  • Rebecca Goeckeritz believes there are no barriers. At 15 months old, she was involved in an auto pedestrian accident, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. Although the event changed her life, she learned to view challenges as opportunities for growth.

Rebecca, I remember playing violin together in the same studio. I've never known your full story until now. What an inspiration you are to me and so many others! Way to take on the world!

this brings tears of joy to my eyes. i'm at the stage of my illness where i need a wheelchair part time. friends and family won't discuss this with me. i need positive roll models like you rebecca. i see that the key to handling this next step in my life is focusing all that i am able to do. if nothing else, needing a wheelchair has given me more love and empathy for others.

    Rebecca--
I have admired you for a very long time.
As a friend of your parents, I have seen how you pull together as a family.
Thanks for helping us all to overcome self pity.
    Warm regards,
    Richard Warner

I don't mind at all. I knew I was in a wheelchair physically from a very young age, but I didn't "know" what being in a wheelchair meant socially until I was going into 7th grade. When I discovered I was in a wheelchair, at first I was shocked, but I am a prayerful person & I turned to prayer to help me think through this challenge. As I prayed one day I realized that I possessed a happiness that came from within, and that happiness attracted people to me. It was a time of discovery for me.

I just saw your questions, and you have asked gr8 questions! I am paralyzed from T-8, which means feeling for me stops around my bellie button. It is gradual so it is hard to know exactly where there is no feeling. To understand how it feels, imagine somebody sews a someone else's limb to your hips and didn't attach any nerves. You carry around with you that limb, and you can "feel" its' presence, but not really feel it. That's the best I can do! Thanks for making me think about it!

Very interesting. I didn't really come to terms with my use of a wheelchair until I was in college. Before that I was ashamed of it and of the lower half of my body.
I see you mentioned that you are a T-8. I'm T6-8 incomplete. Are you incomplete, too?
    Anyway, great video.
