  • Let's face it, writing research papers is rarely something a student looks forward to, but the process doesn't have to be painful. Today I'm breaking down the steps my students are following for writing research papers that make it easier and less overwhelming. I'll also share free templates I've created and one of my favorite FREE online resources to help with MLA paper formatting and citing. This video is a part of the Homeschool Show and Tell Series hosted by Abby from Rooted in Rest and Jessica from the Waldock Way.

    Thank you so much for this! It’s been so long since I’ve done a research paper (my background in HS and college was similar to yours having to use both methods). I have an 8th grader and Junior so this video couldn’t have come at a better time. New sub!

    That was such a great tip on notetaking quotations. My children are on the younger side but I will definitely keep that in mind when they start getting into more advanced writing.😀

    This is so helpful! All of your content is so helpful to me as a mom with kids just a few years younger than yours. I have saved a few of your videos like this to remind myself of excellent and effective ways to educate my children when they get to high school. Thank you for such an in depth explanation on a truly daunting topic. ❤

    I really appreciate this video on putting together a simple research paper. It is very straightforward.
    (I didn't quite understand the fuses notes thing-)
    I have referred to it twice already and will again.
    Thank you💙

      Fused notes is something IEW teaches in their writing program. Basically if you are looking up topic info from several sources, it is a way to combine that information together to then write your paragraphs from. My kids take separate notes from each source then merge it together into the fused outline before writing

      The Purdue OWL is how I survived college (many, many, many years ago). I lost track of how many papers I had to write. So glad it continues to be available for my kids to use now. With my oldest taking a college composition course next year, it will be her best friend

    I loved writing research papers! 😂 I realize I’m an odd minority.

      (Me, too!)
      I have had difficulty explaining to our girls how to do it, though.🙄🤪

    This was so very helpful, thank you! I'm planning on incorporating research papers for my 9th grader next year too using Guest Hollow. I wondered, would you mind sharing those templates? I really like the way you broke it down. I have also been using IEW, but not as consistently as I probably should but I do like the way they teach writing.

    Did you stop using IEW?

    • @mypracticallyimperfectlife
      @mypracticallyimperfectlife  Před rokem

      We still use it. Each of my kids are using one of the IEW theme writing programs this year. My daughter is using the Advanced US History program and my son is doing Following Narnia Volume 2. They started out in middle school with the full year “Structure and Style” IEW courses, which I highly recommend if your students are new to IEW as it introduces their method of teaching writing.

      @iamme1919 Před rokem +1

      @@mypracticallyimperfectlife Ok. I wasn't sure if I would do the theme-based or Structure and Style. But I will take your advice and start with Structure and Style since we are new to the program. Thanks!
