This was a really great fun movie. Didn't even know they were making movies like this during the Soviet years.
The third night was creepy as hell, and made sense what Viy is!
A very good movie with good play. Remarkable that this subject was possible in those days.
I love this film and own the dvd, but good to have it here too. It's definitely one to tell people about, who you figure will appreciate it--unique, and lots of fun! ;)

You're welcome 😊
Thanks for adding this one to the library. One of my favorites More of a folk fantasy like Jack the Giant Killer than ure Gothic but still fits the mood of your site. My Great uncles had a circus during the thirties and working in other circuses all their lives . They generally ran the side show acts. Heritage Brothers Circus. It mainly focused on wild animal acts . I'm even named after the Camel Tom in the show. Largest Camel in Captivity he was billed. Circuses were expensive to run and the owners often ran into insurmountable debt in leasing trains wagons and equipment. Animals were expensive as well.
That's so interesting! Camel Tom wasn't a mascot for a cigarette brand, was he?
No not that one. My wife's wedding ring contains stones from the snake ladies ring though. How about some Circus horror films. There are a couple of good ones.
This is a great movie! Thanks again!
Never heard of this, thank you so much for uploading it.❤
My pleasure!
Never heard of it before. It’s an interesting film. Thanks for sharing.
It reminds me a bit of fiddler on the roof in setting and Russian tv show the life of a mistress in being in Russian and takes place in the past.
Its Mykola Hohol the author of this film he was born in Poltava into a well known Zaporozhian Cossack family its ancestors took part in Bohdan Kmelnetsky uprising and in the battle of Vienna 1683 . Most of his literature came from his native Ukraine.
Interesting! Thank you!
Gogol, Hohol, Gogol, Hohol, Gogol, Hohol...
Gogol, like Bulgakov, despised Ukrainian nationalists, and with good reason. Both of them wrote in Russian, mind you.
Thank you for posting this! I'd never heard of it, but it's very good

Spooky!
What a fantastic movie, I Love It! Thank you so very much :)

The film "Viy" is based on a Ukrainian folk legend recorded by the Ukrainian Gogol. The film takes place in Ukraine. The main character of the plot studies at the Kyiv Seminary. All the characters in the story are Ukrainians. They are dressed in traditional Ukrainian folk costumes and sing Ukrainian songs. The supporting actors - Mykola Yakovchenko, Dmytro Kapka, Stepan Shkurat - are Ukrainians. This is a Ukrainian story told in a Soviet film.
Thank you for the information. The video says Russia so I went by that, but I'm glad to know the truth.
Sorry, this has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the present war.
From Spain: Gogol nowadays, in fascist Maidan's Ukraine would be targeted by Ukranian ultranationalists regime thugs like Azov, Right Sector and so on for the mere fact that Gogol mother language was Russian. All you describe by Gogol was written in Russian. I do not know what Ukranians have done during their independence from the Russian Empire and then the CCCP more than ally with nazis and kill Jews, Pole people or Russians and be the cannon fodder of NATO against Donbass / Crimean people, to be honest. This is the Ukranian "story" we all know now apart from the propaganda we undergo here in the "free" West lately.🤮
It is incredible that in the sXXI people are targeted by the mere fact they speak in another language (in this case Russian speaking Ukranians in Ukraine) and then war comes, sad to say
Since Ukraine as a state is technically a Soviet invention, at least within the time frame of the film and the time of it's creation by Gogol it would be considered as part of the Russian Empire. So it's not wrong to say it's a Russian tales.
A Soviet film drawing on Ukrainian traditional folklore? Who'd have thought? Lol.
Ukrainian born, former Soviet leader Krushchev, wearing traditional (vyshyvanka) Ukrainian shirts, wow. Ukrainian born Trotsky, leader of the Red army, wow. Yevgenia Bosch, Ukrainian Bolshevik Revolutionary, sometimes considered the first female leader of a national government, and first prime minister of Ukraine, wow.
The end of this movie is the beginning of the other!
First! 12 minutes in, and the subs ate excellent.

Very glad to finally see this!
Espectacular ya la había visto pero no la podia encontrar para verla de nuevo gracias
There's a weird detail in Gogol's story which is not in the film. The infernal creatures are evidently so intent on their harassment of our seminarian that they delay too long, until sunrise, and when they try to escape out the windows they are frozen there, petrified in mid-flight. The church is then abandoned by the good Orthodox Christian locals, doubtless very sensibly. The story is in Gogol's second collection, "Mirgorod" (1835). Although Gogol always claimed that his two early collections, this and "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka", were just old Ukrainian tales, the creature Viy is not today known from any other source. Many English translations of "Mirgorod" are available, all of them pretty decent.
Interesting! Maybe that ending didn't work in the film. Mirgorod is the only thing in Black Sunday that reminds me of Viy!
I was lucky enough to get the DVD of this a few years back… It was the first time I’d seen it and it was like watching films for the first time.

Well said!
For many years in the former ussr,
Gogol's published works had "VIY" removed.
Really? Why?
@@themysteriousdomainmoviepalace
Because it's about the supernatural which's nonsense for the powers that be of the time.
I got hold of a copy in English but ursus-printed & no VIY in it.
I read it later in French in film director Roger Vadim's anthology "Histories de Vampires"
collected from different authors.
❤
In fact, "The Mask of Satan'' with Barbara Steele, is loosely based on this Gogol tale.
Go look at Night of the wolf by Nox Arcana. Now I see where they got their inspiration.
I think I have seen that. its very cool. Thank you!

This is the movie w the subtitles that I had mentioned in a comment wks ago. I just can't get into subtitles :(
I had to figure out how to add the subtitles. I don'tknow how to get around them in foreign films withour dubbing which some people don't like. I like dubbing if its well done.

This film is actually set in Ukraine made during the USSR occupation. He calls himself a Cossack (a Ukrainian). The *best* part is when he draws a magickal circle. (not correctly) and it works! Just like the Ukrainian "Easter" eggs, the church could never take the Pagan out, but only add in their own.
*Pam* {Tom's wife}
What occupation of the USSR? You write nonsense! Gogol's story "Viy" was published in 1835!
I wonder what he has been drinking those three days

How long is she going to explain the film? Over 6 minutes of babbling. Life's too short to sit here listening to this crazy lady

8 minutes. Just skip it.
Fast forward, just don't fall on your head please.
The first version of the film was longer and very interesting, it is a pity that half of the footage was cut at the request of the Christian reaction. The second director Ptushko ruined this film.
Interesting...
