What a treat to listen to some full grown horses. This tractor seems to be in like new condition for what I see. Great old machine, you're blessed in owning such a beauty from the past.
I spent almost 46 years as a dozer driver and many hours on a 9G/H/L/N/R/T.. just to say you are wrong about the "G"& "H" series being the same with combined brakes/clutch,i was operating the first D9H in the UK for Miller mining.around 1975 ,the H had the clutch/brakes combined on the slewing levers...(the 9G did not)... the same as the D8K..which i also operated around 1979/80 for Shand mining...and yes, they were heavy for turning a full circle, especially on soft ground.....
These old D9's are pretty good old machine. I ran one just like this one every day for 2 years peeling blast rock in a 90 foot cut. I later got a D8N high track with air. Much nicer and a lot easier on my back.
The D9G is responsible for many of the interstate HWY's in the USA but more over it is also responsible for opening up many of the worlds toughest roads. We should all thank Cat and the D9G for opening up our world.
Great score, having learned on an old cable lift D8 with power shift and box cab,, as well as an old straight drive D7 that only steered right unless pushing a load, you really appreciate a hydraulic . blade after those., thanks for posting a beautiful find
I had not ever yet heard of a 9 . Of course D8 is the ubiquitous big dozer. Known everywhere by everybody. This machine really is a magnificent thing. As others note it's in great condition. Thanks for bringing it to us couch jockeys.
Our neighbor the Mulinex family had a big bladed cable 9 with a cage on it in Eastern KS when I was a kid 40 years ago. I was fascinated by it. It still sits south of Scranton KS on a farm
2 9s hooked together is called a Quad 9. They had a swivel pin in the middle. This particular dozer I don't think was "set-up" for pushing scrapers, it has a cable front unit on it and a cable rear with a hitch pin. I believe it was probably set up as a cat and can combo in its early life. May have pushed scrapers though. Many guys take the cable dozer blades from these old cats and modify them into a c-dozer (cushion dozer) for pushing scrapers.
Hi just subscribed to your channel. I haul machinerey for a living but I am a generation or 2 away from this kind of equipment. There dosen't really seem to be much in common with the new stuff. You are providing a great educational resource for some of us young fellas. thanks
The blade lift is cable operated, rather than hydraulics. Early D9's were all like that, but most D9G's were hydraulic. Without the hydraulics, the blade is dependent on it's own weight to cut into the ground. With hydraulics, you can press down harder with it.
I agree. This one look like it was made after 1962. The old ones I operated had a steering clutch and brake for each track, and a clutch to engage the drive. I operated a newer little D-4 later that had the single lever control and foot throttle-down. It was okay, but nothing like the old stuff. Seems like the old iron was heavier and could push better.
The ol h and g series had the manual brakes seperate from the hand clutches for turning. The K series linked the brakes to the hand clutches. When you pulled the k series hand clutches they clutched the one side. Then when you pulled it all the way it would lock that one brake making all the power to the other side which made it turn. The only problem with the D9G and >H series was that they weighed so much especially if you had a full U blade up front. The G series I ran had a huge blade.
I was thinking about this video. The spinning part in the winch drum, does that engage to the winch by a clutch, and reel it in when it's engaged? Also, how does the cable lift operate? Is that driven from a PTO/clutch type drive, or a hydraulic motor that controls the cable? And how does it hold the blade in the up position? By a line brake/drag?
I love the ol flat tracks! I believe it is a D9G. The proof would be in the serial number. I was told that they made a few D9 that hooked together as a double tractor. I just tried to call the guy that told me about them and he no longer has that number. I beileve it is an ol push cat for scrapers. Look at the blade short and narrow. Also notice the extra metal in the center of the facing of the blade. Also the blade attaches to the center of the undercarriage. It has no push arms or trinions. .
@mrdeisel335 This dozer has a 3 speed power-shift transmission. It is basically an automatic with no clutch for the operator to engage or disengage. All you have to do is move the shifter to the desired speed and the machine moves.
The tracks are flat because the grousers are well worn, the blade is a spring loaded pushing one designed for pushing scrapers,it also has a pushing block on the back for another dozer to button up to it to help,..maybe been pushing 657/651s...the extra metal is to protect the skin on the blade, they wear thro' very quickly when pushing all the time, most dozers have a full size muck blade on for pushing, just as quick/easy to button up with one of these with experience...
correction,the bigest selling tractor of all time.allso,a case backhoe 580,great hoe,used a 4 speed standard srans,with a tourke converter.,and was a great combo.
That is a good loking old tractor sounds great and looks solid. The only thing that was unpleasant was the track squeal when working in dry material for long periods. EAR MUFFS PLEASE. That applied to all cats in them days.
One of the first dozers I learnt on pushing scrapers, was old back then in late 80s, was fine till the boss borrowed it and dumped in mud and drowned the engine.

Shows that when a machine is well built and maintained with a good operator, it will last for decades. Iron that built America and the world.

They are certainly a great scraper Cat and aren't that bad on fuel. A powershift D8K will use as much fuel.

Fuck Caterpillar.. they cost me my job supplying on the road diesel parts...they can burn
A joy to watch brings back memory's The best Dozer To Ever Leave Illinois -:),
I went to the grade school right across from the cat plant in mossville IL off 29
The epitome of the word tough, & love the sound of that diesel!

What a power house. Thanks for posting.

