EPS Midlength Surfboard Glassed with Carbon Fiber

  • I've been experimenting with this idea of removing a stringer and replacing it with carbon fiber reinforced deck and rails. The EPS blank serves as a lighter more buoyant core. The carbon layer in theory serves as a stronger stringer and deck lam which will allow it to be lighter and last longer.
And then the midlength design only makes sense, but I need to try it first. The theory is longer, more buoyant boards make it easier to catch and surf waves.

Try doing a thin squeegee coat first. Let it just get tacky then lay your carbon down. Way easier to get the carbon to go where you want. You have to nail the placement of the carbon the first time is the only thing. Otherwise the tow get all messed up if you have to pull it up and reset. You will use way less resin too. And carbon fiber is at its highest strength at lower resin contents. It’s very easy to oversaturate carbon. I’ve make lots of carbon boards here in Hawaii. And I build with Tiger canoe. Lots of carbon fiber work. Good luck!

Great board, midlength are dope. Not for shredders, but to surf with class.
    Silver Surfer's board...😁
    I dream of a silver midlength 😄

Vaccuming carbon makes your board 10x more strong because you remove all air. Making the whole construction waaaaay stronger. Also the leftover resin gets 'eaten' by the cloth under the piel ply. So the board is also lighter because there is not to much resin on the board.
Once you go vacuüm bagging you never look back.

Nice work. I am surprised that the green tint covered the black so well, and i am surprised that you had to hand cut the outline for a cnc cut shape. Normaly the machine does that.

Ha ya I leave the digital file open for interpretation so I can make a round tail or swallow. But the green was a little transparent. I decided to start spraying rather than the resin tint.

Great work! You put so many epoxy layers on top, but I think it’s ok if we remember how much the customer weighs :)

2 layers of fabric, fill coat, and hot coat is pretty standard for epoxy from what I’m aware. I just did it in a few extra steps for strategic reasons.

great work, can you share the formula for measurement for fins placement

To be honest I have a standard shortboard template and longboard template and I just kind of eyeball the placement if it's somewhere between. But I can share if you want

Hey hey, nice vid showing the whole process. Just a little question. What do you use to cut your fiberglass? Looks easier than cutting with siccors...

How do you get that 2 level route for the track box? Also what kind of powered scissors are you using?thanks!

Sorry for the late reply. Not sure what you mean by level 2 route? If you mean the routing bit, it's a future fin bit. The scissors are just standard electric I got off amazon. Hope that helps!
