- Meet an incredibly rare and beautiful 1964 vintage Model 336 Marlin, chambered in the potent 35 Remington, and learn a bit about the history of the two that have been serving American hunters for nearly a century and a quarter.
I really loved this. In 1972 I had saved enough money from working on a local dairy farm to buy my first rifle. A marlin 336c in 35 rem. As you , half my wage went into the household. A portion went to school cloths ,the rest I saved for my rifle. My father gave the local dealer the nod , on my behalf as in ,that's my boy and he will be good to his word. So for 10 bucks ,I was able to lay my rifle away. Every week on Friday I took my weekly take after what I owed the household. And buy Sept 30th I owned that rifle. My first deer with it came the same year. A shot of 7 yards. Talk about being the cock of the walk. My father and mother and bothers all thanked me in turn for the fine meal that my trusty 35 brought to the table. In 1977 I joined the air force in EOD. 8 years later I was out working as a sheriff's deputy. The little 35 was traded for a 280 rem. Years later another marlin 35rem came along and I tumbled to it. Always wishing I still had the rifle I left go. Looking back over the 200 hundred plus deer I've been blessed with since my first season in 1972. There is not a single deer that could not of taken with my 35. My longest shot in over 40 years has been a whopping 110 yards. That's only because he stepped into a logging road at that distance. All the rest anywhere from 7 to 50 yards. It's where I hunt. North eastern PA timber., the 94 win and 336 marlin are still a very common sight here. Loved the story.

My dad was given a 336 in .35 Remington in 1955 for his graduation present. When I was old enough to hunt deer, he gave it to me. I'm in my 60s and I have never used any other rifle for deer and bear hunting. At 50 yards that gun shoots 1 inch groups with 200 grain Silvertips.
I wish more people would give these old time tested proven cartridges and firearms the respect they’re due. If you mention 30-30 in a hunting community they Look at you in bewilderment as if the bullet may bounce off a deer
I have enough testimony from people I trust to believe that the 30-30, or even 5.56 do not bounce off a deer. Even on a mil base... Upper brass liked deer for dinner too...
35 Remington is easy to load for, and very enjoyable to shoot. The recoil is more of a push than a snap and is more comfortable than 30-30 recoil. It’s fans swear by it for putting deer down in their tracks.
It’s the same when I tell people I carry a .22 mag revolver in my pocket; they act like I carry a pellet gun. It’s lightweight, accurate, and will pierce anything it needs to should it ever be needed.
I've always said in my area more food has been put on tables with 30-30 and 303 brit than any powerful/fast "modern" cartridges including moose.
Nowadays people figure they need a cannon for moose lol
The .30-.30 is a favorite in WV where we hunt. It’s a great brush gun that is quick to aim. Open sights are great out to 125 yards, which is typically the max distance you will need for a white tail in the WV hills/forest.

I too had a paper route.
The route was on a very hilly area. So my sisters boyfriend loaned me a 3 speed Schwinn to pull the bike trailer full of papers with.
The bike and trailer were stolen from out front of my house.
I didn't make any money and all I Got was some life lessons.
But i eventually moved to Colorado and worked hard to become a good Cow Hand. And bought a Winchester big bore 94 in 375 win. That was a Nice gun.
But like seemingly every young Man i sold it. And wish that i still owned it.

I was given my Great Grandfather's 336 SC in 35 Rem that he purchased new in 1953. Worked up a load for it and it groups way better than it should. Took a doe with it this past season at 50 yards in the kneeling position. She fell where she stood. Wish manufactures and customers could see you don't need a fire breathing dragon of a cartridge for most hunting situations. Great gun, great cartridge.

Man, you take me back to my early teen years. I also had a paper route, and rode the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh on my Schwinn with front and rear baskets carrying the papers. I saved up my route money for my first gun, a Winchester Model 12. Eventually, and regretfully, I sold that gun. Recently, I purchased another, and i am once again taking pheasants with it. Aside from Jesus and family, hunting memories are the best!

I bought a 1964 336 in .35 Rem two years ago. Always wanted a lever gun to hunt in the woods. Absolutely love the gun and have taken two deer with it. It's my go-to rifle for my stands that present a shot of 100 yds or less.
I've spent years trying to aquire a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington and finally found a sporting carbine from '50 in "waffle top" form. Sends a 200 gn. projectile @ 2225 f.p.s. at the muzzle. Can't wait for this year's deer season !
My family has a Remington 760 (dad's) and two Marlin 336s in .35 Remington. We also have two Marlin 336 in .30-30. They have *all* put a *lot* of deer in our freezers, especially that 760 of dad's, which has now been passed down to me.

