- Professor Elaine Showalter explores modernity, consciousness, gender and time in Virginia Woolf’s ground-breaking work, 'Mrs Dalloway'. The film is shot around the streets of London, as well as at the British Library and at Gordon Square in Bloomsbury where Virginia and her siblings lived in the early 20th century. The film offers rare glimpses into the manuscript draft of the novel.

I just finished the book yesterday and this video blew my mind. There are so many details that go unnoticed when you read the book, but when you stop to analyse it - as this video does - you realize those details were actually quite noticed by your brain and linked to something you already knew but failed to explain. It's brilliant and definitely timeless. I'll be reading plenty more of Woolf.
Nice choice of words 💬
Also I think the book is still so modern, contemporary to us that many things on the book looks very "normal" to our lives today, I can't imagine how revolutionary it was in 1923!
i just finished reading the book ...it's has a magic effect on me ...
thank you from ALGERIA
i may sound a bit weird, but seeing an Algerian person in the comments really makes me want to reply haha. Virginia Woolf is really an amazing writer
This was unbelievably informative. Thank you so much for posting. I have noticed new thins things that I didn't before when I read this book for the first time!
Excellent! It's rare to find such insightful analysis for free
Wonderful comment on the novel! Particularly precious because it provides its historical, social and artistic context. I particularly aprreciated the explanation of some of the symbols contained in the book which usually are unnoticed. I will definetely use this video in my EFL classes.
Browsing CZcams for something useful for my students confined by the coronavirus as we are about to begin reading Mrs D. Thanks for this very good overview: brief but packed with insight and themes to follow up
This was absolutely beautiful, I enjoyed every minute watching this 🥹🙏
Beautiful explanation that has added great depth to the understanding of this novel. Thanks!
I think this is a very insightful review, stressing on the factors that are not conventionally discussed. This review does not have the tendency of spoon feeding and is open to interpretation.
this is so beautiful I'm crying
Yeah, what is deal with the weird background music in this video?
IKR first thing I noticed 🤯
Such a shame. Soothe your soul with Max Richters Ms D instead
So amazing. Very brilliant. Thanks.
Very informative. Thanks much.
London is my home. I love it so much. The archive films were amazing. I was wondering just how much, or if at all, Virginia's style of writing would have been different if she has been formally educated at University especially, as were her brothers.
get rid of the distracting music
It's very interesting but the music is really too loud and noisy. What a pity.
Splendid video!
Annoying background noises interfere with Showalter's voice.
Wonderful. Thank you.
Thank you for this wonderful explanation!
Wow really wow I cannot find words that suffice describing this deep_dive analyzing video. Many thanks for this fabulous work that made me fall in love with literary analysis in general.
very helpful to comprehend Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway
I recently read it but I can't say I enjoyed it. I did wonder whether Septimus Smith's symptoms were typical of shell shock. I did not feel there was a very wide cross section of British society portrayed in the book.
Great film. Mrs Dalloway is, like many of her other works, greater than the sum of its parts.
I found out this video with the help of my teacher and the explanations are pretty helpful 😊
superb !!!
I have just started reading it...
very nice
Ach! Whilst I was enjoying the book discussion etc and found it very helpful to my understanding and appreciation of the book, the music is painful. It's like the musical representation of a building migraine! At times I found it overwhelming and couldn't hear the woman speak.
Maybe the music here represented that one character in the novel who is crazy.
Excellent.
I really appreciated A Literature of their Own. And this is great and as expected. Thank you for uploading. But what is this contemporary need for distracting music in the background, as if anyone seeking such a video can't manage just to listen to her words, or manage 18 minutes concentration. Very annoying. Just stop it and give us the benefit of her brain and knowledge. The archival footage of the times was very instructive. Interesting on trauma. I think trauma is the result of an intense emotional conflict between what we think/expect is and what (experience confronts us with as) actually is. The mind can't process the gap, the disjunction and flies around in a chaotic dissociated terrified void trying to make the opposing realities fit. The eloquence of Elaine Showalter is impressive.
In one video it is claimed that British people aren't educated in Virginia Wolfe. I studied " To the Lighthouse " for A level fifty odd years ago. Other friends know her work I'm sure . I like it very much , an enjoying Mrs . Dalloway as an audio book now. I also like D. H. Lawrence studied at school also. I think maybe he was influenced by her , or they influenced each other.I
Vanessa Redgrave is perfect to play her. Like E. M. Forsters novels.
Kaytey
Thank u
Not a fan of the soundtrack to this video. Could not finish due to weird soundtrack.
EXCELENTE!!!
well said.
I loved this commentary but why do we need the annoying background music?
This was quite interesting and informative. How much better it might have been with period music rather than the dreary, wholly inappropriate minimalist deedle-deedle that was chosen instead.
Thank you. I dig the analysis but the background is a no. but ya, thanks.

The music is disturbing, what a shame...
yes
The music is awesome. It really puts one in situation. There's a Death Note vibe in it
@@holydiver6570FOR REAL AHAHAH
In four days I will have an essay exam on it but i'm still confused! Also the background music is creepy
Chakib Iglesias how did it go ? !
Good and pertinent analysis. Shame about the stupid, annoying and obtrusive "muzac" throughout ...
The background music is very annoying and distracting. Horrible choice. I couldn't hear the woman speak.
Hard disagree
Please make in Urdu
Had to read this in school and hated it. Granted I am also 17.
yes, many of these awesome commentaries are ruined by annoyingly inane background 'music'. please please remove the stupid soundtrack
This is the worst book review
Bruh, I actually didn't want to watch the video. But, once she started talking about Big Ben, and other literary things, well, do homework and don't get out, it's a bit embarrassing, but..
I went to the kitchen and ate a sandwich
With all due respect to The Brits. this is by far one of the worst book reviews. I can not believe it has been posted. Thanks to the Indian professors & some Europeans posting essential summaries. Author, Context, History, Plot Summary, Writing Style are the basics in a review summary.
This is an excellent video but the background music drove me crazy and drowned out the commentary throughout.
She’s not British
Satrap 🉐
It's an analysis, not a review.
