"Once Upon a Time in the West" it is a 1968 film directed by Sergio Leone. It's an Italian western produced by Paramount Pictures and starring Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Charles Bronson. The screenplay was written by Leone and Sergio Donati, from a story devised by Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento.
The original version of the film was 165 minutes long when was released on December 21, 1968. This version was screened in European cinemas, and was a box office success. For the US release May 28, 1969, "Once Upon a Time in the West" was cut by Paramount up to a duration of 145 minutes, receiving a warm critical mostly negative and failing financially. The film is now considered among the best ever made. In 2009 the film was included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant.
The music was written by Ennio Morricone under the direction of the director before filming began. As in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", the haunting music contributes to the size of the film and is considered one of the greatest compositions of Morricone.
The film features leitmotivs that relate to each of the main characters (each with their own theme music), as well as the spirit of the American West. Particularly interesting is the voice without words of Italian singer Edda Dell'Orso during the musical theme of Jill.
Leone wanted to have music available and played during the shoot and made to Morricone to compose the soundtrack before shooting and reproduced music in the background for the actors on the set. The soundtrack of the film was published in 1972. In the world were sold about 10 million copies of the album. A remastered and expanded to 27 tracks was published in Italy in November 2005 by GDM.

Once Upon a Time In the West is just the best soundtrack ever. I used to hold a cassette player to the TV and record the music to listen back to in my bed at night.

Much better than the movie in my opinion. I heard the music long before I watched the movie, and to me the music is way bigger and better, though the movie is ok. But if you love this music don't watch the movie, my two cents..

I remember my parents introducing the film to my older sisters. I was not old enough to watch it at the time, so had to go to bed and just listen to the incredible score from upstairs! I still remember that vividly now.
My favourite film and have watched it many times since, including at the London BFI cinema on the southbank. What an epic.
And I am back here just listening the score again!

I remember seeing seeing this movie as a 7 year old ...oh my God ...it stayed with me for weeks .. I could barely handle the tension especial at the end... at 7 no movie is predictable and so I did not know if Bronson or Fonda would prevail. God it was magical.

If I only had an hour left to live, this is the music I'd prefer to go out listening to. Morricone for Leone music is unparalleled. Watching this film is emotional enough, but with Ennio's music, just not fair. Dry eyes solved.

Got hooked on ennio morricone when I saw the good bad in the ugly and have followed all of his Westerns. The big gun down has been missed by many people, great score there and he has Lee Van Cleef in a good role.
the Untouchables and Once Upon a Time in America was my favourite when I was a kid but the Dollars Trilogy and Once Upon a Time in the West are my favourites

I saw this movie for first time in late 70's on late night T.V. I was 12 or 13 and I remember thinking how great the music was.

I reckon I'll watch this exception more than all the others put together . The music pushes it over the edge .
Where is the single video of the song at 33:00? The part where Frank has Jill on the bed and says "yeah I bet you'd do just about anything to save your pretty little hide". Almost all songs from the album are broken out into single videos except this one. It is one of my favorites. This entire soundtrack is a masterpiece. I have never tired of listening to it over and over my entire life. It is absolute perfection. No one compares to Ennio Morricone! The breadth of his work is truly a gift from God. May he rest in peace.