Just purchased a marlin 336 in the 35 Remington manufactured in 1975. I purchased it for $200 it wasn’t in the best of shape and needed some TLC. However after a good restoration now looks as good as it did back in 75 and is now one of most prized leaver guns. It’s an absolute dream to shoot and has found it’s new forever home to be passed on to the grand kids someday. God bless you and thank you for another great video.

I just purchased a 1981 336 in 30-30 from a coworker. His father owned it originally, and he had scratched the number of deer he had taken into the stock!
"Schwinn bikes, the quality bikes, are best," or so Captain Kangaroo told us. My lever action experience didn't start out as well as yours. I bought my first one in the late 70s, a Marlin 1894 in 44 Magnum. It would not cycle reliably. My gunsmith had to polish the lifter to get it to work. I later sold it and bought a Rossi Puma 357. The action was rough, so I eventually sold it and acquired a Miroku made Browning 92 in 44 Magnum. It was slick as glass and I still have it. I stayed away from Marlin lever guns until 2007 when I bought an 1895 Guide rifle in 45-70. Shortly after that purchase Marlin was sold to Remington and everything went south for a while. I had wanted a 336, but did not wish to purchase a Remlin, so I located a 1950s vintage flat top rifle without the cross-bolt safety. It was in 35 Remington, a cartridge I had long been curious about. I fitted it with a Skinner rear peep sight and it now serves as one my bear guns. The action is smooth as silk. Because it isn't pristine I don't mind using it as truck gun either. Yours is gorgeous and the wood is nicer than anything I've ever seen on a Marlin.

I inherited an old 336 in 35 remington. My gun has a shorter magazine tube and is fitted with a peep sight. Very elegant gun.

Great story. I delivered the last Philadelphia Bulletin in 1982 from my 20” BMX bike. I also had 80 houses to deliver to. I was 14 years old. I also have a Marlin 336 in 30-30 I was given by my dad in 1979 for my first deer hunt.

At the age of 18, and barely 120 pounds, my grandfather's Remington Model 81 Woodsmaster chambered in 35 Rem. was the first rifle I ever shot. I swear it felt like my head and shoulder had been severed clean off my body.
I had a used Model 8 in 35 Rem that was a gift from my father-in-law (an avid gun collector). It was amazingly accurate, but it wouldn’t cycle properly. A gunsmith said the bolt was broken and that parts were non-existent. I returned it to my father-in-law and he promptly gave me a Model 81 in 300 Savage. It’s an interesting piece but it’s just not the same as shooting that 35 Rem.
A modified version of the rifle in 35 Rem (with a fixed 10 rd magazine) was used by law enforcement officers to take down Bonnie and Clyde. That was a huge amount of firepower and the condition of the vehicle after the ambush proved it.
I think those models were just made to marry up with the 35 Rem cartridge. It was just a perfect round for that design. And it will drop any game on the planet.

I wanted you to know that my daughter recently started shooting and I directed to a bushel full of your videos to get her started off correctly.
She got a new Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm. She watched your new gun break in, cleaning, aiming videos, and many more. We went to the range for the first time and she was on target 8 on target seven of her first eight rounds. We could not shoot more than 2 rounds of eight because ammo is very hard to obtain here.
So Sir, thank you for schooling my daughter and great to hear your words of wisdom and wonderful to Benny.

I'm happy that you've reconnected with your missing 336, if now in a different caliber. That rifle had to be made for someone in Marlin management or salesman of the year, the wood is certainly nicer than any Marlin rifle I've ever seen.

I simply love the 336 in .35 Remington. It is the first rifle I ever owned and was given to me by my father, she is a 1963 model
IMR 3031 and the 200 grain CoreLokt is a match made in heaven. I had a 336 briefly that shot the load straight from DuPonts load book very well. Used a 2x7 Leupold on that rifle.
Winchesters are too skinny. Henry's are cool too. I love my Marlin's though. Thanks for sharing as always @GUNBLUE490 you are a classic sir!!!

