- The 'Bharat Ratna' or the 'Jewel of India' is the Republic of India's highest civilian award. The recommendations for an award of the "Bharat Ratna" are made by the Prime Minister of India to the President of India; a maximum of three awards may be made in a given year.The holders of the Bharat Ratna rank 7th in the Indian order of precedence.
President Pranab Mukherjee will confer cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and eminent scientist Prof C N R Rao with the highest civilian honour on February 4 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.Tendulkar is the first sportsman and the youngest recipient of the the Bharat Ratna.
Tendulkar (40) and Rao (89), both of whom are recipients of Padma Vibhushan--the country's second highest civilian honour, join the list of 41 eminent personalities to get the award given in recognition of exceptional service of the highest order.

Tremendous respect for Legend of Indian Science Prof CNR Rao. For his long innings of 60yrs and continuing in solid state chemistry and nanomaterials. India is grateful for having a visionary and pioneer in the field of science.
Tendulkar also feeling humble in front of Dr CNR Rao. His contributions include 1500 research papers. This is next to impossible for any a academician . Greatest scientist in india since Dr CV Raman
I am happy as a Ph.D. research scholar that "Prof. Rao" is given Bharat Ratna. It is seldom that we give importance to scientific researchers unless and until they go abroad get educated there and then only we acknowledge them unfortunately (that was the case with Legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan). Only and only cricketers and movie stars names we know but hardly people know anything about "scientific achievers". People know how many centuries a cricketer has made or how many movies a film star has acted but hardly people know what was the research done by Prof. Rao/ Venkat Raman Rama Krishnan/ Manjul Bhargava / J.C.Bose,etc...
Prof. Rao obtained Ph.D. from Purdue University and his major field of work is in "Solid state chemistry" and "Material Science". People working on photo-voltaic cell efficiency know how important is material science which if improved can change drastically the whole power industry to completely renewable based.
Unless and until we give importance to scientific research country "CANNOT DEVELOP"
Finally I want to say that it is my humble request for youngsters to take up a career in scientific research (I know there are a lot of odds there also but where are they not) and become great academicians/researchers and develop India to its heights.

I am one of the greatest fan of sachin tendular.....I think it should be give to dhayanchand (hockey player).....Because as we all know he was legendry and well known hockey player. This is shameful for all of us. Sachin sir as a cricketer atleast u should come up and say that plz plz honour this award to (dhayan chand). Here i don't want to hurt any feelings. I love sachin. But as a countrymen i will speak as a countrymen. Sorry guy's if i hurt any one....But it is really shame ......
