  • On Friday, April 1, 2016, April Fools Day, my mom and I went up to Berea, OH to do some railfanning. Experienced some rain at some point during the day, but didn't stop us from railfanning. Was a pretty good day on both mainlines. Enjoy this hour-long video!
0:03 - CSX Q158 approaching slowly on the left with NS B14 waiting on the right at CP 194. Freshly repainted CSX AC4400 #260 leads Q158. After his head end passes, a westbound CSX manifest, I believe was L393, heads in the opposite direction with a Tier 4 ET44AH leading an SD40-2. This would be the first of 4 Tier 4's we would see today. Q158 later comes to a stop to wait for clearance into Collinwood.
8:25 - NS B14 comes thru 194 after getting permission past the stop boards, as seen through the gap between the stack cars on Q158.
9:08 - We have two westbounds at once. NS 21Z comes first thru 194 with four GEs, and then an unknown westbound CSX stack train passes the stopped eastbound led by another Tier 4 GEVO.
14:20 - Q158 starts to move after getting a signal.
19:59 - Next up is eastbound CSX/CP stack train Q166, today being powered by CP 8635 and 8936, as it follows Q158 into Collinwood. As soon as 166 clears, eastbound NS 26W comes by with a short train, and an open door on the lead Dash-9!
24:28 - NS 16G next comes east thru CP 194 with a CN C40-8W trailing second in the lashup.
    27:55 - NS 24M eastbound at Berea.
30:06 - NS local L13 arrives from Bellevue headed to Rockport with two SD40-2s for power, and a nice horn show. Earlier, I missed catching eastbound CSX Q384 led by AC6000CW 602, the "Spirit of Waycross", as my mom and I went to get lunch.
33:37 - Next we get a three-way meet at Berea. First is eastbound CSX Q260-01 powered by 7 locomotives, with Tier 4 3279 leading 7910, 439, 8601, 6448, 2212 and 7908. At the same time, NS 14N approaches on the right, and as Q260 clears, 21Q heads west passing 14N.
    40:15 - NS train 779.
43:40 - NS 20E with a Big Lots trailer near the end of the train.
48:12 - CSX K681 heads west passing BE Tower as rain begins to fall.
50:27 - The westbound version of the CP runthrough stack train, Q165-01, is next not far behind K681. Leading today's train is CP 8939, the Strathcona's engine. A short cut of tank cars and covered hoppers bring up the rear of the train.
52:47 - Right after Q165 clears, NS 287 heads west past the tower with a CSX C40-8W leading an NS SD60M. Sorry for the raindrops.
54:21 - As the rain continues pouring, CSX Q008 heads east on Track 1 thru Berea. Again, sorry for all the raindrops on the lens.
57:06 - CSX K682 with UP power (photo)
    57:12 - CSX Q268 (photo)
57:17 - Fresh SD60E leading NS 426 at Sheldon Rd. (photo)
57:22 - The rain has stopped and the sun makes another appearance as two NS eastbounds are stopped side-by-side at CP 194. On the right is train 60E led by Savannah & Atlanta 1065, which unfortunately will not be through during my time here as the crew has tied the train down and waiting for a cab to take them down to Rockport. Three CN engines are trailing 1065.
57:39 - L13 seen earlier is now returning west to Bellevue with Admiral Cab SD40-2 3321 leading the way now.
1:01:04 - CSX Q017 westbound. Sorry for the muffled audio.
1:03:32 - CSX garbage train Q710-31 bound for Russell, KY, approaches Berea. After Q710 clears, NS 18N, I believe, heads east thru CP 194. Again, sorry for the muffled audio.
1:07:46 - With the battery low on my camera, I only took photos of Q157 meeting Q148 with a Tier 4 trailing.
    Thanks for watching!

Awesome video! I need to visit this place one day it looks like the perfect place to watch trains. I do have a question that i've been wondering about for many years that I bet you can answer. Is Berea tower where the CSX chicago line starts heading east and the NS chicago line starts heading west? I know somewhere around Cleveland theres a point where the line changes owners because my uncle lives in Mentor and it's CSX there and my wife is from Sandusky and it's NS there. I'm guessing the CSX trains head south at some point to get on the old B&O chicago line i'm guessing in Fostoria? And the NS trains must transfer to the old Conrail pennsy line that runs to horseshoe curve?

The real April Fools was at 2:43, where you missed that Tier-4 and SD40-2 combo because of that intermodal.