In 2009 I stumbled up on a 1954 edition of the 336 in .35 Remington and purchased it because I was of the same model year and I had long been fascinated with the cartridge and had always liked Marlin Lever actions in general. In 2012 I sold that rifle to one of my best friends who has taken a number of very nice eatin' sized deer with one shot kills being the norm not the exception. In 2014, while The Lovely Bride and I were still living in Maryland I happened upon a 336, also in .35 Remington, that appeared to have never been fired OR even loaded! However, the previous owner had mounted a scope and committed the sin of using the "bulls' eye" as a mounting point for a sling. Based on the like new condition I purchased that rifle (and a Savage 99E in .308 in like new condition) on the spot! We moved back home to our beloved South Carolina in 2019 but it was 2020 before I was able to go hunting with my Marlin (or any other firearm for that matter because I missed hunting season by a matter of days due our move) and have had some success with it. In the meantime, another dear friend had witnessed the effectiveness of the .35 Remington and the 336 on deer and hogs and found one for sale that did not cost more than his house payment and snapped it and several boxes of 200grn JSP up too! As it turned out his Marlin was also a 1954 model and was in excellent condition and has helped keep the freezers at his house full of venison and pork productions (that 200grn round puts the smack down on feral hogs). My 1970s model of 336 in .35 Remington is very nice indeed but I'm considering trying to work out a trade and get my original 336 in .35 Remington back. Assuming my friend likes me enough to consider such a trade.

Man what a commentary I loved it !! I’ve got the 35 Remington in the 141 and the 30 Remington in the model 14 but I sure do love the old Marlins and own several... Something has been lost through the years, I just can’t pinpoint as to why? I used to enjoy these type of stories at gun shows and gun shops, but the stories are almost nonexistent anymore.

I have a 35 WCF Winchester model 1895. Excellent bid game cartridge using a 250 grain bullet. I get 2300 fps with IMR 3031. Only 100fps shy of the famous Whelen. Bought it in 1982 for $300 and no ammunition could be found for it. It’s what got me into reloading.
Fantastic story and rifle. I too have a model 336 in .35 Remington. I got it new in 1974 when I was 15 years old. Though other rifles have come into my possession and serve the purpose they were obtained for, my good ol Marlin .35 is still my favorite deer rifle and sees use each season. I’ve taken countless deer with it. I’m a handloader and bullet caster and in my early years I loaded Hornady and Sierra 200 grain jacketed bullets for optimal hunting level accuracy and loaded Lyman’s gas checked 204 grain cast bullet for fun target and plinking loads but for the last 25 years or so I’ve been using my cast bullets for hunting with great results. I’ve found a load that is highly accurate with the cast bullet and it duplicates factory velocity levels. This is even in my micro groove barrel which is said to not shoot cast bullets well beyond 1600 FPS but that has not been the case with my rifle. It shoots cast very well at full velocity. Recently, I got Lee’s 200 grain .358 mold and casted up some beautiful flat nose bullets. Lubed and sized in my Lyman 450 sizer luber. I’m excited to develop this bullet in a good full speed load as well. Vintage Marlin 336’s are great rifles and the .35 Remington is the greatest match in them and seem to have magical effects on the game. It’s almost like you just can’t miss when the shot is presented. Never lost a deer I’ve shot with it and great satisfaction comes from casting my bullets and using my hand loads to fire in a great old rifle. I’m 62 years old and counting and the Marlin is special.
A quintessential New England deer rifle . I bought mine at Woolco at age 18 in 1980 and used it in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont with great success. Other popular deer guns were Savage 99 in .250 and .300 Sav. Also the ever present Winchester 97 .30-30.

My grandpa gifted me his 336 in 30-30 a couple months ago. It’s got some wear and tear but it’s a beautiful gun. I shot my first deer with that gun.
My grandpa also gave me my first deer rifle. His old 336 30-30 back in 1992. Got my first deer with it in 93. I still have that rifle and whenever I pull it out of the safe I think of all the memories hunting with grandpa.

Bought a Marlin 336 Texan caliber 35 Remington in 1954 when I was 16. Hunted with it until I graduated from college when sold it and bought a Winchester Model 71, 348 caliber.

The Marlin 336's are beautiful rifles. I started looking for a 35 Rem about 25 years ago, and lucked into an older gentleman selling out his meager gun collection. The stocks were well used, but the bore and action were perfect. I meant to refinish the stocks as a Winter project, but after I put on a dark replacement synthetic stock, topped by a 2x8 Silver scope, it shot so well, I left it like that. When I do my part, the 200 grain bullets just stack on top of each other. I also stumbled across some hard cast 260 grain harden lead Keith style bullets that I shoot with a reduced loads, that have put 100's of loads in targets and stumps. The 35 Rem does carry a wallop!

