I'm traditional a notes player. I was a keyboard player to begin with. For that reason, I'm less hard on pattern players than many people are. If you're like me, and not good at playing by pattern, you realize just how important patterns really are. You can have all the theory in the world, like I do, and still be S OL when it comes to getting the notes correct if you don't have patterns. I haven't been playing in 25 years, so I've just started practicing heavy again for the last month. I really appreciate how you do describe patterns. I'm completely blind, and so don't read tablature. But I've been going over the circle of fourth exercises, reminds me of college. Doing it all over again now. And I could see, looking back, just how important patterns really are. So if you're a pattern player out there, don't be down on yourself. You might need to learn theory, but many of us who know theory really do need to brush up on our patterns. Fingering is also important on base, just like it is on keyboards or anything else.
