pat, thank you... yes I believe the wax are probably the most popular for outdoor planting... keep a tidy plant growth , which many are looking for , for edging and more... wish you good gardening season.. 🌺👍☀
Have you done an update?
My son bought me one for mother's day . I've never had these plants before. Your video was very informative. Thank you.
No updates available..
Beautiful. I live in the PNW and I plant begonias in my shop window boxes with lime green potato vines and diamond uphorbias in a dappled shade That goes into shade. The window box that is in shade my begonias struggle every year. Thinking to redesign them with coleus’s in the shade with similar leaf color to the begonias that I place in the dappled shade window boxes. I struggle growing plants on this side of my shop even in the garden path that is across from the window boxes. Every year I plant and loose plants. Even my hostas. I’ve mulched the area every spring. I believe it is too rocky and to many tree roots.
I believe it is too rocky and to many tree roots: could possibly be the issue.. I know begonias are tricky even for me.. I have had good luck with the angel wing begonias.. thanks for sharing your experience Tina.. ( I have a daughter named Tina) :)
Hi from Ecuador
Hello Janeth, thanks for watching.. 🌹🌺👍
Very good information! Thank you so much for sharing. Diane my neighbor recently bought a begonia and it looks terrible. It has yellow spots all over the leaves. He has it on the east side of his house. Could it be he is watering it too much? Night temperatures here in Wheatridge, Co. are about in the upper 40’s.
Thank You Margaret! They prefer daily temperatures around 75 degrees Fahrenheit and overnight lows in the mid-60s, but they can often tolerate higher temperatures with protection from harsh sun rays.
What causes begonia leaves to yellow?
Most likely, yellow leaves appearing on your Begonia is caused by overwatering, allowing soil to stay soggy, or letting the plant sit in water. ... Allow the soil to dry about halfway, or 2-4 inches down before watering again. If the soil is kept too wet for too long, the roots may rot.
hope this helps..
Thank you, for this video. I had never considered growing them indoors. I grow them in pots outdoors, for the last three years. If you grow them indoors, do they still go dormant? I have tried to save the bulbs one year indoors in the garage, but I didn't do something correctly, and I wasn't able to bring them back from their bulbs the following Spring.
Provided the conditions are right.. Generally, fibrous and rhizomatous begonias make excellent houseplants while tuberous begonias can be grown as houseplants but have a harder time surviving due to the need for higher humidity and light than the other two kinds. ... Begonias grown indoors are especially susceptible to root rot and overwatering.
I have never tried these. I've only grown the usual ones you see at the nurseries every spring. Do you start yours from seed, or purchase plants? I would love to try them!
I did purchase these plants.. not sure they are available in seed.. there is so many new begonias coming out.. just love them... yes try them if you can find them , they have a really pretty flower..
Thank you, really helpful video. I am thinking to plant them in high rise north facing building. Would it be OK?
HI, depends on the lighting.. not sure it will be enough indoors..you can sure try and move if need to..
I just bought some today all sorts of colours. Can I keep them in the pots over winter inside or will the tubers rot?
If the conditions are right I would try.. I think mine got too wet and didn't make it..:(
Right after your last video on Begonia's I found 3 different Rex Begonia's. I have some 10/10/10 fertilizer but not in liquid is it okay to use? Thanks for sharing 🌸🌸
Hi , is it time released ? if so you can incorporate in the soil or top dress and mix in top of the soil..
@@dianemummvideos Yes it is timed released. Thanks
I have some begonias in a large pot. They are growing and sprouting. Should I put more dirt around the stem to keep them from bending? Their not bending now just growing straight up with some tiny flowers.
You can now or later to help support them.. good luck!
Hi can you tell the size of this pot? The video was very helpful thank you.
If I remember right around 12inches
Hi Diane,I like your Begonia where I can avail that kind of Begonia. How about seeds?can I buy?
You should be able to find around your area.. no seeds... good luck!
Would these begonias grow in southeast Texas? We have hot humid summers. Can I grow them in my house in the window where it's air conditioned?
The wax-leaf begonia (Begonia x semperflorens-cultorum) is a desirable blooming plant for Texas landscapes because they tolerate sun and shade as well as temperature extremes. It is a perennial plant along the coastal regions of Texas and grown as an annual in the rest of the state.
Do they come back every year .and form tubers underneath
yes they do!
How do u save them over winters?
you can try and bring indoors...
My begonia got frost damaged. It lost most of its leaves but the bottom of the stems and the lower leaves are okay. How can I help it back to health?
Hi as long as there is a few leaves left I would take off all the frozen area and it should grow new shoots .. Keep moist but not too wet.. give some good lighting.. and hope for the best.. darn frost!
Can cut and grow
ok, good luck to you!
Is it Sun loving?
For my area morning sun , afternoon shade... we get pretty warm here in summer months..
Diane, is it okay to put a light shredded bark mulch on top of the soil after I plant my begonias?
Hi Leanne, Since begonias are susceptible to rot due to wet conditions, mulching should be done cautiously. Use bark mulch around plants to preserve soil moisture and prevent weeds from growing. Keep mulch a few inches away from the succulent begonia stems to prevent them from rot.
What are the requirements to grow these? Care secrets?
Brandon I have a lot of info in the description area of this video