Another great video!! I am 59 now but remember when I got my first 30-30 336 for Christmas back when I was 15 years old! The one thing I remember was the feeling that for the first time, I had a REAL rifle in my hands, especially compared to my bb and pellet rifles I had at the time. I remember the weight of the rifle and most of all I remember how tight the JM Marlin was when I worked the lever and pulled back the hammer and dreamed about all of the great times I was going to have with this rifle and it did not disappoint ..... I loved that rifle from the first time I held it and I still have it all of these years later and will never sell it. Still shoots as smooth and accurate as it did the first time I shot it. I have a lot of great memories with that rifle and it always brings a smile to me just to pick it up and shoulder it.. I have shot a lot of deer with that rifle and a 336 in a 35 Rem. and they are all a piece of art. Love these rifles! Great video and beautiful wood you have on the rifle you have in this video! I have both a 44 and a 35 Remington. The 44 is cool but the 35 Remington is great. I've never appreciated either until recently.
My Mom got one of these in the mid 1970’s in 35 Remington and has taken many deer with it.
That is a beautiful rifle you have there . My first lever was a 336 in 35 Remington , took it to a pawn shop very shortly after I had bought it because my thumb slipped off the slick hammer and had an accidental discharge , fortunately it WAS pointed in a safe direction . That was about 25 years ago now . I have since gotten another 336 in 30-30 , a Western Auto branded and haven't fired it in over 10 years unfortunately .

Bought an 81 Marlin 336 carbine today in 30-30 at a local gunshow. I've wanted one for years. It's such a beautiful firearm. Great machining, great woodworking, great fit and finish, and smooth as glass. Very happy to have found one so nice.
I have owned and used both Marlin and Winchester lever action rifles designed more for heavier game than whitetail deer, I purchased two rifles in the early 1960s. One a Marlin 1895, chambered for the .45-70 govt. cartridge and the second more expensive Winchester mod.71, in .348 Win. Both served me to the extreme, especially in the forested hunting areas of Maine and later the Cascade Mts. of western Washington. The blacktail deer, black bear, and elk were no match for either of these rifles, especially the .348 Win. loaded with the older Winchester "silvertip" 250 gr. soft point bullets, Long gone today. The Marlin 1985 took more than its share of black bear and two Roosevelt Elk on the Olympic Peninsula of Wash. State. Great hunting, great times!
My 336 in 30-30 was bought at K-Mart ha. Build date from 1975, I believe I purchased it in 1977 and was used deer hunting with my dad in Potter County Pa. Awesome video as all of them are... can’t wait for the results of the target practice.

I am super excited to get into my 35 Rem. I have several other 35 cal guns and this just fits with them. Under 100 yards is all I have to shoot and it'll do the job just fine.
A friend of mine had a 336T in 35 Rem. with the straight grip, it was a cool rifle for sure. I have the regular 336C in 35 Rem. and love it.
Thank you for the video on my favorite deer rifle, the Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. My first ever deer rifle was a 1957 336SC .35 Remington. Since then I’ve added a 1952RC waffle top with a Williams peep sight too. I have others, but these two are my favorites. Too bad they’re not appreciated by the larger deer hunting population any more.

That is a very beautiful 336. I think you definitely got lucky with that one and 35 Remington is a great cartridge I hear guys say it is underated. Thanks for sharing 👍

@@GunBlue490 Yes what I meant was people who own it say it performs better than it's ballistics would imply. I had a buddy in Alaska back in the 90s that used it for black bear and moose and he swore by it. He had the 336a 24" with 2/3 mag tube it was a beautiful rifle. I would love to find that configuration and put a Tang sight on it. Thanks 👍
Owned a Marlin 336 Texan in 35 Remington when I was 16 in 1954. I also delivered newspapers on my Schwinn when I was 12.
Folks these days don't know how much of a commitment paper delivery was for a young boy. The papers had to be delivered, no matter what. It was hard work and taught responsibility.
I am originally from the Upper Peninsula of MI and the majority of folks there after 1990 use the 06 or 308 and I love both but can remember how good the 35 Rem 336s were on whitetails in the woods of the MI UP.
