  • Professor Elaine Showalter explores modernity, consciousness, gender and time in Virginia Woolf’s ground-breaking work, 'Mrs Dalloway'. The film is shot around the streets of London, as well as at the British Library and at Gordon Square in Bloomsbury where Virginia and her siblings lived in the early 20th century. The film offers rare glimpses into the manuscript draft of the novel.

I just finished the book yesterday and this video blew my mind. There are so many details that go unnoticed when you read the book, but when you stop to analyse it - as this video does - you realize those details were actually quite noticed by your brain and linked to something you already knew but failed to explain. It's brilliant and definitely timeless. I'll be reading plenty more of Woolf.

Also I think the book is still so modern, contemporary to us that many things on the book looks very "normal" to our lives today, I can't imagine how revolutionary it was in 1923!

Wonderful comment on the novel! Particularly precious because it provides its historical, social and artistic context. I particularly aprreciated the explanation of some of the symbols contained in the book which usually are unnoticed. I will definetely use this video in my EFL classes.

London is my home. I love it so much. The archive films were amazing. I was wondering just how much, or if at all, Virginia's style of writing would have been different if she has been formally educated at University especially, as were her brothers.

I recently read it but I can't say I enjoyed it. I did wonder whether Septimus Smith's symptoms were typical of shell shock. I did not feel there was a very wide cross section of British society portrayed in the book.

I really appreciated A Literature of their Own. And this is great and as expected. Thank you for uploading. But what is this contemporary need for distracting music in the background, as if anyone seeking such a video can't manage just to listen to her words, or manage 18 minutes concentration. Very annoying. Just stop it and give us the benefit of her brain and knowledge. The archival footage of the times was very instructive. Interesting on trauma. I think trauma is the result of an intense emotional conflict between what we think/expect is and what (experience confronts us with as) actually is. The mind can't process the gap, the disjunction and flies around in a chaotic dissociated terrified void trying to make the opposing realities fit. The eloquence of Elaine Showalter is impressive.

In one video it is claimed that British people aren't educated in Virginia Wolfe. I studied " To the Lighthouse " for A level fifty odd years ago. Other friends know her work I'm sure . I like it very much , an enjoying Mrs . Dalloway as an audio book now. I also like D. H. Lawrence studied at school also. I think maybe he was influenced by her , or they influenced each other.I
Vanessa Redgrave is perfect to play her. Like E. M. Forsters novels.

With all due respect to The Brits. this is by far one of the worst book reviews. I can not believe it has been posted. Thanks to the Indian professors & some Europeans posting essential summaries. Author, Context, History, Plot Summary, Writing Style are the basics in a review summary.
