  • My kid has a 2006 Solara SLE convertible that had an original JBL radio with a nice tape deck and CD changer. He wanted bluetooth, but we also added CarPlay and a backup camera.
This video walks through the materials and step-by-step process of removing the dash and old radio then adding a new Boss BE62CP radio with a much-needed backup camera.
I describe my Crutchfield Ready Harness that keeps the steering wheel and Fade and Balance controls, compare the 2 available Solara Double DIN trim kits, wire a DIYBypass, and add a new USB port for wired Apple CarPlay.
NOTE: I am not a CZcams pro, so any camera work will have to be tolerated.
    Materials in this video:
Crutchfield BE62CP-C Radio plus camera kit
    Crutchfield Ready Harness Service, including:
    - Metra TYTO-01 Harness (Keeps Fade and Balance)
    - ASWC-1 Steering Wheel controls
    - Metra 70-8114 (simple plug-in Steering Wheel controls)
Metra 99-8212 vs. Scosche TA2087B Trim Kits
PAC - 6' USB Extension Cable with Dash Mount
    DIYBypass

Just bought a new-to-us 2007 Solara convertible and about to install a new CarPlay receiver and rear-view camera. I really appreciate the detailed and clear walkthrough here Hanick Fam. Thank you!

Good luck! I hope your install goes/went well. The ready harness really helped make the wiring easy, but the trim kits are a pain on this install. My son’s Corolla was super easy, since there was a cheap aftermarket offering that replaced everything as a one piece unit. No such luck with the Solara.
One other piece of advice - remove the black cover under the back window and clean out any debris trapped there against the soft top. This is a primary place that leaks can get started…

@@harnickfam1857 Were you able to get fade control? I didn't pick up the exact unit you did (got a JVC), but Crutchfield rep said that there's not a way to install aftermarket parts and still get fade control but not sure that's true.

@@beelerspace sorry for the delay. We have fade control from the crutchfield kit…we paid a bit extra for it among the various choices they had

I've done this a few times on 04-08 Solaras. Something to note for your viewers: the reverse light is totally different on the 07-08 models because they moved it to the bumper instead of the array by the brake lights. BUT, the good news is, there's actually an easy to reach wire on part of a harness under the glove box! No need to tap the reverse light in the trunk, you can trigger it from right there and tap the cable on the harness. I didn't bother to go back and look if that harness is the same on the 04-06, if I ever do another Solara in those years I'll check it out.
The other thing to note: The rear seat is stupidly easy to pop up. Not the back, but the bottom. It's literally just some large plastic clips holding it down. Pull upward HARD, and it pops out. Makes running the wire to the back for the trunk much easier, and no metal wire hanger to scratch up the aging leather on it. You can also find points to zip tie it down there and keep it in place. I strongly recommend that.
Otherwise, pretty spot on video! Bravo!

Thanks for the video! Good breakdown on the steps necessary for the upgrade.
Something of note that has nothing to do with your installation: I saw some cracking on the dashboard during your video. Toyota had a recall for Solara dashboards due to a problem with manufacturing. You may want to check with Toyota to see if your car qualifies for a replacement dashboard.
    Good luck.

Do you think this would work pretty much the same on a 2007 Solara SLE convertible?

reverse light is in a different position. There's a wire that gets activated for reverse under the glove box you can tap into much more easily. Otherwise you need to take off the bumper.

Overall happy. Once in a while, the reverse camera does not immediately come on. Occasionally, sounds fails to play in stereo for a brief glitch. Still better than the stock situation for sure.

Does the screen on the unit dim or go into night mode when you turn on your headlights?

    • @harnickfam1857
      @harnickfam1857  Před 5 měsíci

I think no. The default is not too distracting though. It does lower the volume when you put it in reverse, which is nice.