It really runs smooth!
Excellent shape and condition for its age.
Best D9 of that age I seen.
Our neighbor the Mulinex family had a big bladed cable 9 with a cage on it in Eastern KS when I was a kid 40 years ago. I was fascinated by it. It still sits south of Scranton KS on a farm
thats my favorite dozer.would love to run one of those D9s someday.ran all the others
I've never saw a modern70s and 80s D9G with a cable lift. I figured this to be older.
glad i had head phones on for that one sounded awesome
The best ,Cats like this one built roads and highways in the americas from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego ...
Lovely machine ..drove one of these in 1969 ..very reliable ..brings back great old memories

I have operated older D9 G's like this one.. There were no Rop's roll over cages for protection back in those days.

I used to operate the old D9G, both with a push dozer and a gravel u-dozer..
I have a really nice D9G with brand new Cat undercarriage. This must be a very early one with the vertical air cleaners.
The blade lift is cable operated, rather than hydraulics. Early D9's were all like that, but most D9G's were hydraulic. Without the hydraulics, the blade is dependent on it's own weight to cut into the ground. With hydraulics, you can press down harder with it.
love the sound they make
I think that "mint" has been in your pocket too long, and is covered in fuzz. Cool? Yes. Mint... ummmm, no.

my honest opinion, Caterpillar has not produced a finer machine than the 9G. Best scraper pusher made, with the solid tourque for quick load times.
Mint Condition with finals being less than 50%?

Great isn't it? I'd love to have a go driving something like that. Must be incredible to feel all that power available.
Fantastic old machine!!
Nothing like the sound of a turbo! (Or 2)

DieselPowerTV hi jacaaax×'the j m
Only 9 I ever loved running was the T, favorite was the D10 and D8H. Ran a D9H with sloapboard, never did like the 9 H, call me spoiled!!!
Still impressive, no nada matter what!!
@DieselPowerTV did this beast get a new paint job or is that original paint
Geez, how good are the tracks on this 9.
I ran a 580 Extend-A-Hoe for 5 years with 5 stick Hoe Controls. LOVED the machine !!!
Nice Kitty!
It seems to crawl about the premises as if it were some kind of clinking clanking mechanical monster,
almost unstoppable.
I ran a brand new d6 for a few minutes. It was the most fun i have ever had.
This baby could go back to work pushing scrapers all day long. BUT---better get your check book out for the fuel!!
Wow, lots of haters. Cool old machine. Thanks for posting it.
this is great.....love this old thing
was that a inside frame cable dozer?....bar on back pushcat?
Some of the muscle that made this country great!
when i drove for a frac crew, a dozer just like that would pull our trucks out of muddy locations.grt machine
How do you get those things to move- is there a clutch? Or is there an engager that activates when the throttle is moved?
love that turbo whine
Best turbo noise :o)
i love the cat d9 all the d series good old bread and butter machines
That is fucking tank ......

videos of the other dozer at the end?
is that original mint mud piled in tracks?
I'll bet that 9 has helped build a lot of interstate
@DieselPowerTV I didnt know that automatics and cable blades were ever together.
What the purpose of the bucket over the exhaust?
actually, there are several types of grousers or " shoes " that are used on cat tractors. those roller frames could use a cleanin.
Why was there a bucket on the exhaust? Keep crap out or to add back pressure?
Trying to look through that 9 to get a look at the (633C ?)
is that the original paintwork?
What year was it built in?
How big of a tree will this monster push over??
beautiful machine
what is the spinning apparatus at the back, just behind the fuel tank? torque converter? clutch? what a beast of a mover
+Ben Ehlert Cable Control Unit, or CCU.
i like the sound of tht Cat D9g
This one is an antique I think Gary !
Que maravilla de maquina !
@jeremylee99100 I'm not sure if has the original paint or not. It was bought as is.
How much did that cost to buy? Operate daily?
If they didn't have to replace parts and just got it running then why in the hell was it just sitting out in that field like that?
That is a good loking old tractor sounds great and looks solid. The only thing that was unpleasant was the track squeal when working in dry material for long periods. EAR MUFFS PLEASE. That applied to all cats in them days.
Nice machine! By the way, are you going to fix my lawn??
This thing makes 385hp at the flywheel, and over 1200 ft-lbs of torque. For a long time this was the most powerful bulldozer in production.
Not quite. The Euclid TC-12 held that record from 1955 until 1970 when the Allis-Chalmers HD-41 was introduced.
One of the first dozers I learnt on pushing scrapers, was old back then in late 80s, was fine till the boss borrowed it and dumped in mud and drowned the engine.
No doubt about it.........mint!
I would like to know how to run it ,just like a Steam Locomotive and a Diesel Loco
good but not quite mint...sprocket and pins, proly rollers, and carriers, and idler pulley also. but looks good
Open up the CAT full throttle and let's hear that turbo whistle and purr

Amazing that this very popular machine gave no protection whatsoever to the operator!
how much does it weigh
It's a D9G with a cable unit. Most D9G's are all hydraulic.
Bellissimi mezzi.
we,,re this beauty now!
I wished I had that when I was making right of way for a gas line I could of had it done in 2 days
nice old tractor
is she up for sale?
When you want to pull the hinges off hell you go get a D9
It still works and that's good
Why do modern CATs have triangle shaped tracks instead of straight ones like this old beauty?
the 580 case was the first real backhoe,standrad trans,tourqe converter,great combo.in farm tractors,the 4020 used an auto trans,and dry clutch,great combo,in that great tractor.my father was union local 825 hwys,and dams mostly,in the north east.cat great too.
