Wow, this hit me! Especially the ending "living idols, dying faiths". I guess it's the "promise" that California bears into itself and I've always watched movies about and read books about. Recently watched a video of a train there in the LA territory, transporting Amazon stuff, that was robbed and all the envelopes left there on the ground. A floor of empty paper and plastic bags, proving we live into weird and wild times.
